That's a fun song. And it was a fun shooting as well, I played the little girl's father. It was shot at Sony Studios in NYC.

This is really great, not to mention that I'm on the video as well - as the little girl's father :-) We shot this in 96, at Sony studios on NYC. Years later, the director Jesse Peretz did the "Learning to Fly" video from the Foo Fighters, really good as well. Lots of fun, good memories from it. Jesse, if you're reading this, you're "The man". Thanks for this. Cheers Fernando

This reminds me of some half hour program I saw a long time ago. Something like the Twilight Zone or Tales From the Dark Side. This little girl talks her self centered and indifferent parents into taking her to a museum where you view people, couples mostly, through glass windows. They could talk to them by pressing a button. In the end it turns out that the girl could choose any couple to be her new parents and her real ones go into the museum to be viewed by other children. Ash is AWSOME!!!!!!

From a recent interview by Dave Simpson of The Guardian Tim said: "I wrote Girl from Mars in my bedroom at my parents’ house when I was 17. I think there was a bit of Mars hanging over us. I was listening to Pixies, who were sci-fi obsessed. My sister is 18 years older than me and was a David Bowie fan in her teens. Our rehearsal room had been her den, and she’d written Life on Mars in huge letters on the wall. I think I also saw a film called Girl from Mars, or something, in a TV listing magazine. It was on at 4am so I never watched it, but I made my own story for the song. I’d broken up with my first girlfriend, which was very intense, first love. I’d always been a happy child but for the first time was experiencing teenage angst, which I poured into the song. Aged 17, I was already nostalgic for those happier times. The previous summer, I’d gone on a family holiday to France. We met a bunch of cool kids and hung out on the beach, smoking cigars, which is where the line about “Henri Winterman cigars” comes from...we signed to Infectious Records, they put us in the studio to record a mini-album, but specifically instructed us to not record Girl from Mars. They knew it had the potential to be a hit and wanted to hold it back until we’d left school and could promote it properly." As far as I know he wrote this song about a girl from "Ards" in Northern Ireland and like he didn't want her to know that this song was about her so he changed the lyrics to "girl from Mars" instead. This could be complete bullshit but that's what I heard..

This song is awesome, but why is the US Version of the music video so rubbish compared to the UK version?
@taintedtapper10 жыл бұрын
The band hated the version they did for UK
@Dingalingring8 жыл бұрын
+taintedtapper Have to say that was a bad call on Ash's part. As 'rudimentary' and half-goofy as the UK video version was (presumably in their eyes, I mean), it still captured the energy and spark of the song way better than this dull shit I'm yawning through right now.
@MidnightandAugust8 жыл бұрын
+SallyTheSeahorse I agree, this video is rather dull and doesn't capture the 'spirit' of the song.
@johnroberts80887 жыл бұрын
In the US they still have issues with human bodies, the UK version they are topless and painted, SHOCK HORROR!!! Take for example the issues in the US with showing part of Janet Jackson's (covered up breast). In Europe you see breasts on TV all the time, even in commercials for shampoo (here in Germany for example). People, naked? HELP!!!! AHHHH RUN FOR THE HILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The thinking is that such shocking visuals will corrupt the youth of the US. For further reading research youth pregnancy rates, drug problem, gun problems in Europe v the US.
