if a vehicle has been sitting long its allways a good idea to drain the fuel flush the fuellines and put a BIG fuelfilter it the line , its probably a good idea to put a rebuild carb on the motor (the lack of speed and the temp climbing would make me guess its running lean , might allso have a vacuumleak somewhere wish could explain the trans shifting slow seen quite a few roadtrips on youtube and the number one problem is bad fuel and carb problems followed by electrical problems

I use to have the same hood flap issue with the Bounder my family had. Always had to make sure those locks were tight. Good luck with the carb. The 454 we had ran really good except for when the HEI distributer took a crap on us. Good luck with it.

Just give the engine a general tune-up. Check timing - late timing can cause engine overheating at high speeds and difficulty in starting the engine (experienced that with my 454 Olds back in the early 70s). Late ignition timing can also damage the starter and flywheel. Check for vacuum leaks - a lean air/fuel mixture due to a vacuum leak can cause overheating issues. There's a vacuum line from the transmission to the engine that controls transmission shifting as the engine load varies. Once that's done, you can make many more skiing trips with that mobile motel.

The little rv diesel heaters work great to get it nice and warm without having to mess around with the kerosene heaters, I paid like $150 for a "8" kw unit and use it to heat a small garage, works great! Budget rv'ing is definitely a vibe.

Congratulations guys, sounds like it was a fun trip. A few things that might help you: Transmission probably needs a vacuum modulator, relatively inexpensive part. It's fairly inexpensive and simple bolt on replacement part. You don't have to drop the pan Your steps were most likely opening due to a worn door switch. It's always a good idea to spray the pivot points on them with wd40 or pb blaster each time you take her on a trip. Your carb is probably due for a rebuild, better yet if you have the funds you might want to consider getting a Holly 750 for it. That will help eliminate a lot of issues that the original quadrajet is giving you. I'm guessing you have the Chevy 454 in it? Also, always a good idea to carry bungee straps with you, they're quite helpful when body parts don't cooperate, ie your hood. I'm glad that didn't cause you guys an accident. Three different motorhomes in my past, I found they were a lot of fun but very expensive. You were wise to get an old one, thus avoiding a lot of wasted money on payments. Finally, we used to take time before each trip and ask and pray that Jesus would guide and protect us each trip. He is faithful, he protected us. I just wish I had remembered to lower the tv antenna on a few occasions, lol Thanks for your videos 👍, good stuff!! Happy motoring guys!!

Dude!!! I KNEW you'd have a great time in this old girl!! You GOTTA fix the wipers, that's a necessity! Have you checked those vacuum lines for leaks?? Clean the HECK out of that carb, drop a couple cans of SeaFoam in the tank when she's at about quarter-tank. That might help your carb issue. Make sure all bolts, nuts, and screws are tight to reduce any vacuum leaks, too. Redo the rear roof to stop the leaks! Did you have a chance to check out the RV systems?? [Heating, refrigerator, sink and toilet, etc.] The steps? Straighten them, then pull the fuse when you get them up. Those are real bad after time because they are exposed to wet and road slop. I know you can fix them, but they might not be worth the effort. Me, I just knocked up a simple box to use as an entry step. Cheap and never breaks. I'm SO looking forward to more road trips/camping adventures with you, bud!! Best 'o luck to you!!!!!!

@@ARuralVermonterQqjmcb182 Very Good! You need that stuff to work, trust me. Next up, RV-wise, I would empty and flush ALL water tanks. Check them for leaks once you empty them. If no leaks, use bleach [quarter-cup for every 4-5 gallons or so] and let that sit in ALL the tanks overnight. This is gonna take some water; hope you have a good water supply. Don't put well water in the fresh water tank, too much sediment and other contaminates. You'll have an algae farm in 2 weeks!!!! Use a couple squares of TP to check for leaks around the toilet base. Just fold TP around your fingers and swipe right!! hahaha! Be nice if you get up in the wee hours and have a working, flushing toilet on board!!!!! Dude, you're on this like a drunken monkey! Most issues just take common sense and patience, plus basic mech knowledge. You will handle this ALL! Best 'o luck to you!!!

recent subscriber here. figures that the camper can't go up too much past 60 because of the national maximum speed law when it was made paring with that 3 speed. it'd definitely would run better once you give it that tune up. on the other hand, 55-60 is probably the best speed to go for mileage and safety in a vehicle that large and weighty, so don't stress on the interstate! spending over 275 USD on a fill up would bust my balls as a food service worker. never been in the nor-east yet. still got a lot of this country to see, but i've lived in alaska so seeing all that snow in your winter videos is all too familiar! you've gathered a quaint gathering of followers and they all seem very supportive and willing to lend advice. you've got a good platform here and it's nice sharing a casual and humble life in the woods with a hobby you admire. i didn't visualize a dream home setting until i came across this channel, but i'm still growing into my adult pants so i have a bit of a way to go. keep doing you, man.

Cummins, all the way. Ya just can't kill em......lol. I had a 5.9 cummins 12 valve in a dodge 3/4 ton pickup. In the 11 years I owned it all the motor ever required was a set of valve covers gastets,(square cut o-rings), oil change once or twice a year along with a fuel filter and the occassional air filter. The transmission on the other hand was a piece of crap, would have been perfect if it had an allison instead of a dodge......truck had well over 300K miles when I finally sold it some 7-8 years ago. It still runs today........gotta love the 12 valves, no electrical control system, all mechanical. Loved it.....pulled like a freight train, if you hooked a chain to something all you needed was to get the tires to bite and whatever you was hooked to was coming with ya.....lol

Rural Vermonter: Your up-shifting issue sounds like a : vacuum line issue that goes to the shift-servo which is located on the passenger-side of Turbo 350s/400s........or the diaphragm inside the servo is toast. Those servos are inexpensive to replace and pretty easy to; beyond buying inexpensive Walmart carb cleaner and cleaning area sterile prior to removing and replacing shift servo.

This was quite enjoyable, glad you made the road trip relatively trouble free. For your starter issue you may want to look into adding a Ford starter solenoid remotely mounted so it is away from the heat. Very effective fix for that problem. Pretty easy conversion and not too expensive, maybe $75 for the solenoid and revamped battery cable and wires.

Speaking of motors, we recently literally just a month ago at the motorhome plant, change the engine from a Ford V10 to a V8 to improve gas milage. Not really sure if its a good or bad thing. Mileage vs. power kind of thing. (and also the the dash display is finally all digital)

Check trans modulator vacuum line for leak to fix shifting problem. This and a choke set too lean on carb can cause start up, warm up and idling issues. Engine turning over slow when hot could be timing, too advanced. Overheating is possibly a bad clutch fan, check to see if it spins too freely. The motor appears to be a Chevy 454, these are good pulling motors when they run right. Is that dual exhaust? Nice!

Looked pretty sketchy but glad it worked out. As much as I love the old Quadrajet carbs i'd toss that sucker and put a sniper EFI unit on it. That's a pretty steep investment given the original purchase price of the RV but it would likely make it a TON more reliable and may even save you some fuel.

For your shift problem, that’s a 400 hydro I’m thinking. Probably I would look at vacuum to your modulator. Pull the line off and see if there is trans fluid in it...bad diaphragm, replace the modulator. Possibly but I doubt the filter is plugged. Hard start when hot because it’s not timed or advancing properly. Probably another vacuum issue. No vacuum for a long time will seize your advance plate or dashpot on the distributor....leaving the advance plate stuck in a position where it won’t start when hot, and progressively more hotter as engine speed increases. Put a new hose on it and suck....you should see that move under the distributor cap. When I bought my $400 pile....I carefully one at a time replaced every vac line on the engine. All my vacuum heat sensors, choke pull off, air flap for the air cleaner, cruise etc. work. It cost $8

adjust your idle, its idling pretty high, there is also a vacuum line that runs from the passenger side of the transmission to the top end of the engine, check for leaks and fix them and she should shift alot better and idle smoother. also run a few cans of seafoam through the carb, Just dump a can in the gas tank every fill up, trust me works wonders, all in all great video man, its good to see folks still cruising these beasts lol.

Good to see one of Walter white type rv home, Good advice for ur next trip!-use twice amount of heat shield on exhaust near starter as well but leave ample space for air passage in between.!, Change oil to anti freeze OW-something or better for eazy cold start, and for the roof u needed to check through flash light or something from otherside and look for holes but u just used that paint, May be it was on the roof mountings or on sides,u need to work again on front and back roof again bro for ur next rainy trip

Just yesterday, a friend pulled a piece out of the carb on my 87 Bounder. Soaked it in Choke cleaner. I want to say fuel control valve. They dry out when the RV sits. Rehydrate with carb cleaner. Or buy a new one for under $10. Save the old one. Just in case!

I just bought one of these. It's an '88. It runs good but also has that starter issue sometimes which makes the battery die pretty quickly when you're trying to start it cold. My interior didn't have quite as much water damage but then, I gave a bit more for mine. Yours seems to be identical. I subscribed to your channel just to see how you do with it.

Add some plus 2 carb cleaner to your transmission. That should free up the shifting . Been there done that, worked great. About 20 second blast of plus 2 down the trans dip stick tube. Easy cheap fix if it's the shift valves.....The Old Timer

If it appears to be running hot you may want to flush the complete cooling system with fresh water check the radiator for any type of leak check all the hoses anyway completely flush the cooling system and then replace the thermostat and then top it off with some fresh antifreeze that should fix the problem because that could also be causing the hard crank situation.

the hard start is lean condition.. if you trust the motor try for a holley electronic bolt on or something. that is alot of weight surrounding a tiny fuel jet. bordering atomic. the popping is oxide, they all get it due to the coatings the carb manufacture chose. I remember these tortured vehicles well. have fun.

Lol actually have had a couple of those issues in a new RV. Just disconnect the step from the little motor bring it in and tie it up a couple of heavy duty zip ties will work. When your windshield wipers stop working get some Rainx and coat the windshield really well you can go hours and rain just glides off

If made before 2006 don't dare put in E10 in these things and in many places, this is the only kind of crap you can buy. Either on a Ford or Chevy motorhome chassis, both use crap for brake, coolant, transmission cooling lines that rust like crazy, prayer they don't break on your trip, no fun without brakes on these heavy things, engine over heating, or complete loss of transmission fluid. Three drive belts, water pump, fan, one for the hydraboost, one for the AC if that still works. They dry up when old. Does it have a canvas top, bring an umbrella along, good luck.

Turns out the correct name is “accelerator pump.” It looks like a 2” rod with a spring and a rubber washer/gasket. The washer gasket this is what dries out.

do a seafoam fuel system flush and you may want to add a oil catch can also use some seafoam in your oil and there is a intake spray to help clean your valves and your intake the oil catch can will stop it from building up the crap in your intake and it will help with engine reliability add an exhaust wrap close to the starter that should help

Of Course it will make it! It's a Chevy 454 with a Turbo 400 Transmission. If it DOES break down and having trouble finding the parts, cross the road and look in the OTHER ditch! The parts to fix it is somewhere close to you! LOL. Both of my RVs are P30 chassis' with the same 454 / T400 setup. One 29' Winnebago Chieftain and one 33' Fleetwood Pace Arrow. I am amazed the TIRES made it tho. Keep them driving. The more you drive it, the better it will run. ATB!
