Pese is unique to Samoa: the clever use of the language with changed lyrics to a standard tune; the focused smiling group, with punctuated clapping, flamboyantly conducted by the fuataimi who also interprets with exaggerated actions and gestures and a large dose of clownish humour, to convey the message of whatever the theme of the day is. The acknowledgement of God starts off the proceedings while a receptive audience responds by clapping in appreciation for any good points made. Some fuataimi reach legendary status in Samoan society for their popular performances.
