What they are utilising is something called vertex painting. It's certainly not a new technology by any means and has many uses. You'll mainly see it used to add variation to textures, for example adding flaking areas to paint/plaster. I've not seen it used in the way they're using it here, to vertex paint and then displace based on the height map of the texture, but since unreal has all the bits integrated to enable this, I think they've just connected some dots rather than do anything revolutionary. I'm actually going to try and replicate this functionality myself since it appears they're just using a masked RVT to determine displacement within the modelling tools. Unreal engine 5 is going to be great. Emphasis on going to be. Its still quite a way off being really usable at scale. Sure, you can use nanite for static meshes, but you still need to use traditional LOD methods for foliage, animated meshes and anything transparent such as large water bodies. There's many other things which are going to take a year or two within UE5 to really get to a place where they're mainstream usable.

My take on unreal 5 and the tools intrepid studios are building is that the tools themselves, once they've proven their title is as epic as they think it is, can be sold off to other development studios for a tidy profit, and make an improvement in the industry itself, something Steven has said multiple times that he wants to do, not just make his game

@@nordy259 UE5 has some interesting ideas on how to capitalise their engine. For the most part UE5 works closely with devs in creating tools. The licence in most cases does not prevent UE5 from simply adding those tools into their core product that anyone can use. UE5 then takes a piece of the games ongoing turnover as payment instead of a set fee. It makes the engine incredibly accessible to both large studios and independent developers with an ever increasing pool of development tools at their disposal. It will be very interesting to see just how that works moving forward.

I think that UE5 can help with old GPUs but still it is more about future. I mean if you buy new graphic cards now they should be relevant for many more years with UE5 games. Maybe combination of UE5 and DLSS or FSR should made even older cards relevant too, so ashes should definitely implement these technologies. Currenly I have pretty average card from amd, but thanks to FSR I can play CP2077 on more than 60 fps with 2k resolution and with max settings.

I look forward to it and hope they take all the time it takes to make this special. It will take over the lionshare of this market if they stay true to what they have been saying/developing. It all looks amazing.
@Splincir2 жыл бұрын
I think one of ashes biggest strengths may also prove to be one of its biggest weaknesses when it releases. No matter how good everything may end up being, Steven has said this himself, they are making a game that isn't for everyone. With that comes the unfortunate reality of creating a niche game. What remains to be seen is based on their design choices, just how niche it will be. They could still be wildly successful, just not as successful as if they targeted a broader audience. That too comes with heavy detriment, and could land them in the very spot most mmos end up in which is mediocrity. My wife and I are stoked for the game, nearly everything said and shown off looks and sounds great. But for my wife in particular if the pvp is too painful she won't give it the time of day. She doesn't have an aggressive pvp competitive bone in her body, but the crafting systems, animal husbandry, freeholds, and economic systems, heavily interest her. She could probably spend countless hours exploring and gathering materials, raising unique animals and farming. But if she is ganged consistently throughout that process her and many like her will not find enjoyment in the game, and IMO as someone who enjoys challenging content and that sense of danger, even i don't enjoy what typically turns sadistic internet trolling in open pvp games. A2 will be a big determining factor for a lot of people, the majority of players, statistically, on whether they like where the pvp systems stand.
@JohnAPrescott2 жыл бұрын
@@Splincir I don't think the pvp will be as bad as everyone is making it put to be, yes, at the start you're going to have your asshats trying the system, bit after a week or two I think things will simmer down and be just fine. Besides there is going to be a TON of stuff to do besides fight each other. But, just remember don't travel alone, Especially if your out gathering something precious and worth money...and THAT is where the hired mercenaries come into play. Protect your back and be smart and I think you will have a grand time. Also, news travels fast...a true pk'er won't last long, his/her reputation will blow up quick and he/she will die ALOT. You also have the bounty hunters to pick up the slack as well...I do hope you and your wife have a grand time in Vera! Hope to see you in game soon!
@Tilley532 жыл бұрын
@@Splincir I really don't think PVP will be as prevalent as people think, traveling the world alone would reduce PVPers because most people want to be able to kill the same person over and over again until the person quits, if they have to travel to find different people most people don't like that. Also the reprocussions for being a PKer are pretty harsh, not being allowed in nodes (which is the main part of the game), bounty hunters chasing you and they can see you but you can't see them, reduced damage and reduced defence, the chance to lose the good armor and weapons that make you more powerful then other people. PVP will still happen but I doubt it's going to happen a lot and if it does it won't last long at all, I would say keep an open mind about PVP, it's a necessary part of the game, and when it isn't necessary it is very punishable for the person who commits to PVP against a non combatant

What scares me about nanite is the 20GB+ monthly MMO texture/downloads/updates that would make PS5 developers envious. Who knows what the new customer download size will be 5 years down the road, not just the terrabytes needed for it. Overcoming the performance window, by streamlining only what you want and only when you need it, does not negate the need for the RAW level of detail to still exist in a state to streamline.

Some corrections, those tools are UE5 Not Ashes tools (except what they talk about at the end... But all that is in UE5, right panel = outliner so wouldn't be surprised if its just UE5 again). At least what I have seen displayed. There are games that use nanite mostly on console not PC that put it through it paces (tl:dr UE5 is free until you hit 1 million profit Then you need to pay a royalty). So you can also download UE5 for FREE & load up templates that showcase on a grander scale than Ashes (current alpha 1) & emulate them, all listed on launcher if you want to see something more impressive that what is showcased. 8:17 is a good example of under modeling tools > Deform > Displace Simple, easy effective, Looks wrong if you doing environment artist up close, looks good far away e.t.c. They appear to be short cutting the rough & normals texture maps by just using modeling displacement, Which we used to shortcut by using megascans assets & pulling there textures & reusing them (or changing maps to just use the blue input), then adjusting it to give a more 3d effect. To answer the question you ask at the end "is UE really powerful enough to fulfill Stephens dreams" Answer is don't know about his dreams but its the one engine out there powerful enough to actually handle Modern day MMO's, Very surprised which how much they managed to get UE4 to render in the end when it wasn't really designed to do that (the many bears) But UE5 is designed to do that. Also a fun fact doing lighting in UE5 is PURE CANCER Feel sorry for the guy who is in charge of it!. UE5 (VFX Niagara) system will probably be the next showcased.

OK I am going to try and approach this a bit better. I am very excited and rooting for this game. I am a long time MMO fan. These are the games I enjoy. The technology is amazing. What the artists and programmers can achieve with the tools is what we have all been waiting for. It is exciting. They have very talented folks working on this game. We are being shown creative lifeforms that Wayne Barlowe and Guillermo would be proud of. What we are not seeing is the imaginary worlds for these creatures to live in. Example: We do not need another Barrens. Change the color on that rock formation and add some glowing bits maybe some big metals globes stuck halfway in. Change up the sky. Add vegetation that is as alien to us as the creatures. The world is like your friend getting the latest 3-D printer and printing a paper-thin model with a spreadsheet on it and going “look I have a 3-D printer.” OK so show us what it can really do. Do you think they will have the creative design link between world and creatures to transport us to Verra? As it stands Verra looks a lot like Earth. We appreciate your videos. Thanks, and keep them coming. Your intros are pretty fun.

Nanite doesn't solve as many problems as you think it does (and probably solves more than the haters think). For example the terrain for the moment doesn't use it, nor does foilage (at least if your terrain isn't made out of instances of things). Also it can't be used on deforming meshes (such as player characters), of course the fixed stuff like swords / shields etc. can use it. The terrain / foilage is likely a solvable problem, the skinned/deforming meshes probably isn't. There's a reason that combat demo used rock golems... It also has a fairly large "minimum" spec, it scales really well after that and will likely work on the proverbial potatoe spec once Ashes ships. But you're likely talking 1080+ (or more realistically 3080+) so "low-end" certainly isn't in current hardware spec (U5 needs CPU/Mem more than UE4 did too). I think interpid replaced the network stack with their own, but UE5 has some great improvements there too.

I saw a clip where someone used Niagra to place procedurally generated foliage like rocks and bushes. Mindblowing.

@@bitbraindev Wow. I've yet to see something like that, but I can definitely imagine the possibilities.

I was extremely excited until I seen the combat is going to be pretty much like every game before us. We need some action combat with assisted targeting. Combat like GW2 is alright, ESO failed the action combat, BDO overdid it, and the only game that sort of got close was Never Winter which turned into a P2W cesspool. Hoping to see Ashes find good middle ground, but I'm cautious to be optimistic here.

moving to EU5 was the right move, we already know how limited UE4 was and how many games failed trying to build a great game using most of the engine tools. If the AoC team is able to nail performance and the combat system im 100% the game will be great but if one of those fail we will have ton of content to meme about it.

I just wish they would've shown some real gameplay. Jumping there around and combining it with showing more combat gameplay wouldve been amazing. But I agree, super nice desert

I think the real reason that Intrepid hides the game play is there are key decisions that have yet to be made, and if they revealed flaws, the mob would descend on them, and they had to more time fixing expectations than fixing the game. These tools will really help Intrepid slingshot past expectations.

I think we will see them all out on Vera very soon. I think they're just tweaking a few things. They have a ton of stuff they're not showing us. If you remember the seasonal weather change was shown at their town hall in January. ;)

Looks good, I think the bigger problem is balance for the 64 classes. Imagine it's taking 5 yrs to build the world. Will it be another 5 for class/profession balance?
@estebanslavidastic43822 жыл бұрын
Naw, class balance isn’t that hard. There is only 8 classes also. The rest are hybrids. Sure there will be unique skills for all 64 classes, but that’s not as difficult as the groundwork.
@augustlewen21492 жыл бұрын
They got different people on different departments, so if that would be the case then that is a good thing, right? And there will always be unbalances in any game, they will be releasing patching post release to try to maintain some balance and making small adjustments to the different classes. And remember, yes there are 64 "classes", but it's not like they all have to be balanced and it's not like balancing classes in other games since the classes are based on your second archetype. it's not that important for all classes to be super balanced, as long as you have a couple of second archetype choices that will be balanced so that all characters can pick a primary archetype without worrying about never being able to be as strong as other players. If you can just change your specialization you can if you want just pick one of the possible stronger ones if you care a lot about meta gaming, but I would assume you could pick any of them without noticing much difference in your performance. Since these second archetypes only make small augments to your primary archetypes abilities, it is far more easier to balance than it would have been if every single class out of the 64 classes had unique abilities. So I don't think you should worry to much about this until we see more about the classes. And I am only speculating, depending on how much of an impact your secondary archetype has on your class it could be very difficult to balance if it has a big impact.
