Marshmallows are practically 99% sugar. So by toasting them you are melting them and bringing out the caramel notes of the sugar. THAT is what makes them so wonderfully delicious when toasted. Not to mention everything is better toasted. Coconut, Bread, beautiful ladies....

17:53 I learned to make Baked Alaska in Home Economics class, over 50 years ago. First you use sugar and egg whites to make meringue, beating it until it's extremely stiff - you want it to hold its shape. Get a slice of unfrosted sheet cake and put a slab of ice cream on top; the ice cream should be slightly smaller than the slice of cake, so you can see cake all around the edge. Cover the sheet cake and ice cream with a thick layer of meringue, making sure to cover the ice cream thoroughly all around the edges, sealing it off where it meets the cake. Put it in the broiler just long enough for the meringue to start getting brown. Serve immediately. The meringue and cake insulate the ice cream, so it doesn't melt, but the meringue cooks just enough. Part of the pleasure is the contrast between hot meringue and cold ice cream. Not hard to make (with proper preparation), but the results are spectacular; it's a very good way to impress guests.

@margretrosenberg420
@margretrosenberg420 15 күн бұрын
@@DeeperDownTheRabbitHole The only problem is that it's last minute. You have to serve it immediately after cooking it. So if you're having a dinner party, say, someone has to leave the table and go to the kitchen, assemble the baked Alaska slices, add meringue, bake them, and then serve the dessert. Parts of it can be done in advance; you can slice the cake, slab the ice cream and store it in the freezer, maybe even make the meringue in advance (though I'm less certain about that), but final assembly and baking must be done just before serving. Of course, if you can afford to have your parties catered this isn't a problem, but that doesn't describe most people. And unfortunately, it doesn't work with a proper birthday cake, with frosting and candles, which is what children expect at a birthday party.

Ok: 1. The top desserts should be cheesecake, brownies, & s'mores! 2. No one calls brownies "squares" 3. We love marshmallow fluff in tons of things, but toasted marshmallow is NOTHING like the plain stuff 4. Yes, I watched Cookie Monster in Sesame St!

Just did some research because I was curious. Brownies are a more specific term. "Squares" refers to a wider variety of desserts - including Brownies, but also a wide variety of other... square shaped desserts. - there are some requirements beyond just being square shaped... but uh, interesting thing I came across was that - apparently if you bake a cake with the size and shape of brownies, you can technically consider it a brownie - So I guess, cakes also count as Squares.

My cousin is from Switzerland, and we took her camping one summer when she was in the USA for a visit. We introduced her to s'mores. When she went back home, she brought graham crackers and marshmallows with her (The Swiss outperform Hershey's any day of the week. No need to bring that.). Every year for a while she asked us to send her graham crackers since she couldn't find them in Switzerland. Later she found a recipe so she could make her own from scratch. All of her friends back home LOVED them. Don't knock it 'til you try it! EDIT: The key is to roast the marshmallow really slowly over the fire so it's thoroughly heated and gooey on the inside and crispy on the outside, and then let it melt the chocolate before eating the s'mores. SO FREAKING GOOD!!! Don't be a barbarian like my brother and let the marshmallow catch fire and then put it on the chocolate. If you do that, you have a marshmallow with a burned exterior and a cold interior. 🤢 My brother's insane. How one prepares s'mores can tell you a lot about a person. :)

S'mores are a fantastic outdoor treat. If you are camping in the woods, s’mores are almost a necessity. If you don’t have a stick to roast your marshmallows on, just yoink one off a tree. The trick is to keep it from catching on fire or melting so much that it falls off the stick and into the fire.
@CLKagmi23
@CLKagmi23 3 ай бұрын
The secret of marshmallows is that they are bought and sold in the U.S. almost exclusively to use as an ingredient in baking. They are almost never eaten straight but rather used as a baking ingredient that supplies both sweetness and binding effect to stick other ingredients together. The toasting of the marshmallow is key to the s'more, and I'm willing to guess the reason why *most* of all marshmallows in America are bought and sold. When toasted, the interior of the marshmallow becomes hot and soft and gooey while the outside becomes crispy and takes on a caramelized sugar flavor. The ideal is to make these outside around a campfire because toasting the marshmallow over wood smoke specifically adds a woodsmoked flavor that cannot really be replicated in any other way. So that is why s'mores are on the list!

Part of the charm of s'mores is that preparing one for yourself over the campfire can be tricky. You need to toast the marshmallow's surface and melt the inside, enough so the heat will melt the chocolate when you assemble the s'more, but *without* getting your skewer too close to the flame and setting the marshmallow's surface on fire. Do it just right, and you feel like you've accomplished something. So there's two kinds of satisfaction in one: a demonstration of skill *and* a tasty treat!

Yeah, marshmallows on their own are like, ok at best, but trust me when I say that S'mores are amazing. Toasted marshmallows taste completely diferent than regular marshmallows because the sugar in them starts to caramelize, the the soft texter adds just the right amount of ooey-gooey goodness that just pops in your mouth with the delicious graham crackers that act sort of like a pie crust in terms of it's addition to the flavor and texture, and the chocolate is the cherry on top for just a bit more variety in the flavor. Trust me, if you ever get the chance, try a s'more with a marshmallow roasted to a perfect golden-brown over an open flame. You won't regret it. Rice Krispies are a similar story, marshmallows are only ok on their own, but we Americans have found a few things they go great with.

It use to be thinner and divided in little squares, 4 of which fit perfectly on half a graham cracker, it made for the perfect ratio of the 3 items with the American size and shape of marshmallow. You take it over and put it on a graham cracker with part of a Hershey milk chocolate bar on it. Smear the marshmallow onto it and top with another graham cracker. We also ate the soft charred marshmallow all by itself. Cheese cake is made with Philadelphia Cream Cheese that is not available in Europe, I think. My favorite pudding is Tapioca. The peanut butter “squares” you stopped at were a favorite in the school cafeteria. Those are actually a peanut butter and powdered sugar base with chocolate melted over the top. Like a Reese’s cup without a bottom layer of chocolate.

the S'More is a camping food stable for kids. we've ALL made a S'more while camping with family, or the boy scouts, or at summer camp, etc. the secret is you have to let the marshmallow actually catch fire for a second, the outside burns and gets a carmelized flavor while the inside liquifies, making it melt over the chocolate perfectly.

For a really good dessert, I put brownie batter in waffle iron to cook. add ice cream, and rizzle with caramel or hot fudge. I serve usually after cooking out with friends. Easy and oh so yummy!

Marshmallows roasted over a fire is amazing! Personally I like the outside cooked black and crunchy with the middle melty gooey. The black is charred sugar from the heat. Soooo good!

Homemade rice crispy treats are so much better than that nasty stuff they sell packaged in the grocery store. Stir in a half a cup of chopped pecans to the melting marshmallows before stirring in the rice crispies.

S'mores are a staple of every campout or summer camp week. They're best if you slightly burn the marshmallow first, and then let it sit on top of the chocolate for a few minutes to let the chocolate melt. So good.

You also need to think about butter tarts made with sugar syrup,raisins in tart shells .They melt in your mouth. The other dessert is the Nanaimo bar made with a dark chocolate base with nuts or coconut in it, topped with custard and finished of with a thick layer of melted chocolate..Both desserts originated in Canada and are the top of the Canadian best dessert list.

That 'peanut butter brownie' as pictured at 13:24 is not actually a brownie or even a 'square' - it's a kind of fudge. My wife makes them every year.

We called them scotcharoos where I grew up in the Midwest. They're a staple, but definitely not a brownie like this video suggests.

The video seems to have lumped all square/block desserts together ("brownies/squares"), bc she also mentioned lemons (lemon bars) alongside the pb squares. I personally wouldn't put them all together like that bc of completely different texture/density/etc.
