Gai Tihar - It is the morning of Laxmi Puja, the Newari "Festival of Light". The centre of Kathmandu is bustling with shoppers buying the essentials to clean and decorate their homes for Laxmi Puja, replacing utensils and furnishings and stocking up with auspicious food and gifts. The narrow streets are a chaotic fusion of pedestrians, motor bikes and market stalls, rich in colour, noise, and the smells of herbs and incense.
Six streets converge on Asan giving the square a perpetual bustle. The bazaar at Asan and the surounding streets attract
shoppers from all over Kathmandu because of the tremendous variety of merchandise sold here. Lying on one of the ancient India - Tibet trade routes, Asan has had a lively bazaar for centuries.
