When I was a school kid back in 2003, 4 sumo tournaments were aired on almost all TV channels in Mongolia. Seeing him enter the ring always used to give me that excitement, awe and pride. After school, my classmates and I used to draw a circle on snow to make a sumo ring and wrestle inside that. To make our game funnier we used to assign names of the sumotoris of that time to each other and imitate the likes of Takamisakari. And of course the winner always gets the name of Asashoryu.
@schnozz87 Жыл бұрын
The level of competition Asashoryu had and still took 25 titles is amazing. He was up against the likes of Hakuho, Harumafuji, Kakuryu, Kisenosato, Kotooshu, and the likes of Musashimaru in his early years. Prime Asashoryu vs the top rikishi of today would literally win every single tournament. Different level.
@nombregenerico8879 Жыл бұрын
What is crazy is that he won every single tournament even back then. Literally won all 6 basho of the year in 2004. And there was also Baruto, Kaio, Tochiazuma and the list goes on. Went against the last of the 90's and most of the modern golden era and still cleaned the house time and time again.

This win alone proves how Sumo wrestlers misjudged by wider audience that Sumo wrestlers are not athletes. This 140kg guy has far more flexibilty and reaction than any average guy. Asashoryu was truly a fearsome opponent on and off the ring. He was infamous in Sumo World. His stablemaster even failed to control his aggressive behaviour. So that is why he was forced to get reitred by Assocation. Due to his notorious wrestling techniques and his presence in the arena, he was indeed the most fan favourite.
