Patricia, would you say As Told by Ginger is your most favorite cartoon?
@OldSchoolLane5 жыл бұрын
Sandwich God It’s in one of my top 5 Nicktoons of all time. But it’s not my all time favorite. I have to sit down and contemplate on what is my all time favorite because there are so many. Cartoons like Batman: The Animated Series, Gargoyles, and Cybersix have dark, moody atmospheres and risky storytelling, especially for its time. Avatar: The Last Airbender is a nearly flawless masterpiece with the perfect balance of being serious and funny with great storytelling, characters, and a unique world. Other slice of life cartoons like Doug, Daria, Hey Arnold, and Azumanga Daioh have special places in my heart. Newer cartoons from this decade such as Adventure Time, Regular Show, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, Harvey Beaks, The Legend of Korra, TMNT 2012, Infinity Train, and Carmen Sandiego 2019 have been great.

One of the reasons this show is important to me is because as a kid, I was told that people only fell in love within their own race. So when I saw Ginger and Darren get together, I was floored. I had never seen anything like that in my life. I realized I could date anyone regardless of their race. My mom was furious. She said “yes it can happen with other people but not YOU!” Big yikes.
@appalachiabrauchfrau Жыл бұрын
ah, another intersex person with race purist parents, there's dozens of us! My mom always said that I've already got one strike (my SWYER syndrome) I don't need to make dating harder. First gf was half black, second was Korean, third was Italian (my parents are WASPs, so southern europeans "don't count" as caucasians or something) every one of them made her apoplectic. She wasn't upset they were girls, though. "Sorry babe, my mom isn't upset you're female, she's upset you're not Anglo." Married an eastern european guy, boy was that a hurdle for her. Seeing interracial couples on so many kids cartoons was weird for me, coming from a family that doesn't even like dating outside of ethnicity.

The thing he said at the end bit about how the final episode made him realize how much he actually cared about the characters really struck a nerve with me cause it was the same with me. That shit was peak girly show for girly girls that my man ass would ashamed to get caught talking about at school (considering I was already the weird cartoon/gamer dude playing and watching shit 'made for children') Around the final episode is when I realized that I had watched every single episode at least once and was super invested in the characters. Still didn't admit that shit of course, toxic masculinity runs deep and I didn't want to get caught being whatever word used to be today's 'soyboy' (wasn't that just the f-word?). as of lately the only shows that had decent chances as far as I remember was Loud House , Thundermans (finished its run) and Kid Danger (its cartoon spinoff got cut off real quick) and Fairy Odd Parents (Nick kept canceling and bringing it back as if it was Family Guy). For years we had to Wait for Rocko and Zim and Arnold to resolve decently in some way shape or form. Nickelodeon has had issues for decades with not finishing some shows comprehensibly. Are You Afraid of The Dark for years had disputes over legal distribution rights of certain seasons as half of it was done in the US and other half done in Canada. In terms of Cartoons that got cut too soon with Still no resolve yet is Ah! Real Monsters and Angry Beavers. Rumor on Ah! It’s easy to tell someone to hang in there, that it gets better and in time, all of this bullying and shit you go through will not matter anymore, but when you’re in the thick of it and it is your life, that talk can sometimes feel like empty words. If you’re lucky, the bullies get their licks in and they move on; but it can also be the worst case scenario where the harm they inflict on you is something you may not recover from. If you’re able to simply survive past it, then you have something in you that got you through it, and the more you succeed afterwards and leave it behind in the past, as something that shaped you but no longer rules you, then it’s all the more miraculous and worthy of celebration. Courtney was one of my favorite characters in the show but man did they do her dirty by season 3. I always considered her the unofficial 5th member of the gang but after they went to highschool she became a secondary mock character and when her family went bankrupt they basically wrote her out of the show. She didn't even appear at the end when they're all adults and it still upsets me.
@mdiallo073 жыл бұрын
I wondered the same thing...she was pretty good to Ginger, at times more than Dodie was. I don't get why Courtneys so called friends weren't around when she was getting bullied.
@kou71913 жыл бұрын
@@mdiallo07 I sorta see the message they went for that being popular isn't the be all end all Dodie so desperately wanted us to believe, but Courtney wasn't just some random rich popular girl, she genuinely wanted to be Ginger's friend, so everyone, even Ginger giving her the cold shoulder like that, specially after everything they went through together just feels wrong.
@mdiallo073 жыл бұрын
@@kou7191 I agree, especially being that they dealt with kids that were older than them once they got to high school and didn't care about Courtney being rich. I guess Courtney had to get a reality check a bit since she was the popular girl in their middle school. However I also think since it wasn't many High school episodes, the writers didn't have much of a chance to write more storylines that could have went a long way. But I don't think Ginger really turned her back on Courtney bc it seemed like in High school they didn't even share classes together and Ginger was going through her whole thing with Darren and adjusting to a new environment being High school teachers and older students. However I will say they certainly didn't have Courtneys "friends" Miranda or Mipsy around when she was going through all bullying.
@kou71913 жыл бұрын
@@mdiallo07 Doesn't help the last we see of her, not counting the wedding, is her genuinely crying helplessly on Ginger's shoulder while Ginger's reaction wasn't sympathetic but kinda....dismissive. Sure, she had her own baggage with Darren but it just felt out of character for her to not even react to that

Most of the time when a show is scheduled for cancellation, the creators make a goodbye or sad episode to draw in viewers before cancellation "jumping the shark" trying to reel in a last effort to save the show. It is possible this was the final episode at some point, but when Nick renewed their contract and bought new episodes, they probably thought..."Wicked Game, never happened, retconned lol"

Overall, a down-to-earth slice of life done right. And hey, don't forget this being one of the few cartoons where the characters *actually changed their clothes!* Funny to read people commenting in their younger years how they were weirded out with their faces. I had no problem, except for the hair of Ginger's mom looking like if it an *ACME anvil* fell over her head. Now, after touching this cartoon, I wonder when will you introduce to the younger generation about the OTHER one before this classic was made: *Aaahh!!! Real Monsters!* 6:50 Don't worry, I hear ya... The same happened to me after knowing that the *bald kid names Jonny* from *_"Ed, Edd n Eddy"_* is actually *BLACK!* Some fun fact that no one would be aware of it until someone pointed it out, so color me surprised (no pun intended) about how come such detail didn't turn into a meme. *EDIT*- W E L P. . . Should be biting my tongue and kicking myself at the same time because of this. Not only I recently discovered about this *Black Rolf meme,* but also the fact that its creator is starting a new cartoon for Netflix... *REALLY, INTERNET... REALLY?!* You're making me look like some charmingly naive baby boomer in front of everyone. I swear to God, this was unexpected!

@@Nightman221k I don't really see Miranda's attachment to Courtney as romantic. While I think deep down she does care for Courtney, I think her primary reasoning for befriend Courtney is access to the privilege and status Courtney has. She dislikes Ginger because Ginger is a "good girl", unmaterialistic, enjoys simple things. Courtney fawns over Ginger. If Ginger became her BFF she'd have so much influence over Courtney. The kind Miranda wouldn't agree with, which would ultimately pusher her out
