Trudeau has increased operational costs of the federal government (that is not discretionary spending on specific programs) by $151 billion. All the Federal Benefits are indexed to inflation. Trudeau increased Old Age Security for those 75+ and sent out the GST/Grocery Rebate. The Government also sent out the carbon tax rebate cheques. It is the provincial Government under Doug Ford that does nothing and is literally being called out by name by the Food Bank CEO.

@@ABC-sc2ip Responsible, thoughtful and measured regulation ensured that the air you breathe is much better that it was in track to be in the 70s, it ensures that you can drink water from a tap and not die from a bacterial infection, that if you can not afford private school that you are still educated, that the food you eat has been rigorously tested in laboratories, that a certain amount of land is divested for public green space, that far less people die in traffic today because seat belts (once thought to be impinging on personal freedoms and way too restrictive) are the rules of law, that if you can publish personal opinions, that you have recourse through the law against those who would take what’s yours if they could etc…Just because I live in a country where we have a fairly decent government and a strong standard of law, which I appreciate, does not mean I think Communism is the answer - that, comrade is called black and white thinking.

Being sick, they couldn't work. Are you proposing that we let people who are so ill they can't work starve because they MIGHT have avoided getting sick by quitting cigarettes or something? They didn't make themselves sick on purpose. And let's say you're fine with that, how would we make the determination? Subject every disability claim to a "is this your fault?" analysis? Imagine how much money it would cost to do that. Substance addition, btw, is not a character flaw, it's almost always self-medicating some sort of physical or mental illness. The person you described likely has undiagnosed depression, anxiety, fibromyalgia, or any number of other possibilities. People don't spend hundreds of dollars a month on cigarettes just because they feel like it.
