So in 1983 Norway still used the AIM-9B in their F-104s....

Norway was on the way to reequipping with the F-16. Why upgrade their F-104’s?

I have submitted your question to several F-104 pilots but they seem to disagree on when the AIM-9B version was retired. What is a fact though, is that Norway replaced its latest AIM-9 version with IRIS-T in 2005. Starfighter 801 belonged to Sqdr 334 whose main objective was anti-ship missions. For that purpose 334 used the Norwegian Penguin (AGM-119) missile.

@@franklyThor one thought is that this confusion exists because Norway received the AIM-9F. So some pilots are aware of the retirement date of the original AIM-9B while others are getting confused with the retirement date of the refurbished AIM-9B, the AIM-9F. It makes sense since the AIM-9F had a much improved seeker, supposedly better than the AIM-9E, however it still had the limitations of the AIM-9B like short range, lauchg-limit etc.

Many thanks for sharing your insight. @@Αναστάσιος-σ8υ. I extended the question to a few retired F-16 pilots too, but they failed to bring reliable facts to the table.

@@franklyThor for me you are asking the wrong people. You need to ask people that were responsible for weapons storage/arming etc. pilots tend to remember weapons by their launching parameters and the AIM-9F inherited the AIM-9B launching parameters, having identical range and G limits, the essential difference being reliability, resistance to passive ECM (flares) and less probability to lose lock due to evasive maneuvers and weather conditions. All these are relevant after launch, in a fire and forget weapon. So from a pilot's prospective nothing changes. I myself learned a lot more for the F-104 from an ex commander (retired)of KEA , which was the main maintenance factory of the Hellenic Air Force, than I learned from F-104 pilots.
