the asg is not a classic automatik, the torque converter is, easy to remember: Classic automatic: No clutch (instead a torque converter) ASG: Automated manual pretty mutch (1 clutch) DSG: Dual clutch automatic

The ASG is basically a manual gearbox, which is automatted by some additional parts. A manual gearbox doesn't have a parking gear. So they weren't able to put one in with ASG. That kind of automated manual gearboxes usually are built into very small and cheap cars to hold down their prices.

@Gibbon It costs about 350-500 euros extra to replace an ASG compared to a manual transmission. It's really cheap.

I have an ASG it's also called AMT just put it in Manual Drive mode and select a gear that is 1 or 2 and then turn off the engine of course you keep your brakes engaged at all times till the engine is running. That's park for theses cars its simple. No even if you don't use handbrake its okay. But i still use both. I hope this helps

If you park on a slope, can you just put the transmission to R and apply the e-brake?? In this case, if the e-brake down then the car will not slide down the slope

Actually, you should park with the lever in D or R and start it in N (according to the manual). This is because D will act like a Park (same as in older BMW M-classes), so if you put the parking brake down, your car won't roll. It's the same as leaving a manual car in gear. Other than that it's just a crappy gearbox. Clunks every now and then when you put it in reverse, shifts at the worst possible times to save fuel (not ideal because it's a 3 cylinder with not too much power, so you wanna keep the revs high enough) and, unlike some (very few) single-clutch automatics, it doesn't creep when you release the brake. Every gearshift is extremely noticable and it's honestly much worse than Fiat's Dualogic. Stick to a dual clutch if you want an automated manual, but I much prefer a good old torque converter... :/

this gearbox is basicaly the same as the one on the 451 smart fortwo, a manual controlled by a computer. Loves to go up to higher gears but a bit slow sometimes to change down so u end up doing 30mph in 5th lol, i dunno if the shifts are faster in the asg cuz there pretty slow in the smart

@@cypriotflare yes im refering to the mk1 smart witch had a 6 speed auto manual and the mk2 smart had a 5 speed auto manual, the mk3 and current has a twin clutch auto

Hi! I'm planning to get the VW up as my learner / first car, probably the 2014 model. May I ask, with the ASG... When going a steep downhill and I decided to shift to manual, I assume the engine break works fine? Have you any problem with it? Lastly, I have driven automatic cars before but always have used the drive (D) option, haven't tried the manual shifting option. If I decide to shift to manual for more power or for engine break purposes... When shifting gears, do I need to 'let go / ease off" the accelerator while changing gears? Or can I shift gears without having to take my foot off the gas ? Thanks in advance!

I have a 2017 UP!, downhill just let it in D (never do it in N) and the engine break will work just fine. I never shift manually, to overtake someone just take your feet from the accelerator and them floor it, the car does the rest 😉

In the wintertime using your parking is very dangerous. Your parking brake will freeze. So you get stuck.Why they do not use a “P” in their gearboxes? I already own a vw up with a asg gearbox. Bought the car new and after 3 years the gearbox is dead. Repair costs of the asg computer 400 euros here in the Netherlands. Luckily I bought extra warranty of 3 years so I had not pay the bill myself. So a good advice to everyone do not buy a vw up especially with a asg gearbox!

Actually when you park you put it in REVERSE and pull up the parking brake!!!

I have a 2013 Citigo with the ASG gearbox. Most of the time it is fine. However if you are on the open road on hilly terrain and tight corners it gets very very confused. The worst thing about this gearbox is even if you flick the gears manually it will override you after a short time. Therefore sometimes when you flick it into, say third gear, it may decide to go back to fourth. You then flick it back and instead it decides to go to second gear. Resulting in it reving the s##t out of itself and achieving nothing. The,car itself is brilliant. The ASG is not! Either I would prefer a manual gearbox in traffic or on the open road, or I would rather walk. The only thing letting the Citigo/Up/Seat down is this argumentative gearbox. If,you are anything other than a complete Nana driver, avoid it.

DO NOT GET AN AUTOMATIC UP. get an automatic hyundai i10, absolute beauty to drive and a proper automatic torque converter. You will never role back and the shifting is seamless unless above 40 mph

VW Up automatic is great city car and very quiet inside. Automatic is great and in D car dont move sliggty forward you must press gas pedal to go.

So it's actually dangerous if sold as automatic to a person who has had their lessons in an automatic as it's actually a semi automatic car!

Nope. I've had it on my 2001 VW Lupo, then on the 2012 Up! and now on the 2019 Up!. Never had problems. It's as reliable as a manual transmission.

@@ahmedamr2515 You're welcome! Changing the clutch costs the same as changing the clutch on a manual 5 speed gearbox. It's basically a manual gearbox with a 400-500 euros robot that changes the gears for you.
