If Gary never did any soul-searching before Johto started, this likely could work as a drawn out story if he stayed the main rival. And with him meant to be a form of guidance for Ash, Ash definitely would be affected by how he's acting and how it reflects upon himself and their bond. (Hmm, maybe play a bit more with his studious side? Not just as an ode to researching, but also in how he goes about things. Including his battle-style)
