Come celebrate the 65th Anniversary of As the World Turns with the one and only, Rosemary Prinz. Rosemary will join me live in The Locher Room on Thursday, April 1 at a special time 12 Noon EST / 9 a.m. PST.
Rosemary, a native New Yorker, has had a long career on stage, film and television. She made her television debut in 1954 on a short-lived soap opera, First Love, as the wife of aviator Chris (Frankie Thomas), but her most famous role to date has been her role as Penny Hughes on As the World Turns. Rosemary played the role from 1956 -1968 and returned many times over the years with her last appearance in Oakdale in 2000. Penny is the daughter of Nancy (Helen Wagner) and Chris Hughes (Dan MacLaughlin) and sister of Dr. Bob (Don Hastings). Penny's relationship with Jeff Baker (Mark Rydell) was daytime television's first teen romance and one of ATWT's most popular couples.
In 1970, Rosemary signed-on to play the role Amy Tyler on the debut of a new ABC soap opera called, All My Children where her character would oppose the Vietnam War, which Prinz herself opposed. She was also the only All My Children performer to ever earn above-the-title billing during her run. She also joined the cast of Ryan's Hope in 1988 where she played Sister Mary Joel.
Join us as Rosemary and I look back on her incredible career.

I should not have watched this at night. I can't tell you how excited I am watching this. When watching the video dedicated in the memory of Mrs. Nixon, I was thinking that Ms. Prinz should be more recognized (unless she doesn't like to give interviews.) I can't tell you how I almost jumped out of my skin when you said that you would interview her tomorrow. It's a blessing that you honored her with an interview. Please interview Dr. Joe Martin and thank you for this show.

WOW she is sharp and seem to be in good spirits. Congrats! I read she wasn't a big Irna fan and fought Irna, and Irna was tough as nails. Irna came from struggle and alot of pain so that probably why she ruled with an iron fist.

I love Rosemary Prinz! My mother watched ATWT every day and Penny was my favorite character. In the 1980s, she played the mother in Steel Magnolias when it was still an Off-Broadway play at the WPA Theater in Chelsea. She was wonderful. Thank you for interviewing this talented lady.

I was waiting for the Irna Phillips bomb. I had heard for years how Rosemary didn’t care for her, at all. I also heard others like Don Hastings say she was a very tough woman but he was able to work for her. Eileen Fulton had also mention how Irna called all the actors by their characters name. I guess she had to be tougher in a mans business (at that time) but I’m also sure she was like how Rosemary described her. I remember GL did a tribute to her with Beth Ehlers portraying her. Great interview. Keep up the good work.

Alan, I love your interviews with soap stars! I love what you are doing! We are coming up on some other anniversaries - 11 years since ATWT's cancellation in September 2010, 10 years since AMC and OLTL's cancellation in 2011, and of course, the resurgence of hope in the all-too-brief online resurrection of AMC and OLTL by Prospect Park in 2013. Is there any way you could maybe do some show to commemorate these events? I know there were various lawsuits between Prospect Park and ABC - can anyone, who wants to, legally talk about the events, what really was going on at ABC or even at Proctor and Gamble with the cancellation of these beloved shows? The fan following is still so strong, as evidenced by your great Zoom interviews. Bless you and thank you, Alan! It is so good to see and hear Rosemary Prinz!

@@edgefan4437 Yeah...and it seemed Ms. Prinz wanted to just do it for a short time (as per her specifications upon Agnes Nixon's offering) but then she could have returned, especially towards the ending for a short time (I mean, she did do "Ryan's Hope" for a moment as Sister Mary Joel)... Overall, it's just great to see her thriving today :)

Kudos, Alan! This was truly great. Two of my favorite actresses featured within a week of each other: Rosemary Prinz and Louise Shaffer! I started following soaps sometime in the '60s, and Ms. Prinz was a STAR back in the day. Rosemary Prinz, Louise Shaffer, Ellen Holly, Donald May, Jacquie Courtney, Robin Strasser, George Reinholt, Barbara Rodell, Maeve McGuire, Denise Alexander, Charita Bauer, Marie Masters, John Colenback -- so many magnificent actors back in the day! How appropriate that The Locher Room is celebrating its one year anniversary on the same day of the 65th anniversary of As The World Turns. ❤️❤️ Wow. Penny and Jeff, daytime's first "super couple". I think it would have been extra special if Mark Rydell who played Jeff Baker could've been a part of this as well. He's 92, and Rosemary is 90. In the late '70s the show was going to do some kind of mystery story with Penny. There's an episode here on KZbin where Bob is talking to Penny who's in London and Bob becomes concerned after talking to her a couple of times. The storyline really don't go anywhere and it was dropped I think because they were changing head writers during that time. It wouldn't be until the '80s that Penny/Rosemary would make several guest appearances which I thoroughly enjoyed. Kim and Bob's wedding, Nancy and Chris's 50th anniversary, to coincide with the show's 30th anniversary, and sadly Chris's funeral. I think she made some appearances when Nancy, Kim and Bob were in London around the time Sabrina was introduced. ❤️❤️❤️

Her last appearance on the show was in 2000 for Christmas. They should have brought her back for her mom Nancy's funeral and for the end of the show since she was one of the originals, why didn't they invite her back for that?

Ms. Prinz is great at setting the scene for what it was like in the early days of the daytime drama. Makes me want to hear more. I Boy, Irna Phillips be may have been ingenious at bringing the genre to television and a viewing audience but she sounded like a terror to the actors! That is unfortunate, she could have treated her talent with humanity and trusted them to do the work without intimidation. The legacy that you all left, however, is wonderful and long-lasting.
