thanks for having the courage to upload this video. Good education for other gliders with engine on board. To all the blabla people here commenting bad on this video: Go home and play with your RC planes.

Your last sentence in the comment was as unnecessary as this accident. It´s the pilot´s responsibility to think in advance and to use the engine at the height (and over the terrain) you still can outland, not to sink it into a village and then be surprised. Nice, that he posted it, but otherwise totally avoidable accident. Sure any of us can got into a trouble any day, especially at the competitions, but still we have to do our best and try to avoid the bad decisions!

I once spent an evening spellbound by the recollections of one of the greatest glider pilots ever. He told a graphic tale of a desperate attempt to start the engine as he descended towards an unlandable area, only being successful in the very last few seconds. It seemed to me then, as it does now, that glider pilots would not paint themselves into such a corner without a back-up, so they lull themselves into a false sense of security. Similarly, I have shared numerous thermals with other gliders in complete safety, but once flew with a very good but aggressive pilot in a thermal where the other machines were coming far too close for comfort. His response to my concern was '...that is why you wear a parachute...'. Just food for thought.....

Short translation: the pilot met a strong ascending airflow (6 - 8 m/s, around 1500ft/min?) and lost the most of the control of his plane. The motor did not start. He aimed for the fields you have noticed but was not able to glide there. He also mentions that he dumped or had earlier dumped the water and hit a power line before crash. So, I am not glider pilot, but it looks like a typical aviation accident: a sum of several reasons. All of them could be handled if met one by one.

If afterwards you can't use the glider anymore, it is not actually an outlanding, but a simply a crash ...

This is not an outlanding! it's a crash landing. There's a subtile difference in that the ASG glider is wrecked. Hope the pilot is okay

Why on earth did he not land into the long field on the other side of the river? That's the trouble with relying on engines: If he did not have one, he would (hopefully) have chosen a field much earlier.

if I crash a sophisticated glider like this one, I don't stand around discussing all the details with the media; and looking like I can afford to buy a new one tomorrow !! Instead I look like I'm stupid, pick up all the pieces , and try and vacate the scene as best I can

So why did he land in the garden when there were large open areas of grass either side of it?

Deploying the engine adds a lot of drag. This is the paradox of. motor glider: if the engine doesn’t start, now you’re REALLY coming down, therefore the engine start needs to happen be in plenty of time to safely continue the landing without power. Also, this glider has an 18m (60 ft) wingspan, so lateral clearance is important. this makes most roads unsuitable due to numerous poles and markers along the road that can’t be seen from the air.
@kolbenfresser9108
@kolbenfresser9108 2 жыл бұрын
Everything you mentioned is correct and i would like to add that an engine makes the glider heavier, resulting in more energy carried when flying with the same speed as a glider without engine. Usually the speed has to be even higher because of the heavier plane, resulting in even more energy. Because of this noticeable difference in Energy, you need a significantly longer Paddock than without the engine.

Some people have more money than brains. He tried to start the engine too late and did not put emphasis on flying and landing the glider. The glider was worth about $200k before the incident.

Herbert, I disagree. I am sure such stupid mistakes can happen to anyone. I own a self launcher and in competitions you will never use the engine if you have any chance to find a thermal, so you will maybe start it in 200m AGL (yes, I know its wrong but thats the way reality plays in competitions). So the workload is extreme in the case the engine does not start. You can see in the film, that Jari even tried to retract the engine again as far as he could to increase is glide angle but obviously, he also hit a strong sink. The bottom line is, that douzens of pilot died in circumstances where you could always say afterwards: He should have done this or that and then he would be fine. Most of them where pilots with tons of experience like Holighaus, Reichmann etc. and it was all simple pilot error. How many pilots died in the Alpes because the hit the mountains ? Would it not be so easy to simply stay further away and maybe accept 0.5m/s less updraft ? If you want to be fast you have to increase risc. Increasing skills are not used to fly safer, but to fly faster. Its really funny if some people here check google earth and think they know where they would have put the plane down.

LSVFlachkurbler I fly gliders without engine, but pilots who fly the ASG 29 and people with self launchers have explained it to me this way: You can use the engine in low altitude, but you ALWAYS need a field for an outlanding in case the engine don't work. And those people win competitions without risking their lives more than neccecary. Everyone makes mistakes, but if you do the same mistake twice or risk a crash on purpose, you're just a bad pilot.
