ASD and VSD are congenital heart diseases seen in children since birth. Dr Akhlaque Ahmed, Consultant in Interventional Cardiology at Narayana Hospital - Brahmananda, Jamshedpur, discussed ASD (Atrial Septal Defect) and VSD (Ventricular Septal Defect).
What are ASD and VSD?
ASD - Atrial Septal Defect
The atrial septum is a wall that separates the two upper chambers (atria) of the heart: the left atrium and the right atrium. ASDs typically occur during foetal development when the septum between the heart's upper chambers fails to close properly.
VSD - Ventricular Septal Defect
The ventral septum is a muscular wall separating the heart's two lower chambers (ventricles): the left and right. Ventricular septal defects (VSDs) occur in children due to incomplete closure of the wall between the heart's lower chambers (ventricles) during foetal development.
ASD and VSD may not significantly harm children if they are small in size. However, larger defects can lead to difficulties in feeding, particularly with milk intake. Advanced devices utilising narrow wires can effectively close these defects with precision in early childhood, reducing potential impacts on heart function.
VSD closure is important during early childhood, while ASD closure can be performed before the age of 20. It's important not to fear these conditions but rather seek appropriate treatment for your child.
