Punjab is grappling with an outstanding debt of Rs 3.74 lakh crore, constituting more than 46 percent of the state's GDP of over 8 lakh crore. This translates to a per capita debt of Rs 1.24 lakh for each of the state's three crore residents. Punjab, once India’s richest state, has slipped and fallen behind.
