Ashley way to go! BUT!! My great Aunt Lena loved Uncle Lenny, and she was a wise businesswoman. She did not have many of those entanglements - she just connected the dots! She worked with good advisors, yet they also were human and advised her to not take on certain issues! FYI, the "side eye" Dogma you mentioned is a bit off and skewed - All the singers lifted each other with recommendations, networking and many resources including Billie, Freddie, Lena, Harry, Robeson, Hazel, Ethel, Armstrong. The biggest issue among the individuals you have mentioned were they all were victims of self-hatred that undermined the temporary collaborations each of them had! The privileges that every one of them had created private battles with competition and viability because the "mainstream" (white) people in power pitched one black entertainer against another! Love your delivery, Ashley. In terms of presentation!, you rock! But your Facts? Not so much! If you knew real Black History and studied "meritorious manumission" syndrome under racism, you would focus on the Willie Lynch Syndrome type of drama the whites-in-charge created among Black entertainers! Whites chose whites and "lights" over others darker hued Blacks, and those whites were the architects who pitched drama among an already historically traumatized BIPOC (Black folks) entertainers! Try to tell the scandal from the Lion's purview and identify the hunter's fallacies, as Hunters (whites) were the people in power at that time. FYI, the studio heads created the press reports between fake feuds between Dorothy and Lena. Neither Lena nor Dorothy contributed to the H'wood gossip. It was driven solely by white publicists, like Hedda Hopper's and Louella Parson's (The Queens of Hollywood Gossip) & their stories of spin. Do the work, Ashley! Lena's beloved Lenny advised her when to speak and not speak, just for the sake of her career revenue. FYI, Robeson, himself, asked Lena to distance herself from him. Lena, then, contributed $$ to Paul and the Civil rights movement as she earned it! Her mother stopped predators , so she did not sleep with ERRbody as stated! Her dad and later her husband both steadfastly refused & turned down the standard 'black maid" roles. Lena fought back a lot. FYI, ALL. The black entertainers initially refused the first black superstar - Ms Josephine Baker- petition because she had failed to do work for the Black civil rights until much later in the timeline! Ava and Lena were entertainment besties because Lena cussed Sinatra out for Ava. Get the truth, Ashley and keep up the work, Sister friend! Grab Gail Lumet's Book The Hornes!

I love in your videos how you just give gossip and I've seen a few videos where family comes along and they state facts or at least their truth and you give them all a voice. Let’s not forget a very important part of why Lena Horne was hired at the Cotton Club (besides talent)…colorism and the paper sack test. You were more likely to be hired in high-profile places like the Cotton Club if your complexion matched or was lighter than a paper sack. Not judging, but colorism was a common, overt ideology and practice of that time. The Cotton Club was popular with whites at that time and was supposedly owned by the Mob, so lighter skinned blacks were more “appealing” to its white audience.

You are leaving out that the part of Julie that went to Ava Gardener in “Show Boat” (1951) was that of a light skinned woman of black heritage, so Lena Horne thought she was perfect and was going to get the part.. Same thing happened to Lena Horne, when she thought she was going to get the part of “Pinky” that was given to Jeanne Crain (who received a Best Actress Oscar nomination). “Pinky” (1949) is the story of a light skinned black woman, who returns to her grandmother's house in the South after graduating from a Northern nursing school. Pinky tells her grandmother, played by Ethel Waters [who received an Oscar nomination in Supporting] that she has been "passing" for white while at school in the North and has fallen in love with a young white doctor, who knows nothing about her black heritage. Both times, Lena Horne was passed over and a white actress got the big part in an Oscar nominated movie for playing a light skinned woman of Black heritage, this is part of the reason why Lena left Hollywood.

I'm from Bed-Stuy Brooklyn and about 1947, there was a Lena Horne parade for her, which I had gotten permission to join. When she was in the musical on Broadway, I went backstage and chatted with her. She was very tiny and gracious. As a young girl in Bed-Stuy, I was offered a chance to sing, but declined. I went on to Fashion Institute of Technology, started my modeling career. However, I ran into a jealous man like she did, had two children and it ended badly. But I have that Brooklyn spirit and did well with my life. Thank you for the video, it was very enlightening❗👏

Ashley, I noticed a slam about Lena in the movie Carmen Jones. Pearl Bailey was singing Beat Out the rhythm on the Drum and said…Ain’t gonna worry about Stormy Weather! Then the camera panned in on Dorothy Dandridge. Might have been a little jab there. Keep it coming Ashley…your content is fantastic!!!
@1234pouvez
@1234pouvez 10 ай бұрын
Pearl Bailey did not write the lyrics to the song. She just sang the material that was given to her. The camera did not pan in on Miss Dandridge As she was singing the song. You could see Miss Dandridge along with. other people sitting at the bar. from a distance. Had Miss Horne wanted the role she could have arranged a meeting with PRIMInger, through her agent, and gone through the audition/screen test process the same way Miss Dandridge did. However, when the movie was made, Miss HORNE was too old for the role. In a Lena Horne Interview from 'The McCreary Report,' 1988 MIss Horne states that she, herself wasn't that interested in acting. She said Miss Dandridge was beautiful, brilliant, and a great actress. The interview can be seen on KZbin. This contradicts all the B.S. said in this video.

Great job, Ashley! I was convinced you would sing Stormy Weather for us, in honor of Miss Horne :-). One of the last pictures you had up of Lena Horne, was of course from her appearance on Sanford and Son (my all-time favorite show). You missed out on why Ethel Waters disliked Ms. Horne...because of the song STORMY WEATHER. The song was originally ETHEL WATERS song and the powers that be TOOK THE SONG & gave it to Ms. Horne to be her SIGNATURE song and forevermore Ethel Waters hated her....which is sad. MS Horne was a wonderful boss & I performed with her on LENA HORNE: THE LADY & HER MUSIC BROADWAY SHOW. She had magnificent stories about her life and I enjoyed listening to them. She paid us extremely well and she made sure our birthdays were not forgotten and our holidays were great. I even had the pleasure of meeting Muhammad Ali thru my working with her and that was a TRUE thrill. Stay Safe. Btw-Ms.Horne had 2 children to feed and that will ALWAYS COME 1ST. I always though Lena Horne looks were overrated because she looked close to white , I thought Dorothy Dandrich and Hazel Scott were wayyy more beautiful!

Are you serious! Do you understand that there was more to Lena than her physical beauty? She was a pioneer and role model in Entertainment and politics. She was very active in The Civil Rights Movement. Hazel was also a strong activists for Blacks and women rights. Why do so many women trivialize other women's accomplishments?

@@lmcperson And in May of 1963 MISS Dandridge gave a speech at a Freedom Rally in LA. She was introduced by Dr. KING. Hazel Scott was a renowned pianist. LENA HORN was a singer. There was no competition between the two. Had Miss Horne wanted the role of Carmen she could have arranged a meeting with PRIMInger, through her agent, and gone through the audition/screen test process the same way Miss Dandridge did.

Great review! My mom took me to see her show on Broadway, The Lady and her Music. It was amazing. She was in her mid 60's and still had the voice. She was also still beautiful.
