The interesting thing was how many conservatives were concerned about the debate format (On CNN, moderators with liberal track records, no audience, muted microphones, etc.). But Trump knew that all he needed was to get Biden on stage to show how feeble Biden is. And all Trump had to do was be on stage, give reasonable answers, and show himself to be the energetic, confident alternative to the declining Biden. It was a master class in using the media to his advantage.

He's been on Trump's short list since Iowa. But there are a few so it's unclear who he will go with, but Glenn Beck said months ago when he was suggesting Vivek Trump told him "That's what everyone's telling me..." so I know he's taking it very seriously. As a business leader Trump knows the value of advisors and when they are all telling you the same thing, that does mean something. I think honestly the only thing that would give him any real pause on it is Vivek has so much potential you could put him almost anywhere and he might be best case scenario for that role. That's a tough resource to decide what to do with... whatever you do with him it's a big loss for the things you are NOT doing with him.

To me this is the most important takeaway of the night. The only way Trump could have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory would have been to do grandstanding victory laps while shooting fish in a barrel. It would have looked cruel and unnerving and made it feel slightly scary to give him power. Normally Trump wasn't able to resist that urge though... now we are seeing a more mature and restrained Trump, and the optics were actually really good. He let his opponent beat himself and even looked a bit merciful. It actually makes me feel better about Trump and I was already going to vote for him anyway. His lust for overkill has always been his Achille's heel, and it looks like he's making some progress getting that under control. At the risk of getting hate comments I'm inclined to think this is him taking note of Vivek's playbook.

Vivek is VERY impressive, and should get a senior cabinet position, but it makes no sense to make him VP. Cynically, the system encourages the VP choice to be someone who might bring in other voters, like from a minority group or a key swing state. The war against Trump is so extreme at this point and has so many allies in powerful places, that there is some fear or question as to whether Trump can overcome it. Will they succeed in jailing him? Might he even be deleted? Nothing is off the table these days because the TDS is SO strong now. Vivek actually guarantees redundancy in MAGA, no matter what happens with Trump, you still end up with the same outcome, maybe even a more marketable version of it. It really discourages a sneak campaign to cheat Trump out of anything, you use up all your coupons and still are no better off. In this case I think it's wise to have a duplicate on the same ticket.
