Juan Martin is the most complete flamenco artist in my opinion. He is not only one of the best flamenco players ever born, but also an amazing composer and teacher. He has been teaching flamenco to people all around the world with his videos. It is especially when we consider that many flamenco master is really secretive about their technics. The flamenco lovers are really greatful to him.

A lot of "so called" flamenco players put Juan down. Surprising how many of those same ones learned from his books and videos, etc. They are monday morning quarterbacks. The guy is a great player. I wish he would come to San Francisco!

Do it by ear. I have been playing the oud for almost 2.5 years now and the violin for half a year. Every piece that I know is through the ear. I don't know how to read notes on paper because I'm too lazy to learn them. But this has trained my ears to a large degree. I can tune my instruments by ear without digital tuner. And I can pick up melodies easier then before. Also, it's easier for me to imagine sound in my head. Which helps a lot to remember melodies, but also to improvise solo instrument piece in the get go while playing. Although that may sound weird to say, it is.
