I cried when I finally read the lyrics to this song. Such a twisted song, beautiful voice singing dark lyrics about a hopelessness that never get's any better. Some wounds never heal, sometimes life doesn't change for for the better, this song captures that essence with such an allure. The ashes of dreams, perfect title.

There's so many beautiful and surprising things about Nier's soundtrack, but of all the Japanese videogames I've played, the part of this song that shocked me the most is that it's in English AND it rhymes! That almost never happens in Japanese music with English lyrics.

Help?)" best guess is that it implies a loss so great as to rival ten of the worst in your life; in other words, 'a really bad thing' "The shadows extinguish the sun." 'No shadows' would make more sense in the context, though the sound is ambiguous.

@Jaguar1362 Oh! I never really focused on the "God" part - I heard it clearly as God at one point so I never listened for it in different ways. Now that you mention it, it sounds like it could be a lot of other things. I do hear 'of' before it, so it being 'back' wouldn't make sense... but I can't figure it out. Maybe 'black' or something?

@sephirothvsjenova I'm not so sure... It may help to listen to the .mp3 where it's much clearer which is what I've been doing... I really don't hear a 'come' at all. You would here the harder sound of the 'c'. I've listened several times now and I think she says "delusions are back".

@aetheria1 I know it doesn't really make sense (but if look at the whole song in retrospect, not everything does - I dont know how you can break phantoms) but I almost certainly hear a "t" sound and her European accent makes the "can't" sound a little less harsh and more like 'come' but I still really hear "can't". Same with "day" unfortunately. You'll have to turn it up really loud or listen in headphones but to me there a pretty clear "day" and can't seem to hear a "ah" or "n" at all...

One little problem I have with this song is that they sing: "Specters of plague and pain. All of these ghosts of our own delusions come back And we'll be haunted again, haunted again." The singer sings it as "Uh-gen," instead of "Uh-gain" making it not rhyme. I don't know why, but it just bothers me for some reason. Of course, the whole song is bothersome and depressing, so there's no point really...
