In early May 2011 the SNP won an historic majority in the Scottish Parliament, bring closer the possibility of an independent Scotland. It got me thinking about the original Wars of Independence in the late 13th and early 14th centuries featuring William Wallace and Robert Bruce and in particular, the Declaration of Arbroath, signed by the nobles and common folk of Scotland on 6th April 1320. As a result I wrote this song. The chorus is loosely based on the most famous passage of the Declaration, namely ..... "For as long as one hundred of us shall remain alive, we shall never in any wise consent to submit to the rule of the English, for it is not for glory we fight, nor riches, or for honour, but for freedom alone, which no good man loses but with his life."

In 2008, when Craig Ferguson (son of Glasgow) became a US citizen, he gave a speech at the Boston Independence Day Celebration quoting this passage from the Declaration of Albroth reminding us there would be no United States and the freedoms we have had it not been for the Scots. More than a third of the delegates that signed the Declaration of Independence were Scots. Most of the authors, including Thomas Jefferson were Scots. Thank you Scotland. (Thank you for Craig Ferguson as well.)

My grandparents left Clydebank for New York in the 1920s due to extreme poverty while London, her so called 'government', ignored her. @UCIk3074r6jxuGygJ9GvIHaA English point of view you share. Of course you would want Scots, and Irish for that matter to feel like england freed them. You can save you white washing of history. The people you claim were made ‘free’ in 1790. Never asked for anything but to be left alone. Westminster can run England. But they can fuck off from Scotland and Ireland. Robert the Bruce was the descendant of a Norman carpetbagger who, along with a few others, were invited into Scotland to subdue those Clans who maintained their independence vis a vis the Scottish Crown. Robert the Bruce and his pals weren't fighting for freedom for ordinary Scots, they were fighting for a country for themselves. As a result they introduce Norman Style feudalism to Scotland and we still suffer from that today. It was the descendants of same Aristocracy that signed the Declaration of Arbroath and who had declared they would never surrender to English rule, that first of all skipped off to be King of England and a hundred years later signed the Treaty of Union which effectively let England rule Scotland. A Parcel of Rogues and traitors to Scotland. Today we have another Parcel of Rogues who want independence from England only to surrender that independence to the EU. Scots need to waken up, they have a bad habit of allowing themselves to be led astray.

@@bigboaby555 - I know he was also the descendant of a Scot but on his father's side he was Norman and his mentality was Norman.. As for his actions once he became king? What history book do you read? Bruce, when he became King, established Norman style feudalism whereby Scots were reduced to serfdom, and it was a worse type of serfdom than in England. Previously the land had belonged to the Clan, now it became the property of the "Laird". In England, at the dissolution of the monasteries, the monastery lands were sold of to a wide variety of people. In Scotland John Knox wanted to rent out the Monastery lands and use the rents to educate the people, the aristocracy (the descendants of those who signed the Declaration of Arbroath) said NO and seized the lands for their own greedy selves. After the civil wars of the 17th Century and once industrialisation began "maisterless" Scots (the unemployed) could be and were enslaved, they were whipped and branded for begging and for repeated offending could be hanged or shipped of to the colonies as "Christian servants" (as opposed to Negroes) or could sell themselves as indentured servants to the colonies in Virginia. Slavery in the Coal mines in Scotland was abolished by the Westminster parliament in the 1790s. The social and economic structure that enabled all that was established by Bruce and his fellow "Scots" of Norman descent. Bruce and co. weren't fighting for an independent Scotland, they were fighting for a kingdom and land for themselves. And their descendants are the ones who sold out Scotland in 1603 and 1707.

@@fredgillespie5855 wow , took a while to read all that pish . for a start Norman feudilism was established in Scotland long before The Bruce took the throne ! and you fail to realise he was a legitimate heir to the Scottish throne . your living in some Norman conspiracy bubble . The Bruce lived WITH the common people when he was sheltered as an outlaw , hence one of the reasons he gave aberdeen its great charter . Bruce's fighting men and allies were clans like the Macdonalds , Macgregors etc ...who he spoke the Gaelic tongue with and his closest right hand man was James Douglas , no Norman conspiracies here pal , just blood , guts and death , as his 3 brothers found out to their misfortune . And as for John knox ?? god knows why your bringing him up in a conversation about Robert the Bruce , he probably wanted to use the land of monastries cause they belonged to catholics you pleb , and as for educating people with the money , well we all know what his teachings would be . fire and brimstone and turning people to the 'real' faith . And I'm not even going to bother commenting on the post 1700's nonsense

@@bigboaby555 - The English who were in Malcolm 3rds court were sent packing on Malcolm's death. No more Normans till David i returned from being reared in the English (Norman) court and brought a band of Norman Knights with him (Fitz Alan as High Steward, De Ballol and de Bruce among others.). These soon married in to the Scots nobility and 3 generations later they are fighting each other for the Scottish Crown. The Scottish Crown only controlled part of Scotland, the rest belonged to the Clans and the Vikings. After Bannockburn Bruce set out to Normanise the whole country and bring it to order. That wasn't completed till after 1745 when the "New Parliament of Great Britain," which included some of the descendants of those who signed the Declaration of Arbroath, sent troop to finish the job. The MacDonalds? on a couple of occasions they formed an alliance with English Kings against the Scottish king. "You don't know why I brought Knox into the conversation". A bit slow aren't you. I was talking about the feudal system that Bruce and his pals of Norman descent imposed on Scotland. How at the dissolution of the Monasteries John Knox had wanted to use the Monastery lands for the benefit of the common people by renting them out and using the money to educate the people - all of them. It never happened because our Aristocracy of Norman descent stole it all for themselves. That is why there is such a concentration of land ownership in Scotland till this day. Now, if your tiny mind can't figure out the social and economic consequences of that then you may as well keep banging you big drum for "The Bruce."

The powerful London people are becoming very nasty already, and things will get mch worse. It will be a hard struggle, but we will gain our freedom. We also have many friends internationally and in Europe which they don't have. They are seen as being oppressors, arrogant and exploiters, whereas we are seen as being kind, gentle and brave.

The nearest British ("English") equivalent are the Celts. To the English, these Heroes of the Mists of Time have become no more than myth themselves. They have replaced them with their own mythology - "The Saxons" - an upstart invader who were themselves usurped and eradicated to make way for the modern-day exploitationists - The Normans. (Whose biggest claim to fame is that they appear to have been good at embroidery - as were as mass-slaughter, land-grab, regicide and filicide.) Saor Alba!

If Celts defended each other like brothers, the English could not trample us. England despises and exploits and then wonders that peoples all over the world resent and resist her! Look how she set Scotti against the Irish to create plantations. And Scots and Irish died to make Westminster rich. Who died in the coal mines that powered the Mills that made the Gentry rich? Welsh, Irish, Breton, Scot -- we have so much in common. And we don't need to depend on England's tender mercies; we are part of Europe, which has treated us all better than have the English.

Should the day come when Scotland raises arms against England in the name of independence, Scotland will get a soldier out of me. It may have been hundreds of years since my ancestors were forced out, but I'll fight for Scotland's freedom in their name.

The Union between England and Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, is sacred and unbroken. We defeated Napoleon together, we launched and led an industrial revolution, we advanced science, medicine and technology together. We exported our language and culture across the world. We liberated concentration camps, we defeated fascism, we won two World Wars together. We invented the steam engine, the jet engine, the world wide web and the electric motor together. Our democracy is the mother of all parliaments, and our civil service is a model for the world. Everything we are, everything we achieved, was conceived and birthed by the Union. It made us stronger together. Quis Separabit?
