And Now An Attempt to Get Dressed - ACL Journey -

First week out of surgery and it was not an easy one. Roller coaster of emotions. Visiting two different PT places trying to find the right home for my rehab the next 9 months. But all in all learning to celebrate the little wins this week.
Background: In November 2023 I was fighting for Team USA in Paralympic Judo in Santiago, Chile. This was the ParaPan American Games. It happens once every 4 years and is a big qualifier for the Paralympics. In the match that would award me a bronze medal it happened... I planted my foot and completely torn my right ACL. This injury ended my Road to Paris 2024. I was heartbroken but I am here to share my journey for myself and for others going through anything similar. It's a long road but I know I got this. Despite a lifetime of adversity, a blind high school wrestler attempts to win a New Jersey State Championship before the end of his senior year. Anthony Ferraro has always tried to live a normal life. As he entered junior high, Anthony decided to try his luck at wrestling. After a dismal first season, he begged his father to enroll him in a wrestling club. His father obliged and found a coach willing to teach a blind kid to wrestle. The following year, despite his obvious disadvantage, Anthony went 24-1. Three years later, Anthony has set a number of goals for himself; to become the first three-time District Champ in his school's history, break the school record for most wins, and become the first blind state champion in New Jersey wrestling history. The question is, does he have a shot in the dark?

When you said “living in the pain” because you don’t have visual distractions, that part made me emotional 🥺 this is such a tough road you’re on, thank you for being vulnerable and sharing all of the ups and downs with us. As a physical therapist, I know the journey is tough! Finding the right PT that matches the vibe check is important! ACLRs turn out very well, especially the graft they used for ya!! It just takes alot of patience and diligence!! All the things you are feeling are VERY NORMAL!! You are completely justified to feel the way you feel, it's a huge procedure with alot of emotions that surround it!! You have the right mindset, man! One love, man!

Man, watching this gives me flashbacks. 2x ACL/MCL recons. Once that femoral nerve block wore off, I had to take vicodin like tic tacs just to have any kind of relief. I would say to take PT very serious and continue with similar exercises for the rest of your life to ensure the muscles around your knee are strong so they can stabilize it. I wonder if they have you in a CPM device during the day as that helped my second recovery go a lot smoother. Not sure if I missed it but did you you use your own graft or a cadaver graft for the replacement? Best wishes for your recovery.

You're right, it will take a while. But, after that you get to live the rest of your life being able to use it all you want to. So, that's incredible. I went to the Doc the other day and also shed a couple of tears (just due to my depression/anxiety). Sometimes it's a good release. Hang in there man.

I had shoulder replacement last summer. They gave me a nerve block too. It doesn't feel good when it wears off. Just use the pain meds....you'll feel much better in another 2 to 3 days. Your PT won't mess with you, beyond what you can handle. PT takes forever.

Oh, Anthony! The cure feels as bad as the injury, seems like. I am so happy you met someonewho recovered from ACL repair surgery. One love!. It's most helpful to have someone who's been through it and is doing fine, to encourage you in your recovery! Props to Kelly, your sweet and resourceful wife and most excellent caregiver during this process. You two are so good together, it warms my heart. Please give yourself leeway to skip a day filming even these little clips while you recover if it will help you get rested and get better.
