An issue that I keep seeing is that we are getting the same TYPE of gun for the SAME element and nothing new for vacant slots. Like a 720-600 auto rifle for VOID. GOOD 140 Handcannons for VOID. SOLAR SMGS. Etc.

Yeah there are a lot of gaps, like how Sturm remains the ONLY 120 RPM exotic hand cannon, and there aren't ANY void or arc exotic hand cannons either. This also applies to a bunch of other weapon categories and of course to legendaries. People would still complain but at least it'd help with build crafting, like Verity's Brow for Warlock and stuff like that..

There are a multitude of reasons why every game thats has any sense of rng when it comes to collecting game pieces needs some that are purposefully worse than others. check out "when cards go bad" by mark rosewater its about mtg but you could pretend every time the word card is used replace it with gun.

The point about "PVP being the only place you can express yourself through weapon choice" is a really good one. I'm extremely average (at best) in PVP. My most used weapon is an auto rifle with Tap the Trigger and Ensemble - hardly a meta king, but it suits ME. Ensemble particularly was a damn game changer for me, the perk itself encouraging me to stick closer to teammates rather than lone wolf it all the time, forcing bad habits out of me by rewarding me for thinking more about the state of the battlefield. I've racked up more kills with it than any other weapon in PVP, and I'm genuinely a little proud of that. I'm not quite sure how you'd engender that kind of "this is my rifle, this is my gun" bond in PVE, given the dominance of builds and ability spam. Maybe mods that make weapon kills more integral to kick-starting or perpetuating builds? Aspects of fragments that are different depending on which weapon archetype is used?

I think weapon class-specific armors like peacekeepers, triton vice, or lucky pants fill that niche you're talking about, but the issue is that if you aren't playing the class those armors are on, you're a bit shit out of luck in that regard. It also makes the player wonder why only hunters get to have the lucky pants playstyle, as though there is something about the hunter class that makes hand cannons THEIR weapon and not warlocks or titans.

I really vibe with the sentiment on "guns should be fun to shoot"; I've done all endgame content and passed it all, from GM's to Day 1's to get the emblems - and unless I've been pushed into a corner, I always use what I find fun and best to use, within' reason. Ever since Blast Furnace I've loved Aggressive Pulse Rifles and ever since it was sunset, I've been chasing the new, better, 4-burst Pulse until it came out; Revision-0. I use it in GM's all the time, and people will say "Why not use Wish-Ender? It'll do the job better" (Necrochasm / Osteo argument) - I don't like using Wish-ender, but we're still clearing this GM in reasonable time. Similarly, I don't like waiting for Osteo's projectiles to travel for a kill, when I click an enemy I want it dead now not 1 second later when the needle flies across the map. I've used Aggressive Pulse Rifles since Black Armoury, and I'm still using them today, even when people say the TTK is bad. Why? Because it gets the job done for me. If I'm not playing a video game for fun, then why am I playing at all? People talk about how Destiny is a second job, then turn around and try min-max the hell out of everything, draining the fun from the game, then turn around and complain why would Bungie allow this. I'm having fun shooting my clacky gun in both PvE and PvP, that's enough for me. And one day, a new clacky gun will come out I will enjoy shooting, I will add it to my list of guns I will love to use. The issue may stem from community mindset having shifted in the past (5~15?) years in games though; No matter the game you play, people are always trying to Min-max everything. They always are trying to squeeze every competitive inch out of the game for whatever the reason, even when the only thing to fight is themselves having a good time.

It's super fun to find a gun you like and find it's niche. Pick an or weapon you think looks good or feels good, then make it work. You've touched on the issue I've had with Destiny 2 for a long time. The normal day-day PvE experience is so boring that it kills my desire to play the game. Once I've made a build I'm practically invincible, and while everything being GM difficulty would be bad for other reasons, having something to spice up gameplay would be phenomenal. The lucent hive kinda do this, and imo the Tormentors failed horribly at it (not to mention champions who are a joke anyways). Having an enemy that makes you have to focus is really cool, and breaks the monotony. But when the answer to all my builds is throw out more melees/grenades/class abilities I get bored fast

When I find a weapon that I really like I tend to stick to it unless I find something else that I like more. Its why I have only a handful of weapons with PvE kill counts in the 1,000s if not 10,000s, and a special few have passed the 100,000 mark *cough* Forbearance *cough* I have little incentive to play with other weapons.

@@Ninheldin the thing he is saying isn't that having favorite weapons is bad, he is saying that "why do we need more weapons when we already have plenty of weapons to choose from?" like he said, forbearance is so good because its a wave frame and has chain reaction (frankly i don't like the idea since it trivializes ad clear), so why get the new weapons that aren't as good, don't look as good and don't even give as much of an adrenaline rush as weapons like lets say sweet sorrow (one of my faves)?

the problem with forebearance to me is there is no point in running another wave frame unless it is as good and has another element that synergises better with the subclass i'm playing, it's for example why for void i use my god roll harsh language but for solar i don't use my wave frame at all cause it's simply not as good, this does also make wave frames kinda boring now since you already know that eventually bungie is gonna add in waveframes for other elements but they will be forced to have certain perks or nobody will play them

Make weapons that synergize with abilities, or even supers. Glaives are very fun to use with voidlock, and quicksilver is very good to use with strand (examples). If a gun is better because it has slightly better stats, its not fun, and it gets old. Hell look at Warframe, all of its weapons have unique abilities, like autos that can turn into a sniper, blades that can be thrown, or hell a giant ass scythe (more examples). Not saying destiny doesn't have that, but what I'm saying is destiny lacks uniqueness and creativeness. They have for the longest time, when it comes to weapons that aren't exotics. At least have legendaries do some cool stuff, like changing the function of the weapons into something completely different. For example, a good idea would be to add a void glaive, but with enough melee kills, it builds up a charge that can turn it into a cool looking void scythe(like the solar relic scythe that we use), that functions like a tormentors scythe. It can melee to extend a timer, and throw projectiles, as well as a suppression slam, but you wouldn't be able to grab people with it lmao. You would go from first person to third person to see all the action. It would be like a mini super. You could do the same the vog relic. Have a vex sword that turns into a shield when charged, and when you block, you negate any debuffs you may have on you, or any negative effects (minus raid debuffs), and you could attack with the shield. Just some wild ideas

The #1 reason i dont use trials weapons very much dispite playing a lot of it (i love trials for trials, sue me). My perfect 5/5 godroll messenger just will never be fun for me. Another example is perks. I recently crafted Chattering Bone, and while min maxing the shit out of it on d2foundry found that i could achieve a better stat split with keep away instead of rapid hit, a perk that i originally crafted on the weapon. I prefer rapid hit however, because its just more fun than keep away. Rapid hit requires i hit crits, something not hard to do, but its harder than just standing at a normal dueling distance. I have to work to make the weapon work for me. Keep away just does everything for me. Its why i like slideshot on shotguns more than opening shot-its more fun sliding at something than just shooting at it.

I think the subject of the intoxicating feeling of completed builds is the largest part of why new guns rarely matter. For example, I have a renewal grasp build that I have been perfecting ever since it came out and the only thing that has made me want to change that build or seek out new guns was when the new demo+headstone crucible smg came out. That said, people play differently, some only enjoy the game for the gunplay and enjoy that chase more than they do the buildcrafting side of things.

I agree with that, I don't like playing the meta, whatever the game may be. Apex Legends, I mained one of the worst legends. Destiny 2, I mained what people called the worst subclass, Stasis. Haven't switched off since. Mained Verglas in Legendary content and below and Wicked in Master and GM's. I just find the thrill of having to perfect and optimize the worst subclass for better performance more fun, makes you actually think about when to use your abilities and think about your playstyle and not just turn off your brain and rush in like a headless chicken like Arc Hunter, Hammer Titan or the more recent Banner of War builds. To each their own, I just have more fun being challenged that way.

Weapons and "God Roll" culture is one of the biggest contributers, which is further exacerbated by how long the weapons have been around (no sunsetting, must be powercrept over previous bis). "Quality over quantity" has another issue (besides powercrept): lack of weapons. Players will complain why we didn't get X number of guns compared to last release. Would like them to experiment more with checkmate-esk ideas for pve to find the balance of gunplay and abilities, as simple to advanced buildcrafting can significantly reduce cooldowns.

Key thing I believe about destiny 2 is this: What you take into most activities, doesn't really matter. How well you can survive does. (And light-level, but that is a bit irelevant) It's a matter of attrition, not gear. You will always be able to deal damage, and you will always be able to kill everything eventually. You can do a nightfall by playing safe and using cover effectively, hell some people probably beat it with at least 1 white weapon. The only times that gear MATTERS is with champions and day-1 raids. Champions because they are built for specifically that, and day-1 raids because you have limited tries and it's not easy enough yet. NEVER let someone say the gun you like is bad, they will always be wrong simply because they are not the one using it.

“there’s no reason to dismiss something for not being best in slot” except for the simple fact that item inventory is valuable. Vault space is limited to 600 items and if you have one of each exotic in your vault you are left with less than 400 slots for legendary weapons. When there are dozens of weapon families each with different frames and elemental affinities, running out of space is incredibly easy, not to mention those 120 new weapons every year.

A follow up on the God Roll Culture is that many endgame players will put their 3 weapon slots into specific roles. For the most part you want a primary to be efficient at ad clearing for example. Therefore it really narrows down your options to "best in slot" weapons for the ad clearing. This works the same for the special and heavy slot. The problem really lies in the Two tiers of difficulty department where Bungie has made many mid to end game content have a bunch of bullet sponges. Artificial difficulty is what I think is killing weapons in PVE. Raids are perfectly fine as the raid bosses we have been getting are quite the opposites to bullet sponges compared to former raid bosses where they are all stationary targets. But everything outside of raids and some dungeons are enemies that will just eat up ammo, and it becomes a straining effort to kill endgame mobs with a weapon thats not efficient at it. I do not think it is because of the ease of access to abilities either. Prime example is warframe where weapons still have a strong place in the game despite having some game breaking abilities that will 1 shot enemies up to level 999. TLDR; I blame artificial difficulty scaling.
@thealldayspecial
@thealldayspecial Жыл бұрын
Agree on artificial difficulty and lengthener padding. It's boring as hell when there's some "new way to play" whether it is from a new exotic combination, new weapon perks combo, whatever and it ultimately results in just playing with your food and making an engagement way too unnecessarily lengthy just for the sake of doing something "different". I get not everything needs to be sweaty and min/maxed but making a complete science project out of something isn't exactly a great sell when there's more efficient options to deal with the obstacle. Wicked Implement's freeze is a novelty and people hyping its anti-champ properties are kidding themselves when by the time you get a freeze off consistently and whittled down the health, you could've smoked it normally with just about anything else. As of now it really isn't a surprise why there is such a beeline to A. weapons with perk and energy combos that satisfy certain builds, and B. weapons the physically perform extraordinarily well in the PVE sandbox.

I started reading this ready to disagree but honestly, you’re right imo. I love dungeons and raids for that reason, I feel allowed to use what I want without that effecting the difficulty of the activity. Personally, I feel Destiny’s general activity difficulty is at its best when enemies deal high damage, but have lower health pools. I honestly loved the Craftening GM’s for that reason. You still had to use some amount of brain power to not die, but you could melt things. Granted that was obv extremely tuned up, but the concept remains. Now when I make loadouts it's about mods and the subclass stuff, for the most part i'm using 4 or 5 of the same guns all the time the only thing that might change is going from Calus Mini Tool to Ikelos SMG because of the damage type and Voltshot vs. Combustion.

Perfectly captured the situation. I think weapon should enable new ideas and subclass configuration should allow people to master that idea. Currently instead of making the weapon that branch out for new idea, we often get one that go deeper instead. So it boils down to, better Rampage, QuickDraw replacement, etc. I think this season has two interesting addition tho, the experimental munition and Heal Clip. Heal Clip lean into play style that allow you to regain health so you can be more reckless, ala Bonk Titan but much smaller scale. Experiment munition allows strategic location of where you kill the enemy to matter more. Its ability to link with Headstone and turn it to Dragonfly is also interesting.

I get the "meta" complaints from my guild mates when it comes to Hierarchy of Needs, a bow I have enjoyed using for this season. So much so that I have become a bit of a running joke within the group, but not in a bad way. The main complaints is "Wishender exists" and "it takes too much set up". Yet I can keep up in GM's with them. As I explained more than once, Hierarchy isn't a bad exotic, it's main issue is that it isn't a bow that as simple as Wishender or Trinity Ghoul. It is a valid exotic bow for PvE, as it shines in the ad clear department and can do enough damage to take out champs with its Guidance Ring within its duration. The catch is the perk, it requires you to be stationary and the tracking has a set distance. If you pair it with Sunbracers, you can lock down an area and give you some defense that can lessen the risk of you getting flanked while using the Guidance Ring. If you use Phoenix Protocol, then using Hierarchy's perk within a Well can recharge your super meter very quickly. It does not do as much constant damage as Wishender does in a GM, yes, but Hierarchy does a lot of burst damage that carries over to bosses and is much more fast paced between the two. Hierarchy is simply one of those exotics that needs certain builds to work and an understanding that not all weapons work the same way. It is a good exotic that is overshadowed by other exotics within its architype. If you are having fun using an exotic in endgame content and aren't falling behind, that should be the goal of the game.

I really get it, though it is also kind of the communities fault. Always chasing the perfect god roll and nothing else is even worth is is just dumb. Just because i have a 3/5 god roll or another gun i cant have fun with it. Destiny guns are about feel and I feel like that is what people are forgetting. I like playing a solar build that is only for support in terms of abilities. So I can focus on my favourite guns while supporting everyone else For example I really despise Osteo and Calus Mini Tool, as they feel awful to me. I'd rather use anything else I am having a blast playing like that. I really think we are just to strong in PvE. But it's always the same with every Meta, since the best is the best and the rest is not. That is how it's often seen and portrayed. I really dislike that mentality, but cannot really escape it either. You can just choose to focus on what you like more than what is the best. While I will mainly use what I need to complete bounties as efficiently as possible in core playlists, and whatever I feel like using otherwise since I don't do much endgame even though I'm capable, I enjoy using weapons for their own sake. With crafting + the recent changes they've made, I can get the patterns and not make them unless I need or want them right now, so I end up using my proven favorites and not necessarily what is the best, and that doesn't really ever affect me. I don't go for the most meta stuff, I just use what I find fun regardless. For the builds problem, I think if we had more expressions of ability power that weren't based on similar power but extremely short cooldowns, there would be a better balance. Let's say there were some exotics or aspects that set grenade abilities at a fixed cooldown time, but allow smart and precise usage to dramatically increase their damage. Think Verity's Brow but instead of granting ability energy it just granted more damage. This would be completely useless in low-tier content since enemies are far too weak right now, and maybe it would be a little overkill in mid-tier content too, but imagine being able to take off 3/4 of a champion's health with one grenade that's on a 1-minute cooldown. That doesn't really exist right now, and I think if more stuff went that direction it would make a meaningful choice in the sandbox. I would love to go for that stuff more as I don't really like spam builds that often, and spam builds aren't exactly viable in GMs as they require too specific of circumstances, so people opt for QSS or healing/invis builds to fill the gap. Hell, even the highest-damage ability builds we've seen historically have been from grenade, super, or melee attacks that get refunded instead of from the raw damage itself.

Regarding the Builds segment, I think we need more exotics like Gyfalcons. Gyrfalcons blends gunplay with your abilities perfectly because Void hunter is a utility first, explosions second subclass. Your power comes from both High uptime in your abilities that also grants a boost to your weapons. I think something similar could be done with arc warlocks by having an exotic boost your arc weapons when amplified like spawning lighting strikes on kill like that artifact perk from last season.

LFG listings these days are Well Warlock only, Banner of war only, omni hunter only. The community unknowingly admits that guns are no longer important by excluding classes and subclasses for the most meta and spamming builds for some classes. I ran GM this week on stasis hunter and arc hunter and did not do nearly as good as my omni hunter. I used that stasis exotic bow that can freeze ads but in GM it was really hard to proct its perk because things dont die as fast and it felt like it was too weak. where as my stasis nade was spammable and covered a lot of zone + freezing targets. I run raids pretty often too and DPS talks are lighter then I remember from years ago, it use to be "make sure you use (insert meta wep here)" and now its just use any rocket, use any sword, use any lin rifle. I get yelled at by my friends when I use off meta builds but no one says anything when I use off meta guns and its because they notice a performance difference in builds and see nothing of the guns.

Yeah I've definitely noticed this. I was pretty surprised how little Polaris Lance was recommended this week considering the solar surge and how many unstoppables there are in the GM. Such a fun weapon and it's utility is pretty good. But no one slaps it in their S tier rankings so no one uses it. So satisfying to get ignition chain reactions and clear entire fields of adds at once. And can actually stun both unstoppable and barrier (inconsistent on this one but still possible) as well as stagger bosses. But it's not S tier so it goes in the trash bin. 🚮

Weapons that synergize with builds are the ones you look for these days, whether its niche or not, there will be a reason to go after it to some degree. Case in point is the swordbreaker shotgun from Crotas end, the only weapon I care about or want from that raid, why? Because it's a lightweight 1-2 punch with an origin trait that synergizes with melee builds and procs pugilist on explosion kills, melee builds of which are quite strong atm. Same with some other guns, Unforgiven, best void SMG in the game with demo frenzy, perfect synergy with any void build you throw it onto with how prominent grenades are on void. Or briars from Ron, only linear to roll with surrounded which although is situational, can boost it to being worth using in some situations unlike most linears, it's solar which makes it very beneficial to run with surge mods and a full solar loadout, and it has an origin trait that can be very helpful. You get the jist, a weapon requires a niche, a use, for some piece of content or build in the game, if the gun isn't going to be a power creep for another weapon, give it a use and make it a specialist in one type of thing. So many weapons you can pass off these days as they don't fit a purpose because they aren't as good as something else, which can be solved by giving them perk rolls that work around what it's specialising in

I think this stems back from what Bungie said at a GDC. They have set up trains for the station, trains that have already been set up and ready for it to arrive well in advance of it actually arriving to said station. I like to think of it like a LetsGameItOut sim where Josh has set up so many trains and only one station and as a result everything is backed up and somehow cannot be changed since it is already on the tracks and on it's way to the congestion all the while he is working on setting up more new trains to head down to the station. One of the underlying issues right now is how Bungie can challenge us. This is inherently down to power creep, but the only way they are challenging us right now is either a: higher health targets or mob denisty. THat means you need to have weapons that can do aoe or have your build do it. For higher tier content you are often shoehorned into specific builds, be it wells, tether or banner of war. THat is one of the main reasons why Osteo Striga is so good, SMG's with subclass verbs and autos in general. You need to mow down stuff fast. I don't know if its winnable for Bungie right now, but if you slow the game down too much with fewer, but higher health enemies its too bulletspongy. If you increase the mob denisty but they die faster, you need to use aoe weapons or fast firing ones. THe last part of the "difficutly" spectrum is mechanics, but that doesnt help the weapon problem, so....

The problem that springs to mind (it might be me over thinking it) is besides the core playlists, world drops etc most of the weapons are behind a paywall if we had 2 or 3 good quality weapons that standout of the rest but are only accessible via the dungeon or the season is that worth spending $10 if it’s behind a dlc is that worth spending $50 for the base edition. Sure you can wait a year for the seasonal weapons to be sold by banshee but even then you still have to wait weeks if not months for him to sell that weapon and the roll you want with it (but I guess that’s where crafting can come in) and you can just buy the dlc if it’s on offer which would include the dungeons after year. But by then even better quality weapons might have appeared and knocked them off their throne or changes to the sandbox would have nerfed them.

I would prefer keeping some weird/interesting rolls but when I have to purge every few weeks I just don't have the energy to go through hundreds of drops to figure out what's worth keeping. So I end up doing #3, look for god rolls and drop entire gun groups because why bother.

For me, the biggest issues with weapons is the lack of interesting legendary frames. Every type is just the same gun that functions slightly differently. 600 vs 750 smgs don’t really feel any different. The best designed legendary weapon so far has been the BXR simply because it has an interesting frame and I wish that every frame had more unique aspects that separate them from just feeling like basic guns. For how fantastical and interesting Destiny can be, almost all legendary guns just feel basic, plain and boring, even with cool perks

How I view it is like this: in PvE, guns supplement your abilities, your matching subclass, while in pvp your abilities are meant to aid you so then you can finish the enemy off with your guns, or use them to try and survive a surprise attack by an enemy player, or if you have strand, use them as an escape option when you are being attacked by an enemy who is out of your effective range, or has close the gap on you.

I think warframe had the best strategy to deal with this very serious problem which is the Riven Mod system. Riven mod system Is simply a card with random rolls for random weapon In the game, the determines of these roll and Its numbers depends on how much players playing with this gun. If alot of people playing with let say "Sunshot", the roll will be very weak and almost not worthing sometimes to use riven mod slot in it. But If very few people play with "Sunshot" the rolls numbers will be crazy high..Like you can get a 450%damage with 120%Crit chance and 100% solar elements damage In the same mod!! and can reroll easy the mod. This system Imo Is simple and very genius, made any weapon In the game very good, interesting, very fun to play with, and explore hidden gum guns and swords..

This is a problem I've talked about with my close friend, who is the one who got me into Destiny 2 to begin with! I like gun play, Machine Guns and Auto-Rifles are my favorites with SMGs close behind because I love rapid fire bullet spray and I DO love chain reaction effects as well, its so satisfying. But as I mentioned to him, I often felt that the guns practically didnt matter, or to matter they HAD to have specific perks. He didnt see a problem with this, hes a Warlock main and is absolutely in love with the more ability looping focus in gameplay. And I am a Titan main who is sad that firing my weapon isnt a more meaningful aspect of my gameplay...or worse, that firing my weapon feels more like being punished for whiffing an ability, and the guns only purpose is to refill that ability's energy. That my Actium-Thunderlord build basically isnt allowed in raids, cuz im only ever gonna be allowed to use rockets for boss damage or the odd linear, but basically never a machine gun.

I feel like this issue is less pronounce on Hunter, since we only have a few ability spam builds. Arc melee (sometimes with invis), Solar knives and tripmines, and now the Strand Maelstrom thing. Prior to subclass 3.0, Hunters had like 2 options for healing and the 3 very restrictive weapon buffs (Tricksleeves, Bakris, Lucky Pants). That history may have cemented the Hunter identity and the class's reliance on weapons. I doubt that Bungie could bring the other classes down to that level, but it might be the most balanced

The biggest thing about god roll culture for me is perk viability. Some weapons I like to use are just because of fantastic base stats, but especially since Light 3.0, perks are just much more important to how good a weapon feels. Even if they might not be best in slot, having the subclass verbs play into them gives them that bit of additional impact (especially incandescent). Especially with raid weapons they did a great job at creating interesting combinations that do something unique and feel worth to grind for, and IMO there's still a lot of room left to explore archetype and perk combos, fill missing slots, etc. that make new weapons exciting without power creeping older options or feeling utterly useless if they don't. They just have to be really good at filling that niche, and IMO the niche doesn't need to be "highest dps / add clear in slot" to feel worth using if the combo is interesting enough. However, a lot of these weapons suffer from being only competitive with that combo - especially if it's a playlist or world drop with lots of perks to choose from. I feel like the number of available perks on a given weapon should be less and instead more impactful / identity defining for a weapon. The most recent good example of that is Showrunner for me, having Kinetic Tremors compensates for a worse stat package and gun feel compared to Submission and has become my new favorite kinetic 900 RPM SMG. But I still use Submission over it in casual content because it just feels so good.

I'm inclined to agree that guns just feel like the secondary option in PvE. I think the fight where I feel it the most in is the Ecthar fight in Ghosts of the Deep, because the mob density is downright unreal and weapons that aren't Osteo feel like they're trying to empty a sinking boat with a thimble, whereas a Solar Warlock with a Sunbracer build can not only clean the room but sterilize it and do massive boss damage with a Well and the Lament at the same time.

They seriously need to just buff all primaries majorly. The current meta is literally just to ignore primaries completely. In no world should double special be optimal.

I do think they should pull back a bit on mob density. I remember a time when the screen only occasionally broke out into a sesuire inducing light show. Also id love if enemies when back to spawning behind doors and then entering a room rather than just dropping in already shooting before they fully spawn. I hate the feeling of being suddenly surrounded in an area i cleared because i didnt have to foresight to know enemies were going to be dropped on top of me by the architects

Largely for me, honestly, it's just that I usually already have what I need. Barring an upgrade or a completely new perk/archetype, I probably have something that'll do the job. I really only play three subclasses on one class very heavily - Gunslinger, Nightstalker, and Threadrunner, and I have a few guns for each that just work really damn well, and a few more weapons that are just amazing generic slot fillers. I don't really need anything that doesn't have the same or better perks, because there are just a few incredibly synergistic perks available that push anything that doesn't have them completely out of the picture - incandescent, voltshot, chill clip, headstone, repulsor brace, etc.

I think having a lot of differen't weapons is a good thing, so when you finally unlock that roll you want for that one weapon after grinding for it, makes it an amazing feeling. AND THEN being able to throw it into the mist of whatever build your wanting to use it for makes it that much more satisfying. Lots of differen't weapons for everyone to play in completely differen't ways, and most people want to have as much as possible, and so they play with what is best for the quickest amount of fun possible with whatever time they have. I'm a sweet business main, I play it because it fun to go on kill chains, where everyone ego challenges me because they think - "OH I'll be the one to shut them down," and then they don't. It's all complete perspective and how you have "FUN" again with what little time you have.

Not interacting with the community is the easiest way to avoid feeling obligated to use certain weapons/builds. Literally just stop being socially pressured to play a video game the way you want. If you do not understand build-crafting enough to the point you have to look up videos to even play the game, maybe the game isn't for you, or the concept of learning new things need to be applied.

I think one problem is how enemies simply become tanky af to shoot with no real thought put into things like what kind of arenas are we fighting in, what types of enemies are being thrown at us, the enemy density, how capable are we to actually avoid or *gasp* parry enemy attacks, and so on. For the game to be a fun shooter there'd need to be some real thought put into the actual combat and how to make it engaging. People talk about Destiny's Gunplay like it's this holy sacred thing, but I would argue Witchfire does it way better, and is a far more satisfying game to play once you figure out how it all works.

Honestly this video feels perfectly timed. Just yesterday I finished remaking my builds and tuning things up, and only on like, 2 of the builds out of all 3 characters did I put on a Mod that helps with the control of the weapon or ammo reserves. Everything else was 100% Ability Focused. Also now that I think about it, everytime I would get a gun that felt right to me or it had a roll I found to be a good combo, some of my friends would say "But it isn't Meta/the god roll" and would then point out how "X and Y is a much better combo or this weapon is better". I still have weapons from Season Of Arrivals because I love the feel of them and they have just become a reliable weapon for me that I struggle to see a replacement for. Great video Nomad

If you've been at it for a while and have found the best equipment, more or less only the special combinations of the perks count for new weapons. For example, there is the Iron Banner bow with Dragonfly and Pugilist, which would be such a combo for special builds. Every now and then you replace a working weapon item with a better one if the dice luck wasn't so great before. But most of the space in the Vault is wasted with weapons that you had planned to try out at some point.

I've honestly been getting more and more into the pvp half of the game BECAUSE its the only place where my weapon choice actually feels like it matters, I still grab all my pve meta needs and mess around with my pve builds but when I'm chasing a weapon 9/10 times its for pvp now which feels weird as someone who used to chase specific pve rolls constantly. pve weapons even outside of dps scenarios feel more like a checklist than something you actually debate your choices on. I'm glad to see there are others who seem to feel this way too because on a lot of platforms it feels like people are extremely happy with the pve ability spamming guns come second sandbox we're in now. there's so much focus on builds now but it feels so few and far between for a build to have a weapon shooting focus there's like gyrfalcon hunter and necrotic strand warlock that feel built around augmenting their weapons and spending time shooting them and everything else feels like its made to spend the least time actually shooting in an fps, I feel like more options like these can really help this feeling and let people who want to shoot their guns and make personal choices lean into that for pve.

The moment I saw people writing off Showrunner because it lacked range despite it being the only gun we've had so far that can actually proc Kinetic Tremors before snagging a kill in PVP was the moment I realized that people really do just bury their heads in the sand when it comes to weapons.

every time me and my friends play pvp we spin a wheel for a random exotic armor piece and gun, we also let dim fill the rest of the weapons randomly. This has made me realize how many guns I dont give attention to that I would seriously enjoy if i actually tried.

This video is 10/10, I couldn't agree more. I'd also like to add in that with weapons becoming easier to use that the personal choices you made have all but gone. No more "but it sounds the best" or "it just feels the best to me". More like "Well this one has better stats and the best recoil pattern, so until something better comes along this is the only gun I care about". No more, "hey this drop looks cool, I'll try it for a few games". Unfortunately, that loop hasn't existed since D1.

My favorite builds have been the ones that strike a balance between gunplay and ability use like Starfire, this stasis build that got murdered by the mod rework, and a Briarbinds build I'm running now. These feel like they have a lot of moving parts and require me to engage with the game while I manage those. Right now I don't feel like my weapons are a part of the strongest builds I can play. Guns are just a backup to kill stuff if I mess up my ability loop, or deal boss damage. I'm not sure how to solve the issue, but I wish these more engaging ability builds were more potent in the current sandbox.

Another problem you don't state in this video but I think is important is the fact that the player cannot reasonably *keep* one copy of every weapon, or even multiple rolls they like of one weapon, because of limited Vault space. When I first started playing Destiny 2 back in Shadowkeep, I went into it with the same mindset that got me hooked on Warframe to this day - I saw hundreds of guns and dozens of characters, immediately said "I want ALL of these", and immediately set out to start collecting every Warframe and weapon - but a few years later, that's literally impossible. Even without counting the weapons I keep in my characters' mini-inventories at all times, my Vault, full of nothing but weapons and Exotic armor, with no duplicates, is at 450/600. Once upon a time, I also kept copies of Ghosts, Dropships and Sparrows I liked, but I literally ran out of space. Even though my Vault isn't full yet - and even half of 600 would be plenty of space - just the knowledge that there's a tangible limit on my storage that isn't going up with the game's weapon count is inherently discouraging. Eventually the game's weapon count will outpace both the Vault's space *and* the personal inventories of all 3 of your Guardians. There isn't much incentive to keep niche-but-fun rolls on weapons (which are the only rolls a handful of weapons have) knowing I eventually won't have a choice.

If Bungie doesn't make the next gun be better than the last, no one will bother getting it. So, Bungie makes the next gun more powerful, and leaves the others in the dust. Then, if you want to use anything other than the "god roll" gun, you'll get roasted because "the god roll gun does it better". It's an instance of power creep.

With how well received Checkmate has been, I almost wonder if there shouldn't be some kind of similar mode for PVE, something that increases ability cooldowns and damage in favor of gunplay, but for normal gameplay. Maybe a Master Patrols, or something. Locked light level like Neomuna, less ability spam potential, and a focus on your weapons, with patrol beacon completions being the only way to get heavy and possibly green ammo.

This is why I love the Crota weapons in particular. The majority of them are primary, and all of them feel spectacular. I use Abyss Defiant constantly now since I got it adept, and same with my adept Swordbreaker. Sure I got lucky, but even the base versions are unique. Swordbreaker is the only lightweight in the game that has Opening/Fragile, and I love it. Abyss Defiant is the only 360 with Zen Moment/Eye of the Storm. Can have absurdly high stats, and can have 100 Range with that. In PvE it gets Incandescent and Heal Clip which is crazy, let alone other combos for both that few or no other weapons of it's kind have. Oversoul Edict is the only 540 with Keep Away and Sword Logic, and all the Crota weapons are just out of this world. That's what we need more of. These are just examples, but each of the Crota weapons are unique and feel fantastic. More of that.
