Absolutely the best choice. Reminds me of my second boat a “Mirror” dinghy. My first boat was one I built at 15 years old, an 8 foot “Minimaxed” hydroplane. A trolling motor for a rudder, a sail and light winds would be a great time for such an old dude!♥️🐱♥️

Helped build a couple Carolina skiffs, plywood on frames. One was 18 and other was 20. I’m a carpenter and was laid off at the time and a couple guys paid me by the hour to help them. Learned a lot making patterns etc.. When they were built I was done. ( back to work) they did the glass and gel coating etc. but I would go by and watch how they did it and progress. I also worked on some big yachts interior trim, doors etc. but that was for a company.

Wayne, I've been a subscriber long enough to know that you're smart with at the very least adequate skills for this project. Under the excellent instruction you'll receive at CLC you'll have no major problems. I built a CLC 17 Kayak in 2007 when I was sixty. Since then, I've built three Wood Ducks in their various sizes, two Kaholo SUP's, and have a Chester Yawl kit in the barn waiting my attention. What you'll love are the compliments you'll receive everywhere you go. You won't get many from your tin skiffs. I have four tin skiffs and love them, but I don't believe I've ever had one compliment. Good luck with your build. I'll be interested to see what you build next after you've acquired the "sickness" DJ

Great Decision! Congratulations! Boat building is just awesome! But WARNNING: It is addictive! I'd built one during the pandemic in '19, no plans and without any significant woodworking skills. All learned from KZbin University and Popular Mechanic boat plans from the 1950's. by today I've build 5 boats including a stand up paddle catamaran with motor mount, three small runabouts and a 14ft kayak (with motor mount). It's ridiculous! I have no place to store, but I can't help it, the obsession has me! I've already designed my next boat and am scheming where how and when I'll be able to build it!

@@WayneTheBoatGuy I agree! One thing I recommend is: if you’re building a boat -never make it feel like work . I would quit when it stopped being a fun way to spend my time or if I was tired each week building it. Sometimes I would only only work on the boat for 30 minutes here and there , other times I’d spend an evening and a few hours would fly by. When it was done I just couldn’t believe it! The only thing more excitingly was that first ride on the lake. Pretty awesome feeling floating in a boat that you made by yourself! Cheers!

Wayne, you are doing it the right way: no matter how old a person is, they should continue to work hard to keep learning new stuff. There are way too many old people that think they know everything, and they are *not* fun to be around. Kids are fun to be around because their brains are like sponges and they're hungry to discover new ideas and experiences. If we all can retain this hunger for learning--no matter our age--it makes life SO much more fulfilling and meaningful. ROCK ON, Bootcher! 🎸

I knew this was coming. As a fellow Marylander and boat tinkering guy from kid-hood to now (mid 50s), I figured the bug was getting ready to bite you. I've built a few little stitch and glue boats (put together a little 6' Mini Boat about five years ago in a KZbin video series), and modified a lot of boats from sail to power. Look for a DM, I have a few projects underway you might be interested in. Best of luck!

Before I even came across the thought of buying a boat, a couple classmates and I built a wooden 16 foot canoe. We ended up racing it against other colleges like Cal Poly and Berkeley. Sadly we were forced to use a solar panel set up (we had 2 full size 350watt panels on the bow and stern, it was crazy) that fried itself half way through the time trials and all we walked away with was the Peoples Choice Award given to the best looking boat.
@SavageNotSalvage6 ай бұрын
Side note: the place we raced at was actually supposed to be used to cool down a NUCLEAR POWER PLANT that got built back in the day but was never given permission to operate

You know how much the cost of the material to build the boat? I'm curious how much is gonna cost for the accessories, like the tools, fiberglass, paint and sealer to build the boat with and to finish it???
@WayneTheBoatGuy6 ай бұрын
The CLC website lists several options from buying just plans to buying just the wood components. Their complete base kit includes everything (glass and resin too) but no paint or sails. The tools can add up for someone who has no tools at all. For me it looks like all I needed to buy were some clamps, an extra drill bit, dust masks and I got a new plane because I couldn't find mine! I am curious to see how many other things I will be needing along the way and I will be sure to share that info!

It can be hard when you're young and don't have money - but get creative. Is there a paddle or oars around? Maybe someone nearby has an old trolling motor you could borrow or use. Possibly try to earn some summer money from neighbors or family to buy something cheap. Remember safety is very important and don't take a small boat out in rough waters/strong currents/bad weather.
