That's because the only thing keeping people from making friends, maybe not CLOSE friends but just general friends, is our hang ups. When we get over them for a few minutes, its quite easy. That's why its so easy for very young children to make friends. There are no hang ups, no baggage, no what ifs swirling around in their head. It's just, "Hey you like power rangers?" "Yeah!" "Me too!" Boom, friends.

Quite surprised people din realize Kanamori also need Asakusa, not in financial way since Kanamori can easily find other means to make money (which are even more profitable than making Anime). Kanamori is empty. She ignores the void by focusing on survival: making money. She disguises her emotions as rational thoughts eg. not wanting to overstress her friends = giving artistic freedom; hoping Asakusa overcome her social phobia = staff training; appreciating her friends going out of their way by treating ramen = staff motivation. Kanamori isn't totally emotionless. She still had to force herself into having only 2000 yen at all time, to curb impulsive spending. Also Asakusa's imagination (sketchbook in monorail) totally won Kanamori over.

@@jonnyguydenton you're totally right, that's how I perceive Kanamori, and I actually think that she suggested the anime not only because of money but because she knew her friend had that dream. She actually cares, she just has a different way of showing it. And I think that even when she doesn't call it a friendship, she has stayed because she actually enjoys Asakusas company. I think it's a true and beautiful friendship and it makes me really happy.

I think Asakusa is the only anime character I can relate to most. Imaginative, draws, is a gremlin, enthusiastic about her passions and is an introvert that has a desire for friends, but can’t quite relate to them/socialize. Kanamori has to be one of the most realistic anime characters i've ever come across and i love her. She doesn't fall for idealistic bullshit people try to push on her and she tries to find value in anything even people. Whether emotional or profitable. I love the fact that she feels like shes preparing for adulthood despite everyone around her saying she has plenty of time to be a kid, while true her friendship with her classmates does teach her she can relax now and then.

日本人でも伝わらなかったりするなら、比喩表現は結構難しいですね。 妖怪信仰もマジカルと訳されているので、英訳だと金森のイメージは易しい言葉で説明してくれる、理知的な女性って感じに見えます。 日本語だと、シニカルな感じが強調されて、それぞれ違った魅力がありますね。

salamander7125 there used to be this popular belief that Tanuki is capable of magically impersonating any person, but they need a leaf to do that. Hence “Tanuki ja nai (I’m not a Tanuki)”= “I don’t know any magic trix.”

Tanukis are shape shifting tricksters. Unlike foxes they are generally harmless, and motivated by yummy food, having fun, and making a quick buck (though the tanuki from kachi kachi mountain is a pretty big exception since it eats an elderly woman). There are different iterations of this according to local folklore, but one trick they are frequently depicted to play is to turn leaves into money, pay for goods from a person, and then scamper off. Sometimes they will cooperate and turn themselves into wares which their friend will then sell, and they will simply walk back to their burrow at night (bunbuku chagama). Not speaking as an expert, just stuff from my childhood.

@@GriseWeisshark As far as i understand (I've only ever studied japanese as a hobby, so no official training), a "chagama" is literally a type of teapot and "bukubuku" is an onomatopoeia for the puttering sound that they make when you are boiling water in them. But yes, "Bunbuku Chagama" is a wellknown japanese folktale about a tea-kettle tanuki, so it may be where Bukubuku Chagama got the inspiration for their player name.

i remember watching this anime when it was released and looking back at it now that im graduating high school, i feel like shit. im exactly like asakusa, no joke. i draw, im bad with crowds, making friends is hard, i get passionate over architechture, etc. the only diff between me and her is that i never found people who were willing to go on adventures with me let alone be my friend. The lines that Kanamori say at 2:13 stuck with me so much and Im scared that I wouldnt be able to make friends once i get out of an institution that forces us to work together.
