NICELY-DONE VIDEO ! I only just came across this video now - 5 yrs later ;-) Seems like the entire planet has gone SKAGIT MAD, until people don't even remember such a line (or a cast) as a "Scandi" (longer) or a "Spey" (longest) ! When I watched your video, one of the most important parts of the cast - that you DO extremely well even if you don't TALK about it - is to DRAW HORIZONTALLY across the water after your lift. This is an often-overlooked key ingredient in a Single Spey Cast - that as you draw back, you MUST be drawing the line across the surface of the water HORIZONTALLY, NOT pulling UP and DOWN as you turn. It's this HORIZONTAL drawing that empowers you to turn as FAR as you need, and then gently lower the line until it touches down RIGHT where you need to anchor. You do it well ! -Mark Vogt | VOGTLAND OUTDOORS

I use the single spey more than any cast. An important key is be able to cast off both shoulders, single and double spey. I have never seen anybody throw off the left shoulder in BC. They use a tack hand cast, bringing the rod over the left shoulder without changing hand position/orientation of a right hand spey cast.

That drift after the body pivot is absolutely key. Just learned the single spey today and I was having a terrible time until I realized that I had to do a little bit more with my bottom hand after the body pivot. That gave me way more line speed and tightened up the bloody L that was destroying my cast loop. Still have a ways to go to in getting more line speed and a tight v on the cast loop but I at least got a cast that actually looked like a single spey.

Well done! It's a very sneaky cast isn't it! Difficult but an important cast to have in your arsenal.

@@ashlandflyshop770 extremely sneaky, I went to another spot to practice more and it all fell apart. Just goes to show how many variables there are that you have to adjust for.

This is one of the only ways I can cast a well dressed hobo spey on my scandi head. Can definitely see it throwing a long belly great. Awesome video

Wow John really dig your insight and the way it’s made super simple 🤙. You really pricked my interest because I just bought an old vintage Bruce and walker hand built double Spey in 13’6” glass. It even came with the cork cover still on it never used for 75$. I’m thinkin I did better than my casting had been lol. Really can’t wait to use the beast. Gotta workout to handle the weight lol what’s your take on these rods bruh??

Damn - I wish someone in Eugene could teach this - I'd pay for a private session - Might need to make a day trip down your way for an hour on the water to get the mechanics down. Thanks for this detailed break down as I'm casting a 12' 6 wt with a 390 grain scandi head. I want to also attach a 12' 5in/sec sink tip for slightly deeper fishing - would the same mechanics apply? Skagit totally frustrated me and the single spey feels more natural to me hence why I went with a scandi head...
