I have to confess to being a total barn owl nut. We were lucky enough to be able to buy a smallholding about 25 years ago and putting up barn owl boxes and keeping significant areas uncut to promote a healthy vole population were some of the first things we did. We are rewarded by the sight of a barn owl quartering the fields on many evenings. It seems to have grown used to us watching it and often flies past at head height only a few yards away.

These owls are losing some of their habitat, thanks to people buying old barns & doing barn conversions. I got used to seeing these wonderful birds of an evening, as they flew like silent ghosts out of the thick forest behind my family home. Absolutely beautiful birds !

Barn owls are making a great comeback in my area of North Norfolk, I usually see one or two along the back lanes at night. Last week, I was lucky enough to encounter one of the rarer 'dark phase' versions of a Barn owl sitting on a roadside post as I drove out of the village of Langham on the Morston road. These beautiful rich toffee coloured versions are a sub-species that occasionally drop in from continental Europe. All the best mate and keep up the brilliant work.

I have never seen a Barn Owl. I have to be content with what I'm pretty sure are Tawneys. I live almost at the top of the first ridge across London north of Finsbury Park - about a km. There's a line of enormous plane trees across the top of the ridge. Until about three years ago there was a pair of Tawny's lived along there. Never saw them but their call was unmistakable in late evenings. Lovely!

1965-1976 I lived at Hillrise Mansions, near the top of Hornsey Rise. Behind us was a bowling green, some waste land and a disused railway line/adventure playground. My balcony leading to front door was on the first floor. Several times I saw a barn owl just a few metres from my head. Very spooky when nobody is around. Their screeching was even more blood curdling. Added to that I frequently heard barn owls. I was a teenager-early twenties then, so out & about late a night. I now live North Grays Essex. My house backs on to a row of ancient oaks & agricultural land. Not heard a sound from any owls. I see jays this time of year.

When we went to the Hawk conservancy trust near Andover they on an indoor demonstration as bird flu restrictions had just been introduced that day, They demonstrated various birds merlin, peregrine, tawny owl and the barn owl. The one thing that stood out with barn owl over all the other birds was how silent it was and how little it disturbed the air. The handler actually got the owl to fly about 6 inchh=es above my head and I didn't hear it or feel it. Incredible birds. Another great informative video.

I’m a bit uneasy with owls. They do look quite haunting. But they are interesting too. Kinda like being fascinated by something that scares you. Barn owls do that shriek noise that is startling. But owl parents are dedicated couples and they are very family bonded.

During hurricane Milton a hollowed out Royal Palm that had been dead for several years was blown over. I hadn't removed it because I saw many birds use it. The next morning the hurricane was gone and I went out to examine the trunk. It was cracked length wise so I lifted one of the long pieces and found 5 Barn owl chicks. One was in rough condition one was strong and wanted a fight the others were seemingly healthy. They should be at the Blue Pearl animal shelter in Fort Myers Florida. Very amazing.

This was very interesting to me so thank you for the video, I will let you off the awful puns 😊 - I lost my dad a few years ago and have been searching for the perfect tattoo for me as one of the last things we did together was a bird of prey morning at a local bird sanctuary. They are extremely beautiful and were mine and dad’s favourite bird. I was recently in France on a fishing trip, and just at sunset a barn owl flew side on over myself and a friends head … it looked so majestic especially when the sun caught that beautiful colours they have in complete silence. Thanks again.

In Indian Contemporary Culture, barn owls have a deep rooted significance !! Indians believe owls to carry prosperity to them. We have a Goddess named Mahalakshmi, who is the bestower of prosperity and is often associated with wealth values. She rides a barn owl or we can say barn owl is a vehicle of her *_(Vahana)_* . By this way, owls are considered to be auspicious in India !!!

Today driving down a country road I came across a large bird in the middle of the road eating fresh road kill. As I got closer it flew up in front of me and to my shock and surprise it was a barn owl…at 10am. I know nothing about owls other than you hardly ever see them and they come out at night. Is it so hungry that desperate measures were needed. I felt blessed to have been able to see it but I couldn’t help wondering if it was okay?

Some lovely filming but some of your 'facts' are wrong which is a real shame. For example, Barn Owls don't have "territories". The problem is, when you say something that's plainly wrong, it casts doubt upon everything else you are saying.
@AShotOfWildlife
@AShotOfWildlife 2 ай бұрын
Thank you for pointing that out. I have used the word territory whilst meaning nest site/home range/hunting grounds. This was a bad choice of phrase, as you point out they are not territorial in the sense that they defend their space from intruders and I should have used a alternative word.
