"Ashoken Farewell" was composed by Jay Ungar in 1982 and served as the goodnight / farewell waltz at the Ashoken Fiddle & Dance Camps by Ungar and his wife Molly Mason. It is composed in the style of a Scottish lament, with solo violin opening the first stanza in most versions. It was first recorded on "Waltz of the Wind," an album by the band "Fiddle Fever."
It rose to greater prominence when it was used as the title theme of the 1990 PBS television miniseries "The Civil War" by Ken Burns. Burns also previously used the tune in "Huey Long." It was later used in an episode of "Louie" and most recently in the premier of "Yellowstone."
I've recorded this song for Memorial Day 2022.
