Ashanti wrote this song in her limo outside of an event back in 2002. She didn’t experience domestic violence but she wrote the song from a hypothetical perspective. Rain On Me is probably one of her best records and was critically acclaimed for its subject mater and great visuals. Video was directed by the legendary Hype Williams shot in LA and Canada.

@@Justinblvdd I mean the video is about a man that broke her down emotionally and scared her without even laying a finger on her all while resenting her for her success and cheating on her. I don't see it as "domestic violence" even if the door breaking is violent it's more subtle and easy to keep under wraps cos it's not as provable. A lot of gaslighting involved too and manipulation. So I think the storyline I just described actually did happen to her in some form or another by a person she knew. It was too detailed to be just fiction. It reminded me of Britney's Everytime music video. Like mixing real life events from her life with dramatization to paint the picture.

Also Ashanti ran a whole PR campaign and partnered with Lidz in 2003 In support of DV victims. There’s a 10 minute version that shows everything and provides dialogue as well.
