Sunset Boulevard is a 1950 American black comedy/drama film noir directed and co-written by Billy Wilder, and produced and co-written by Charles Brackett. It was named after the boulevard that runs through Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, California.
The film stars William Holden as Joe Gillis, an unsuccessful screenwriter, and Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond, a faded silent movie star who draws him into her fantasy world where she dreams of making a triumphant return to the screen, with Erich von Stroheim as Max Von Mayerling, her devoted servant. Nancy Olson, Fred Clark, Lloyd Gough and Jack Webb play supporting roles. Director Cecil B. DeMille and gossip columnist Hedda Hopper play themselves, and the film includes cameo appearances by leading silent film actors Buster Keaton, H. B. Warner and Anna Q. Nilsson.

I'm hoping this pandemic doesn't put the film to rest. Glenn Close was made for this role, we need it immortalized on film. When I saw her do this number on the revival on Broadway a few years back I got tears, which never happens and she got a standing ovation mid show. Like I was in the balcony and the whole theatre was on their feet and stopped the show with their love for her performance.

I saw her in the revival on Broadway too. Not only did she get a standing ovation in the middle of the act - the only time I've seen that - but everyone on stage applauded too, which was especially beautiful because it works both in and out of character: the other characters applauding Norma Desmond, and the other actors applauding Glenn Close.

5 жыл бұрын
@@swaralipi6224 Yes, I've seen the news. I'm kinda divided by it. A first time director is not the way to go. On the other hand, if they had gotten a really big director, it could come off as a too obvious Oscar bait and it would damage her chances again. There's the performance thing too. Some people say Glenn was too subtle in The Wife, whereas Olivia Colman schews the scenery completely with a surprisingly over the top character. Norma Desmond can come off as too obviously over the top. Is a fine line. But anyway, anything will get her an Oscar now. An eighth nomination without any wins is outrageous - think Geraldine Page winning for Trip to Bountiful. Thinking back, Jessica Tandy won her Oscar at 81 years of age. Glenn still have time.

Yes. A neighbor has the Streisand CD Back To Broadway, and played me S."s version. It sounded so generic, and emotionally detached. I kept on thinking at various points, "That's not the way to sing that line" When Glenn Close thunders, "I've come home at last!" Glenn's cadence and volume are exactly right - and send chills down my spine.

What I adore about her portrayal is you can FEEL the decades she's been away from what she loves. So many other actresses I've seen take on this number come across as if they are either excited to be on film for the first time, or maybe had been away a few years. With Glenn Close, the swell and roller coaster of her emotions truly convey how her heart has ached to return for longer than she can remember. It's just so beautiful, raw, and genuine

EXACTLY. Sure they can sing better, but it's the acting behind it that really makes it a deep performance and Glenn Close is ON. POINT. After all if any of there people actually KNOW the story line it is about a: SILENT FILM ACTRESS (they did not use voice, ONLY their FACE) who has become irrelevant after sound film was created. THUS her facial emotions and acting are more important than her voice. Let the haters talk, she still has her Tony's and is apparently filming Sunset Boulevard the musical while in London.

Without a doubt, Glenn Close is the most wronged actress in the history of cinema. Total lack of respect, consideration and humanity the Academy of Oscars never gave her a statuette. An extremely talented, unique, special, competent, deserving, magnanimous actress ... who unfortunately never had the recognition she truly deserves. It was already for Glenn Close to have at least 3 Oscars. I hope that justice will finally be done at the Oscar 2021 with her interpretation of the film Hilbilly Elegy. I hope Netflix will make a heavy and strong campaign. The Academy will never be able to correct all the regrettable injustices that Glenn Close suffered throughout his career. This movie star cannot die without winning an Oscar. Let the entire voting public have a minimum of compassion and empathy. God bless Glenn Close. I hope so - she was already cheated the last time she was nominated for The Wife - and to tell the truth she was cheated for Albert Nobbs as well (I've never seen that movie, but I applaud her for the mere fact of moving beyond her comfort zone, which I think is the mark of the great actor)...I can't imagine anyone else doing Norma justice; she is the only one who makes us also see the glorious Norma as she once was and how she hopes to be again - the worst mistake for this role would be to play her like a "What ever Happened to Baby Jane" knockoff. And I love her voice - a lot of those Broadway people sound as if they are straining their voice to death when belting,, but she just sounds effortless. My - what a Grizabella for Cats she might have been - perhaps could be still; in my opinion it's not a young woman's role.

Am I the only one who thinks Glenn Close is arguably a better interpreter than LuPone, at least in this role? Good singing has nothing to do with how high, or long you can belt. Those are crowd-pleasers yes, but Close's idiomatic phrasing, sonorous chest voice and top-notch acting are more impressive to me than LuPone's mannerisms.

fol jamb You’re right in your assessment of Ms Close’s vulnerabilities with respect to the singing, but it plays EXACTLY as the character needs to be played: a has been that has lost touch of her craft and her society. While there arn’t many things to grumble about, they play well into the character. And Glenn Close’s portrayal of Norma Desmond is spot on, which in my opinion the other women who played her failed to nail. Glenn submerged herself into this role and literally made it her own, which is why she was able to come back 30 years later and sell the house out months in advance. She could still go out on Broadway and sell 5 or 10 years worth of shows in a heartbeat. The other ladies could never accomplish that. As for what happened, the story of Sunset Boulevard is one of those where you have to be in the mood to sit through the storyline. Even the movie had problems. The reason the stage show has a following now in the US and abroad is partly to do with the actress and then the music. Glenn Close revamped the show with just her presence and ability to connect with the audience. From there, it was just having to play videos until she came back around.

I dont know why I'm frightened I know my way around here The cardboard trees, the painted seas, the sound here Yes, a world to rediscover, But I'm not in any hurry, And I need a moment. The whispered conversations In overcrowded hallways. The atmosphere as thrilling here as always. Feel the early morning madness, Feel the magic in the making, Why, everythings as if we never said goodbye. I've spent so many mornings Just trying to resist you. I'm trembling now, you cant know how I've missed you. Missed the fairy tale adventures In this ever spinning playground. We were young together. I'm coming out of makeup, The lights already burning. Not long until the cameras will start turning. And the early morning madness, And the magic in the making, Yes, everythings as if we never said goodbye. I dont want to be alone, That's all in the past. This world's waited long enough, I've come home at last. And this time will be bigger And brighter than we knew it. So watch me fly, we all know I can do it. Could I stop my hand from shaking, Has there ever been a moment With so much to live for? The whispered conversations In overcrowded hallways. So much to say, not just today, but always. We'll have early morning madness, We'll have magic in the making, Yes, everythings as if we never said goodbye. Yes, everythings as if we never said goodbye, We taught the world new ways to dream. I just wanted to keep track of it, if you enjoy it it’s fine too 🧡

Here's my 2 cents...As a big fan of the film, and particularly Gloria Swanson's iconic performance, I have to say that vocally Lupone is sensational; her phrasing is perfect, her 0:59 stylings are engaging and wondrous; she shines so bright, I could listen to her all day. However, I feel that she just isn't quite mature or perhaps experienced enough to understand Norma, who is supposed to be a reclusive and forgotten silent era film star in her late 50's. She has the passion, the presence, the singing chops, but dramatically she needed to be more damaged, childlike, melodramatic for the role. Glenn Close, (two years older than Lupone and a seasoned Hollywood actress) although her singing isn't quite in the same league, her performance as Norma is both moving and deranged, with undercurrents of camp fragility, mirroring Swanson in the film, all the while taking the role to a place of utter intangible torment and comic tragedy. I believe Close really understood what a vulnerable and childlike person Norma was, and she portrays that brilliantly. Both performances are without a doubt equally great, but tonally and dramatically vastly different.

Glenn Close gives the story with strong acting that convinces all who view this knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that she IS Norma Desmond. Riveting, magnificent, and beautiful. The way she phrases the word pictures, singing the melody is unforgettable.

Glenn Close starred in the original American full production in Los Angeles before the show transferred to Broadway. I was fortunate to see her performance twice in LA and once again in New York. I saw most of the other divas in the role later as well. Something special and rare happened in those early days in LA: everyone in the audience knew they had just seen one of the greatest performances of their life and exactly in unison everyone leaped to their feet all at the same moment when Glenn came out to a thunderous standing ovation. She also received a standing O after this song as I recall. I can only recall the same happening with Michael Crawford in Phantom, and more recently with the original cast of Hamilton.

Musical stage work is not about a great voice, or great acting, or fine comedic timing or incredible dancing. Its about just enough of each of those attributes that the role requires plus an extraordinary stage presence. It is the latter that gets people to reach into their wallets to spend serious dollars for a ticket, and then do it again three weeks later dragging others with him. Close proved herself able to get those wallets open in this role, whether it translates on a KZbin clip is irrelevant.

I saw Glen sing this when she was in the original Broadway production of "Sunset Boulevard". She litterally stopped the show with her performance of this song! After she finished singing it, the audience (myself included) jumped out of their seats with riotous applause which seemed to go on forever! Will never ever forget that experience! I have seen many shows on Broadway & the West End over the years and never experienced anything like that. She is a legend!!!

Same in LA where the American show originated before going to Broadway. Huge standing ovation again when she appeared for her curtain call...everyone leaped to their feet at once in unison. We knew we had just seen one of the greatest performances of our lifetime!

As a kid I was a huge ALW fan. I had the DVD of this concert from the age of 11 or so. I'll never forget Michael Ball singing 'Gethsemane' or Glenn Close singing 'As If We Never Said Goodbye'. She's not the voice of the century but her overall performance is utterly captivating.

Everyone talks about Streisand singing this at the very beginning of her comeback concert, BUT Glenn does a smashing good turn with this. I think she's great. And for me it is a real surprise. I had no idea she could sing.
