Thank you for sharing this with me. I'm a gay man and was raised in a Mexican, catholic household. I experienced trauma as a child and was always told that being gay was wrong. My parents would tell me that being gay would be a sure way too be condemned too hell. A couple of years ago, I would attend SAA meetings because I thought I had a sexual addiction. But, like the young man you mentioned, I also had that yearning to be loved and accepted by a father. My father was absent for most of my life. He would provide for the home, but, he never truly spent time with me. So, I felt very neglected. He divorced my mother 2 years ago and has abandoned the household. Thank you SO MUCH for posting this. As a middle school theology teacher I've become convinced that this is the number one misunderstood issue for teenagers today and one that holds many of them back from ever fully embracing their faith. As Jason references, most young people today have been brought up thinking there are only two sides to this issue: "Gay pride" or "gay shame". The third, Catholic way, has never been presented to them, especially in such a respectful and loving manner as in this video. I’m sure there’ll be some kickback, but I am also sure those who actually watch the entirety of this clip with an open mind and heart will be richly blessed. May God bless all who watch this video, all who experience same-sex attraction, and especially all who have ever been hurt by members of the Church. Do you know why the catholic way of abstinence isn't really followed by many people? its because human sexuality is basically something we can't run away from or pray away. What would be better if priests (and specifically bishops/cardinals) got their collective heads out of their behinds and realize that God isn't offended by how we have sex. (he lets kids be bombed by asshole presidents/dictators around the world but cares how two people have sex? what kind of sick pervert is God? ) But in 100% seriousness bishops and cardinals alike need to be against these cannon laws (109.1, 226.1-2, and 1061.1) and change them to allow for gays to be married or not claim that BECAUSE they can't have children its "a sin". These types of official paperwork allow for bigots to continue being bigots in our church.
@jamz32437 жыл бұрын
Seriously as a theology teacher I am eager to learn how dictators who harm children, murders, etc. are equal to two happy people (of the same sex) who decide to play a little naked wrestling in bed. (or you know wherever appropriate) I mean you can make the argument dictators and murders are similar to spousal abusers and thieves but you can't even compare thieves and robbers to gay people who actually love one another. (no not being able to have kids is not stealing or killing anyone because your sperm and or eggs are not alive) Or rather your sperm and eggs are not alive UNLESS you believe that one part of the gospel where Jesus says that "God can make men/sons of abraham of these stone" and you also respect every pebble you step on. I know. I know, I've already had a very lengthy discussion with quiet a few theologians about "pro life" and while I disagree, there is an argument to be made for that.... but there isn't one for gays being sinners.

Amiii, you're breaking my heart. You're young, and you're earnest, but just like you said--you're on the verge of missing out on what life has to offer. It's so tough to read a story like yours. I hope you'll hear me out. People like the man in this video and in this comment section are genuinely well-meaning, good people. And that's great. It's awesome to be supported. It's awesome to be part of something larger than yourself. And it's even more awesome to be supported by those who share your belief in that larger thing. I'm sure you feel a sense of warmth, love, and belonging when you hear a genuinely caring man affirm your humanity like this. But there's something else going on here. Something insidious. The ideas put forward in this video are crafted to accomplish two things. First, the video aims to educate people about the doctrinal reasons the Catholic Church rejects homosexual behavior. Indeed, homosexuality and Catholicism don't get along very well ideologically. In the past, things were much uglier and much more hateful. There has been improvement in the church, and this video is evidence of that improvement. Thank goodness for that. Secondly, once its made the case, the video aims to then combat homosexuality with quite a bit of careful rhetoric that makes it appear that gay and lesbian Christians are actually accepted by the church. All you have to do, you're told, is embrace your homosexuality but deny the homosexual behavior. You're told that abstinence is not a denial of your identity because sexual preference isn't a part of your identity--only godliness is. You're told that gay marriage is not about inequality, but about a misunderstanding of terminology. You are made to believe that since kind, thoughtful people like this man will always accept you, that you must believe them when they tell you to deny your immoral urges and proclivities. All of this advice probably comes across to you as another instance of the same support and concern you've always felt from this community. You are supposed to feel accepted--not pushed away. All you have to do is suppress, and that acceptance will continue. Amiii, leave this community of believers. Find people who will not make your decision to remain abstinent a barrier to entry. Find people who encourage you to embark on a journey of self-discovery in which you arrive at your own decisions by your own means. Find people who will not steer you away from life choices unless those choices are infringing on the free choices of others. Find people who will not only accept who you are spiritually, but who will celebrate ALL aspects of your identity, including your sexuality, your religion, your passions and interests, and whatever else YOU choose. Life is short, and being human is too beautifully complex to deny such large aspects of your experience as your sexuality. You yourself sense that you might be missing out. You're still young--there's still time to change. Please venture beyond this corner of the internet. You will find other communities of support--heck, you will find thousands of gay and lesbian Christians who are not commanded to suppress their sexualities. In their denominations, they are just accepted for who they are! Really, all I want is for people like you to not fall for this rhetoric. It's appealing, and it's convincing, but it isn't healthy. Your life experience will be so much fuller if you branch out, even just a little bit. Best of luck, Amiii. I hope you don't find the extensive life advice of a random internet commenter too off-putting :)

I had a conversation almost exactly like this with my mom just the other day when discussing the state of our culture. Thank you so much for wonderfully summing up these beautiful truths. I myself was once caught up in all the confusion and identities for many years in middle and high school, yet still considering myself Catholic, until about two years ago when I came to understand the fullness of God's word and intentions for our lives. My struggle now is in how to share this truth and love with others I helped lead astray. While I am a little afraid of the inevitable conflict from some, which I have already faced a little bit, I am reminded of a priest I once read about who said "It's my job to be countercultural." All Christians are called to this because Jesus Christ himself is countercultural (despite whatever claims some might make about "Western" society). How much more countercultural can it be to understand love as holy and love as suffering and love as SELFless. When there is self, there is identity and image. Without the self, there is only God and love for each other so great that it extends beyond this world and this life time. I hope all of us can love so boldly and show to the world what love truly is.

I know this might cause a little backlash from some people (not all of course!), but I'm a gay atheist, and I still appreciated this video more than I can express. I appreciate the goal of normalizing opens of sexuality as well as the importance of ALL KINDS of relationships: from friendships to romantic relationships to accountability partners. The way you feel is not always in your control, but the way you react to those feelings and your circumstance is. I deeply appreciate the love you spread over hatred. Despite our differences, I love you all as well, even if our viewpoints are different, and I hope you know that as an atheist, I am not evil, and I don't have an empty life without purpose or goodness or love. I am driven and happy and full of love to spread, and I believe that life is not about me but about coming together to spread hope, joy, love, and peace for all. I know others believe in a different purpose for why we are here, and I completely respect that! I embrace people of all kinds, and I do my best to love unconditionally and live intentionally to make the most of this life spreading the most positivity and good that I possibly can. Whoever you are and wherever you are in your life, you are beautiful, supported, loved, and you can do this! We are all in this life together, so lets help each other along the way! Much love to you all!

I'm not sure where you got any of that in the video. Nowhere in Church doctrine does it say a single thing about accepting any form of sexuality other than heterosexual behaviour in the confines of marriage. The RCC is NOT open to allowing say the behaviour you choose to indulge in. You may take what I'm saying as unkind or mean but what you got from this video wasn't really what the Church teaches. Yes we love you regardless but we do not accept the life you're living and pray for you to repent. No one of any amount of Faith will say that any form of sexual act outside of a man and woman in marriage is ok.

BornAgain happyfriday Really? Sort of interesting that you'd think that, because I'm Catholic and I don't think you can work your way into heaven. You know, when Paul mentions works in the Bible, he's not referring to good deeds we do to glorify God, he's talking about the works of the Jewish faith, that is, things such as circumcision and other Jewish mandates that were thought to be necessary for salvation. The works of the Jewish faith aren't necessary for salvation, that's what the passage means. I don't think your really understanding it, your just reading it aloud without much context.
@mjanczakowski7 жыл бұрын
BornAgain happyfriday Indeed it is ultimately God's grace alone that saves us. However, it is that same faith that compels us into action. For example, in the case of the thief on the cross, the man surely had faith, but this faith compels him to take action - to ask Jesus for forgiveness. If he doesn't do that, it makes us question the rigor of that faith. Thus, salvation comes from faith and works by virtue of the fact that true faith demands action.

BornAgain happyfriday - don't ever tell me that I'm not a Christian because of my sin. Did you listen to the video? As I stated, I'm attracted to men, I never said that I engage in the activity. Even if I did, I still accept Jesus as my Lord and savior so yes I am most certainly a Christian. If you have a problem with that then that's your problem. Take your self-righteous nonsense and shove it up your arse.

What "truth" was provided by this video?
@theohoelker7333 жыл бұрын
I saw a lot of truth in this video. First, he made a lot of important clarifications about what the Church says on marriage and homosexuality, many of which are ignored or not known by many people; second, he showed that there are more options than the world says there are for those with homosexual desires, namely that they can acknowledge their desires, realize that their desires do not come from their own choices, and take up their cross of having to deal with those desires, which is truly difficult. Third, and probably the most important, is that he, along with God and the Church, love all men and women, regardless of their desires. God made us all in His image and likeness, and desires for us all to be with Him in heaven forever; in His love for us, he has given us the ability to make our own decisions, and shows us that we ought to make our decisions out of love as well.
