We look at the fight to save tribal elders and Native language speakers as the pandemic rips through Indian Country, with Indigenous communities facing woefully inadequate healthcare, lack of governmental support, and the living legacy of centuries of colonialism. Native Americans have died from COVID-19 at twice the rate of white people across the U.S. To combat this crisis, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has prioritized elders who speak the Dakota and Lakota languages to receive vaccines. “Knowing that there were a lot of elders who were at really, really high risk, this was a concern from the very beginning,” says Jodi Archambault, a citizen of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the former special assistant to President Barack Obama on Native American affairs. The parents of Nola Taken Alive, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council, both recently died of COVID-19. “My parents were very humble people,” she says. “They played a very important role, not only in my siblings’ and our family’s lives, but also to the entire community of Standing Rock.” We also speak with Alex White Plume, a former vice president and president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of the Pine Ridge Reservation who is a Lakota interpreter.

I have some Maori friends here in the US. I am Choctaw and my guy is Apache. Our daughter's name is Hawoonaki and has a long story behind it. It means 'Two Doves'. My guy speaks Apache fluently and I have and do collect many of our language archives in Choctaw. We have a school in Oklahoma. He and I have been learning Choctaw together and my children and grand children want to learn also.

This is incredibly sad, the cost of this virus keeps growing. Losing tribal elders with great knowledge of the past, oral traditions, language are huge loses that can not be brought back. My heart hurts for them. Hopefully with more vaccinations things can improve.

I’ve heard American Indians refer to themselves as such, and don’t want to be affiliated with the United States. Funny, in Russian this conflict doesn’t exist because, since India is named after the Indus River, their people are just called Indus people. In English, the words happened to clash. Maybe indigenous people? Maybe “those of pre-Colombian origins”? If you wanna be completely correct, call them Navajo, Iroquois, Sioux, Lenni-Lenape.

@@MRender32 Indigenous people is probably a more accurate label. But what is most important here, is that many cultures are going extinct, and many are turning a blind eye to this fact.

But Amy, please don''t cut off people you've asked to contribute with a corporate countdown clock just so you can fit it all into pre-fab soundbite templates--ESPECIALLY if you're going to interrupt by surprising them with videos of their recently passed loved ones speaking. Please write to the President about these environmental issues and FREE LEONARD PELTIER!

The neighboring towns that surround the reservation, are not wearing masks at all. It is very frustrating, and disrespectful. These towns know how their actions can affect the residents on the reservation, but yet South Dakota continues with not implementing mask wearing statewide.

@@colonelangus8247 my right to swing my arm ends at your nose. With a basic understanding of fluid dynamics and viral transmission, the only solution is a lockdown. It can be done better or worse. If the government gave you 2,000 bucks a month to stay home and distributed food, digs, beer, and made sure folks were feeling alright, a lockdown wouldn't be so bad. Unfortunately they aren't going to be so cool about it. We gotta do it on our own for one another. I don't want the guilt of giving the bug to others, and I trust that my neighbors don't want to give it to me. Unfortunately that also seems to be a long shot. Wake up Colonel, we are all we have.

Education is the way to preserve the culture and promote strength and identity. I support the preservation of all languages of First Nations people. I also support the preservation of first language for anyone who takes English as a second language. How else can younger people talk to elders who speak mostly in their first languages?
