Ash Cakes -Primitive Bread Baking-

This is a method of baking bread using only the coals and ash of a campfire. This primitive cooking technique has been used for thousands of years across many cultures to make bread without the use of an oven.
The breads baked in this video are modern options, though primitive flours and home-ground meals can also be baked in this way. Whether it is being used for survival or as a quick and easy way to have bread out on the trail, cooking bread in the ash and coals of a fire is a great method and skill to have.
Ash Cakes, Ash Bread, Fire Bread, Indian Bread.

Hey Group, This is a video that was requested by a subscriber. Though the flour/mix is.not a primitive recepie, the cooking method is an incredibly useful skill. A primitive bread video should be done in the next month(yucca bread). The Dr. appointment had mixed news. My vision has gotten darker this past week, sunlight is brighter for some reason as well. The retina appears to be stabilizing and they are hopeful, but a cataract is growing and a lenses replacement will be something in my future. The right eye will not get better, but one half functional eye with oil in it is what I have to work with and it will be enough. Tell me what you think about the vid. Have any requests or ideas? The temps for cooking videos will last through January... it's still in the high 80s,. Thank y'all for watching, sharing, and above all else caring after my health and families well being. I'll keep working at getting better, there's no other option. -Bob Hansler

Awesome video Bob. I've done bannock bread over a fire and baking powder biscuits on a hot rock but never ash cakes..... Just as an aside.....Ashes from the fire actually make the nutrients in the corn more digestible. Back in the day people that relied heavily on corn in their diets got a disease called Pellagra. It was a pretty nasty disease and very prevalent in the Southern states of the US due to economic issues that affected diet. The peoples of South America and the Native Americans of the Southwest discovered centuries ago that by introducing lime, wood ash or other alkalies into the corn during processing that the disease was prevented. Just a handy fact in case you are a prepper and are corn reliant or you just like to gather trivia to bore people to death.

One of those lessons that has stayed with me from many biology courses. It is the defeciency of.niacin and is why white bread eventually had to be re-enriched. You can find enough niacin in a variety of foods, even raw meat will get you there in a bind. Another good reason to diversify your diet as much as possible. Pellegra was crazy.... literally.

Never seen this done with bread, so cool! Not many people realize that ash was added to many foods like corn to help break it down and add nutrition, so it's a great by-add to the bread. Well done Bob!

@@symmetrytanner5156 Animals are smart. Who does the labor of getting the food and preparing it? All they do is eat it! Or not. And who has to work to pay the mortgage so they have a roof over their heads? Or provides the heat so they can stay warm? Talk about training us! I have to say, though, that cats can bring home the mice, if you're into that. And I knew a dog who brought home a steak from someone's grill. Never did find out who it belonged to. (No, it was not my dog. I understand the steak was very good.)

A fun little side note, the ash on the cakes is actually quite helpful for your digestive system and you can barely taste it. It's actually been used as a leavening agent in ancient Native American recipes, and the Romans used it as well (mixing it in with their salt to extend its lifespan). So for anyone concerned about eating (pure) wood ash, there you go. Not only is it harmless, but it's also beneficial. Especially in a survival situation where you'd be after any source of minerals you can get.

Im a guy from the tiny scattered islands of Maldives. You might have heard of it. But i highly doubt you would have. Cause its so tiny. And most of the time ud have zoom in on to just see the islands. And for an island guy like myself, we never saw mountains, lakes or creeks. We just have lots of sea surrounding us and a few mangroves. But ever since a kid, after watching so many cowboy and american cultural movies, i actually grew so fond of habitats like where you hang around. It would be a dream coming true to live a life such as that. So just felt the need to tell you that. Because by showing us those videos of how to survive in the wild, it almosts feels like living with you after watchin them all. I wish ud come down here to our country, and make some videos to survibe in the uninhabited islands. The wild side of island life.

LOL!! 8 min in and just remembered how to use gloves! :)) Puebloan Native American women deliberately use 4-wing salt bush ASHES in their cooking. Fire kills any germs. And the ashes provide needed salt and minerals. Very healthy for you. Also adds a WONDERFUL smokey flavor in soups and stews. It is called culinary ash. This was a GREAT demonstration. TX!!

One of the things (few things) (VERY few things) That I like about the internet is the ability to share information like this. I appreciate the outdoor, prepper, survival, bushcraft, woodsrunnin' videos a lot and have learned a lot from them even though I've been stompin' the woods for over fifty years. You can teach an old dog new tricks as long as the dog isn't too proud to be willing to learn...even from a 'pup' ;)
