Regarding "breaks:" The valve alignment of the horn matters greatly as far as having to push between valve combinations. But also, the normal changes in length of tubing require the need to add more or less air pressure. The horn may feel tightt hen going from more tubing to less, such as low Db to low C (3 valves to no valves), or even high A to high B (2 valves to the shortest 1 valve).

Brand new to trumpet, but what she is talking about (resonate sound) is a very intuitive concept. I was a little stumped when she said "crescendo," between the notes with differing air amounts needed, I know the term, but is she referencing air placement, holding back, or allowing more air for the attack?? I realized I have been practicing like this. Taking my time learning the notes and how they feel. Ashley Hall would be an excellent trumpet coach, if she isn't already! Yoga for trumpet?!!

Great class Ashley, thanks I'll be watching it for inspiration as I try to learn. Now a question for anyone that will respond to a really stupid question . The horn you are referring to as a cornet is what I thought to be a flugelhorn. Are they one and the same animal ?

A flugelhorn is a member of the cornet family (most of the tubing is conical not cylindrical), but it is larger than a cornet with a bigger bell flare and usually a bigger bell. It has a darker more Horn-like sound. Hope this helps.

They are not the same. The modern flugel is a saxhorn and the cornet is basically a posthorn with valves. You can tell by the lead pipe (flugel is very short lead pipe and cornet is very long. And the flugel is much more conical than a cornet. Over the years the trumpets and cornets have become very similar in tube taper construction while saxhorns have not tried to emulate trumpets at all.

Spectacular player. Haven't listened to entire master class yet, but amazed no references to Arnold Jacobs or Vincent Cichowicz, both so relevant to the subject at hand. It would be so great if Ashley would tie together these concepts.

Too technical. People learn via self-exploration with some support but this is way too "wordy".

I thought that it was very good. Different people learn in different ways, and what works for me might not work for you.

She’s making the thought process of playing the instrument very abstract and cerebral. Maybe she’s onto something, but I’ll need to listen again more carefully. Her approach to teaching is certainly different!
