Re: Fitter Happier- The whole album can almost be read as one big intrusive thought about the anxieties of modern life. We're not hunter gatherers anymore, so we have things like credit checks, and gyms and concerns about alcohol moderation. He's not saying those things are bad in and of themselves, but he's having a panic attack about the totality of all of those things combined. He's asking: is that all there is? Is there any more to life? To someone going through a dissociative, existential crisis, the idea that deriving meaning from working out or working hard to the benefit of people richer than yourself feels like a trap; another system of control. And again I'm not saying those things are bad in and of themselves. They're all necessary for modern living. The absurdity that they're necessary pursuits to begin with is what he's lamenting here, feeling like a pig in a cage on antibiotics; an unnatural compromise that ends in the same way for him or that pig. Dead in the ground, absent of any meaning.

Its interesting that your interpretation of No Surprises is the exact opposite of its meaning. The song's about the suffocating mundanity of a life devoid of passion, not the comfort of a middle-class existence. I wonder if this is because your generation see's that lifestyle as out of reach now, and so something to aspire to, whereas mine saw it as something to rebel against. Thank you for a great reaction.

I feel like making the connection to fitter happier is important in that sense. I see fitter happier as commentary on being a cog in the machine of the corporate world, hence the robotic voice, and the repetitive life devoid of unique experiences in late stage capitalism. And the overarching theme of people not fitting into this mold being cast aside as outcasts. Almost reaching a feeling of derealization, which all the lyrics about being alien or flying supports

Guys, I am 58 years old next Tuesday 20th August. I was around the first time OK Computer was published. I liked The Bends but it was almost by accident how I "got" OK Computer. I was at Glastonbury in 97 when Radiohead were headlining on the Pyramid Stage. The Crowd was blown away. Nobody, like you guys knew what the fuck we were seeing. The impact was so unique to any first listener, none of us in the audience had words to explain or comprehend the experience. It didn't matter, we went off in the night speechless. It was a wet weather torrential downpour but we were bullet proof after the performance, what happened that evening was enough to carry us back to our tents, stunned as though in some messianic trance like state. Nothing had ever existed in music history like it, nobody saw it coming, we were at a festival and we had known, The Bends for about 3 years by then so if we were anticipating anything, well in my case I was probably expecting a Bends heavy set list with a few new tracks from the new album. (The typical formula of so many Festival performances by most Bands with a new album to tour). Your readers may understand, but usually the new album tracks played at gigs don't hold the crowd's attention or get a huge amount of cheering at the end. The audiences always seem more comfortable with the stuff they know. This was, as you guys said, like being introduced to Heaven, I'd imagine with St Peter telling you at the pearly gates, "You've made it here, welcome, when you get in here, you are going to love it like nothing else you have ever experienced. You are blessed, now just enjoy"! After Glastonbury, still speechless, I came back to my earthly life, sad it had ended but I listened to OK Computer a thousand times like a Muslim kid at a madrasa learns the Q'rań off by heart, then sharing my OK Computer fetish by introducing everyone I knew to the album as religious, God bothering zealous unsolicited Jesus Freaks trying to spread their words of love, salvation and Christianity to save souls with a sincere conviction, whether their target wants to hear it or not. Radiohead have done a lot of good work since OKC and not been afraid to diversify their sound, yet still command the love and trust of their fans who tend not to prejudge or expect whatever is coming next. Thanks guys for a really enjoyable piece of entertainment, for me watching your reactions to a first time listen took me back to 1997 and purely because of the impact of it's first release and subsequent evolution it still happens to be my personal favourite Album they have made of all.

Funny that Lucky made you feel high, because it’s actually one of my favorite songs to do an acid trip to (together with Subterranean Homesick Alien and Everything In Its Right Place from Kid A). Agreed with some others. I think Climbing Up the Walls is about someone with a mental disorder. I am the key to the lock in your house That keeps your toys in the basement And if you get too far inside You'll only see my reflection The "house" could represent the mind, and the "key" could mean that the person feels that the disorder controls their life. Also worth to note is that it's spoken in first-person, so the person believes the disorder is alive. "Keeps the toys in the basement" could be an allusion to childhood, and how the disorder has effected the person throughout their life. The person is afraid to dwell too much on their mind, however, as they're not sure where the person ends and the illness begins: "and if you get too far inside/You'll only see my reflection". The person is possibly delusional. It's always best with the covers up The person is hiding under their bed sheets, or possibly closing the blinds; maybe both. Paranoia is another symptom. Alternatively, the cover could by their mental shields against the world to avoid getting hurt. I am the pick in the ice The person tried to live normally, but the stress of life gets to them, and the disorder only serves to make the crack longer. Do not cry out or hit the alarm The person feels that nothing can be done to stop the illness. Perhaps they have tried before with negative results. You know we're friends until we die The person has accepted that the disorder is a part of them forever. And either way you turn, I'll be there Either way could mean a variety of things, but since the song has a feeling of desperation to escape, I think the two choices are: a) Get help, but I'll still be there. b) Don't get help, but I'll still be there. Open up your skull, I'll be there The person has tried therapy or learned about and recognized the disorder within themselves. A step away from delusion. Climbing up the walls The person feels backed into a corner with no escape. It's always best when the light is off A step back. The person decides to just let the problem be (or "turn a blind eye" to the situation). It's always better on the outside The external world will take the person away from the pain for a moment (i.e. TV, junk food, games, sex) Fifteen blows to the back of your head A fear of unsafe psychiatric procedures is enhanced by the person's paranoia. Fifteen blows to your mind The person is finding it increasingly difficult to go on as they are. So lock the kids up safe tonight Paranoia again, or possibly OCD symptom of fear of harming others. Constant rechecking on kids. Shut the eyes in the cupboard Another line about ignoring the problem . I've got the smile of a local man The disorder has been with the person so long that they feel it is close to them. Who's got the loneliest feeling The closeness, however, is not good. The disorder prevents the person from fulfilling life to the full standard, leaving the person with a feeling of lonely emptiness. Just my interpretation, of course.

You are correct about Exit Music (For a film) - it was written for Romeo + Juliet. It was delivered late and nearly not used but they got it in - 7 weeks from the movie premiere. Which, in film terms, is very last minute. It's a reflection of the ending of the film where they both plan to run away but end up in a suicide pact - hence "we hope that you choke", as in: "look what you made us do with all your hate"

But I'm convinced no band has ever created an experience quite like radiohead. They have a cult following for a reason. Enjoy the journey with them. I'd say this is the "best" but in rainbows is my favorite.

Paranoid Android was on one of my favorite animes, Ergo Proxy. That is in when I first listen to Radiohead and at the time I didn't even know they were British, I assume it was a japanese band at first, hahahaha. Ergo Proxy is now a classic on the Sci-Fi Anime genre.

I was 26 when OK Computer came out in 1997 and it was unlike anything I'd ever heard at that point; they were way ahead of their time with this album. Hands-down the best album of the 90's as well as one of the greatest concept albums ever made. What they accomplish sonically with this album is amazing. Good to know that it not only stands the test of time but it's appeal (and the love for it) crosses multiple generations.

Alright I'm way late and prob shouldn't comment but kinda feel compelled. If I have to pick, I call OK Computer my favorite album and Lucky my favorite song. Really enjoyed you two getting lost in that one in particular. That final solo in Lucky does something bodily to me, it picks me up by my heart within my chest and lifts me to a higher plane of existence. "I felt like I was at peace, I felt like I was levitating" well said. This album makes you feel like you've risen above the chaos somehow.

Guys, thank you for sharing your experience with Ok Computer. I strongly advise that you listen to Radiohead down at the basement. I’ve been a fan for at least 25 years and I promise it will blow your minds 😊

Wait, "No Surprises" should be called bliss? Glad they love the song, but that is one interesting (to put it gently) interpretation.

In Fitter, Happier it wasn't a critique nor a promotion of these norms. Just facts. If you like it or not, it's up to you. It was more about how society expects you to be like it. You can't be deviant. In the lyrics Fitter happier changes to fitter healthier. The point of these norms isn't so that people stay happy but more so that they stay productive and "healthy" so they can serve the consumerist world of ours better I think.

I always took the lyrics of "Karma Police" to be anti mob mentality and how easy it is to get caught up in it. I hesitate to use "cancel culture" cos i know some dweebs will (ironically) get angry and defensive if I dare suggest that it's a bad thing but hey

On Electioneering I'm surprised no one has really picked up on the "i go forwards, you go backwards, and somewhere we will meet" line. I agree with most that the politician is going forwards, and the general public is goin backwards in many aspects. But the "somewhere we will meet" I think has to do with neo-conservative "trickle down" economics, also called "voodoo economics" (also mentioned the song). For those who don't know, "trickle down" economics are generally defined by large tax cuts for the rich and the overall "purging" of big government spending. The idea behind this, in the simplest terms, is that tax cuts for the upper brackets helps to stimulate the economy, which eventually "trickles down" to the lower classes through state-wide prosperity. These Supply-side economics were championed by the Reagan government during the 1980s, and duplicated by similar thinking governments around the world including Margaret Thatcher's Tories in the UK. Many opponents argue that the "trickle down" is never felt in the lower brackets and although the economy may recover and thrive, the majority of citizens see no real prosperity, and are instead faced with rising cost of living and lack of government-sponsored social programs due to the massive trimming of the bureaucracy. I believe the the "somewhere we will meet" line refers to the idea trumpeted by conservative politicians who promise voters that they will eventually meet each other in terms of prosperity, even though the whole idea of one person going forwards and the other going backwards and eventually meeting is far-fetched. This is the metaphor for Radiohead's opinion of "trickle-down" economics.

Boys, just found your channel it’s so good to see a younger generation enjoying music from a previous era. I see you’ve done all Radiohead albums so far, you will fucking die when you get to In Rainbows…it’s phenomenal. If you want some album recommendations I think you will enjoy: Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium JPEGMAFIA - Scaring the Hoes Alien Ant Farm - Anthology Clark - Totems Flare Muse - Origin of Symmetry Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication And a couple of ‘out there’ albums, might not be your bag but the two albums that changed the way I think about music: Aphex Twin - Drugqs John Frusciante - Niandra Lades and Usually Just a Tshirt Cheers!
