This married couple has written so many wonderful songs that other singers have recorded namely Diana Ross and Chaka Khan, but they had other hits of their own. They were magical. Nick Ashford has passed but Valerie Simpson is still alive and well. They wrote "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" !!!

This may have been the only Top 40 hit they sang for themselves but they wrote many others for different artists in the 70s and 80s. They were music industry veterans by the time this song came out. I'm pretty sure they had several hits on the Soul chart that they also sang. They even had a couple of their songs covered by Hard Rock groups in the 80s.

Nick and Val made a handsome couple that connected many other dots. One problem, Nick's health was becoming suspect and Val was never shy in saying "If we had stayed in the Studio, doing our thing, I might have had him longer" As for everyone else, Nick and Val played a major part in music history of the time

Always loved the a capella intro. An 80’s classic within the culture that crossed over to the Top 40. This is a feat that many R&B artists (as well musicians from other sub-genres) in the 80’s strived for but sadly not everyone succeeded. Wouldn’t be surprised if Nick and Val though the mainstream success of “Solid” was a fluke. Anyway, thank you Patreons!👌🏾

I understand the content of the category but they don't deserve the stigma that comes with one hit wonders. They are in the Songwriters Hall of Fame and probably future Rock and Roll Hall of Famers.

In my humble opinion, when Angela was curating this list of 30 songs for her May theme, she was taking into acct a lot of variables eg familiarity, variety, diversity, viewer traffic. “Solid” checks all those boxes. Yep, your point is a VALID one bc Nick and Val weren’t clout chasers nor were they MTV-thirsty. Like I said on another post, I’m sure they were both surprised when “Solid” was a bonafide Top 10 POP hit. Recorded by, say, Whitney, it was plausible that it would do well but reaching that status as themselves, they were prolly thinking fluke. That said, there’s no denying it’s a great (positive) song.

For those that remember 90’s duo Zhane’: thanks to a local DJ who loved to shout out sampling, Zhane’s song “Request Line” led me to “It Seems To Hang On”. I respect the message of “Solid” and it’s place in the culture (weddings, anniversaries) but “Hang On” is what comes to mind first when Nick and Val’s names come up in convos. It’s a great song as well. ✌🏽

As enjoyable as this channel is, the inclusion of artists like Ashford & Simpson and Patrice Rushen on any “one hit wonders” list can only be attributed to an unfortunate lack of knowledge of their contributions to R&B and jazz, respectively. Even Miles Davis only had one Top 40 on Billboard’s Charts and that was Bitches Brew at 35 in 1970. I’d like to think that he would not be called a one hit wonder. Thanks.

I understand your sentiments; rightfully so others have echoed your opinion. That being said, there was a criteria utilized here that was clearly explained when Angela announced the them on April 1st. In the last wk, I finally realized the issue you all had: the term “one hit wonder”. It’s largely negative, causing ppl to often snicker or roll their eyes. And the likes of talented musicians like Nick & Val, Patrice, etc don’t deserve that.

I think you need to come up with another title for what you are doing. To call Ashford and Simpson one hit wonder is a total disrespect for their careers. You should call it only 1 top 40 pop it. Their are some many other charts. Frank Beverly and Maze have never had top 40 hit and have sold millions world wide
@gabrielmcdonnell8699
@gabrielmcdonnell8699 Жыл бұрын
Agreed AND Angela says that in EVERY video. US Top 40 aka Hot 100. Artist must’ve only broken the TOP 40 POP CHART once. Legendary career aside, Nick and Val only accomplished this criteria once AS ASHFORD AND SIMPSON. As a music fan (and an R&B head, in particular), I understand all the criticism. That said, Angela has been very clear about this May theme when she announced it on Saturday April 1, 2023. The fact that our faves had many hits is inconsequential. The parameters were set and if artists didn’t make the cut so be it. In fact, the beauty of all this is that the likes of Luther (RIP) and Anita Baker had so many hits (and made millions) without the need for Top 40 validation. ✌🏽
