Man I had a great time watching this, thanks! Cracked up 3 secs into the vid and just kept laughing. Amazed at how many negative comments, so many people just feel what they know is it and there is nothing else. Well damned wrong. perhaps many of you have not ridden, tamed, tried different things,been thrown off enough or whatever. I say I have done a lot of what he mentioned and to a good end, none of you can say it didn't work for me, so you can't say "it does not work". Say you don't do it or like it or have a better way, not phylosophy a better way. There is Arab blood in the mare, hence the high tail, look at the face and the build before blurting such rubbish about pooping! The cruper is there because he damned well wants to use it, coral, shed, back garden or mountains, WTF, you put it on if you want, full stop. People need to live more.

Riina, many breeds of horses naturally raise their tails, especially gaited breeds (Tennessee walkers, saddlebreeds, morgans, etc...). It does not mean the horse is in pain. Horses usually show pain through their head carriage.
@riina3351

Shay McDowell Yes, trotters and arabians too. Tilting tail often tells that there is not enough room to spine or saddle is somehow unfitting. Not always but often. Horse is trying to get the nasty pressure of by twisting his/her tail. There can be also pain in some other reason. I have seen few cases, when tail tilting has stopped because saddle have changed. Not trying to be nasty or anything, but still. 😶

When i used the fence to stop the horse once my riding teacher yelled at me 'HEY DON'T USE THE FENCE TO STOP YOU'RE NOT SO BAD YOU CAN'T STOP THE HORSE YOURSELF ARE YOU?'
@alyssa-ch6zq

It can teach the horses bad habits sometimes, especially when you do it with lesson horses as they might run off into the fence with a rider that has little to no riding experience. What he was referring to is a situation where you have no control and your horse is bolting, in which case it is best to pull their head towards a fence to make them stop (or if you're in an open field just pull their head over and turn in gradually smaller circles until they calm down and stop).

I'm a new rider and it makes sense to me what Shawn is saying. Using one rein and getting the horse to turn slows him down.

Please don't listen to this guy! He's just trying to teach an emergency brake tactic for riding horses. would you pull the E brake every time you need to stop at a stop sign? No way! Because doing that wears down the response of the brake. Similarly, in horses, the more you one-rein-stop any time anything gets remotely too difficult for you, the less your horse will listen. I have been on a horse with whom the one-rein was way overused, and have had to correct that problem. Have you ever had a horse galloping full-speed with her head cranked to the side? It's not a fun experience.

Arabians don't carry their tails like that at the walk, only the canter. The tail loop he has around the tail is pulling the tail into an unnatural position Weird

Many “ right” things will work. Learn what not to do. It has to be subconscious when you react. Learn first how to kick out and push off til you can ride. Try not to let your hands come high to chin or chest, keep the light control pulling to your thigh from the front of the horn. Up on the swell while working, down in the well for rest. Disengage the rear end by turning. Neck reining? When you pick up a rein it pulls on the opposite side. A horse is into physical pressure but will turn away from emotional pressure( flee mechanism). Nothing he said was really wrong. I always wondered why you were told to mount from the “ near” side of a horse. Now I know it was simply the way most horses were trained. Four sides to a horse( front, rear, near, and off). Build confidence on all four sides before ever mounting. That’s my third grade education. Many correct ways to ride if you are the only rider. Horses are smarter than we are

I constantly have trouble with my horse getting to close to other horses. I've tried dropping my anchor and using the outside rein what would you suggest for backing up because when you're already to close and stopped it can be hard. I would love a backing up on a spooked horse video haha

you probably have to train your horse to do this because i think if a horse spooked you wouldn't have time to use a right rein. you would panic or stay calm and pull back on the reins. i had that happen to me, but i took control with out help :) i might not be right at what i said, but if i am wrong, correct me. i am just making predictions.

What you say makes sense. I practice this . BUT today when I went out riding I have to cross the highway to go into National Park. I waited to make sure no traffic could be seen or heard. I crossed the road when a mob of bike rides came over the hill and of cause my horse spooked and tried to run away but I was able to stop him. With everything going on I forgot to use the one rein stop. QUESTION: Should I have tried to get of my horse and control him from the ground as my friends told me.

Riina I'm literally trying to tell if your being serious or. It's on its side because she wants it like that. Horses do that, it's perfectly normal. Maybe she's in heat (which seems unlikely) and is doing it because of natural instinct.

Does the same single break rule apply for English?
@PsychicIsaacs
@PsychicIsaacs 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. My Dad taught it to me when I was a teen, and I use it all the time. These days I break (start) horses and before I teach a horse to go forward, I teach it the one rein brake, left and right rein. Spinning a horse 5 times, left and right, makes them much more amenable when you finally do tell them to go forward. They might try to go one rein or the other, the first few times, but once they get the idea that we're going straight now, they're fine. You just do this the first time you ride them, especially with warm-blooded horses and this method often works well with hotbloods as well, as long as they're not spazzing If a horse is spazzing, you need to go back to groundwork, Parelli's seven games etc. I've heard this method is not as effective on wild horses but I used it on a Mustang-Waler cross and she was fine with it! She was a really sweet natured girl, though. I ride English, BTW, so yes, one rein brake can definitely be used when riding English.

@alyssa-ch6zq
@alyssa-ch6zq 7 жыл бұрын
There doesn't have to be a fence to make this technique work. If you're in an open field or ring then you should pull on either rein (whichever you're stronger with is usually best) and make the horse turn in a circle, gradually making the it smaller as the horse slows down. This way, the horse is forced to slow down because obviously he can't gallop in a 10 m. circle. Hope this helped :)

Dominique Heino His bit about leaning forward and backward was in reference to trail riding. Leaning forward when you're traveling up a steep hill keeps you over your horse's center of gravity and give him more balance. Leaning backward going down a steep hill has the same effect. It's a much safer way to traverse mountainous terrain. Why this idiot is talking about riding form on the trails while he's supposedly teaching how to stop a bolting horse, I will never know.
