Really great to see these, it was probably the first Australian summer i got into watching the cricket regularly, i was 10 back then. The Aussies made a game of it in the end despite a 1st innings deficit of 170.

01:41. Good one Frank Tyson. "Both of these players very good runners between the wickets". Next ball Cosier is run out lol. I guess Wood's reputation hadn't been fully established by this time!. Wood and Darling had a great time running between the wickets in the 3rd test in Melbourne for this series too.

To be fair quite a few of this Aussie "2nd XI" did play for Australia after the Packer players returned. Border, Hughes and Hogg were in the squad for the Windies and England tests in 79-80; Toohey played in the 3rd test v the Windies when either Hookes or Walters were injured; Wood and Yallop played in the Centenary Test in 1980; The likes of John Dyson, Geoff Lawson (1981), Bruce Yardley (1983) and Peter Sleep (1986) also appeared in the post Packer era. Incidentally one of the ABC commentary team defected to Channel 9 when they got the broadcasting rights, namely Frank Tyson

The Centenary Test wasn't in 1980!

@@chrispetritsch1291The one in England was. The first test in England was at the Oval in 1880 so the Centenary Test, naturally, took place at Lord’s.

This was really an Australia A side as the best Australian players were all playing World Series Cricket. It's obvious we had no batting depth in Australian cricket around this time because some of the batsman who represented the country were pretty bloody ordinary.

Graeme Wood was the Aussie equivalent of Geoffrey Boycott when it came to running his partners out

Wood and Rick Darling were probably the worst between the wickets as an opening pair.

@chrispetritsch1291 I think it's no doubt that wood was the worst runner, the old tip and run 😅

McClean 33 not out on debut remained his highest score as he was dropped primarily as he was a none batsman after the 4th test
