As a 19 year old growing up in the UK, i can tell you this was bigger than any world cup in Football, Rugby or Cricket. I've never seen an entire nation so engulfed in Cricket as I saw that summer. Every pub was full, every damn tram and bus had people glued to the radio listening to scores and every house had a tele where the match was being shown. It's almost as if for 2 months, the nation forgot about everything else going on and just focused on the cricket. I've seen the hype created in the nation when we came to the semis in football world cup in 18 or when we were in Euro finals last year. I remember the 03 world cup victory or our victory over all blacks in 2019. I remember our bloody brilliant victory in 2019 at Lords and Stokseys heroics at Headingly. But nothing quite captured the hearts and minds of English folks like this series in 05. Freddie was a household name and Warnie a household obsession. We loved to loathe him but so wished he was one of ours. I doubt I'll ever see such atmosphere for any sport ever again in the UK.

It was the same in India as well. 2005 Ashes is one of the most watched sporting events ever. Ponting's centurty at that Old Trafford test was the most amazing century I have ever seen
@jonnykfish2 ай бұрын
Agreed. Barely did any work that summer. People came into the hop industry was working in were a big disruption to my viewing 😂. Maybe cricket is better able to bypass the (dumb) social structure of English society than some other sports. Maybe we don’t hate the players as much as some other sports…. Maybe we don’t expect to beat the Ozzies too… Whichever reason it was or a mix of them (plus some decent weather helps), it was a great series and a great summer.

Australia had bigger legends (like they always do) but England had a united team with players playing to their maximum potential. Flintoff and Simon Jones had the best series of their lives. And they won.

I think you've missed the context a bit. England hadn't had a sniff of an ashes win in a long time. They outplayed them in the 3rd test but only drew the match and now England were on top again, they had to make them follow on, they had to make the aggressive decision almost as a show of strength and a belief in themselves.

I’m sure this was the game when Australia had to follow on. They nearly did a Kolkata 2001 on us. Michael Vaughan nearly paid a massive penalty for perhaps being over-confident!.
