ASI Air Auto Guiding - How To Fix Over Correction Problems

In this video I'll show you how to fix the calibration data in the ASI Air. This data is critical in order for your auto guiding to work properly. I had changed astronomy cameras and it caused the guiding to fail. I'll show you how to get going again.

Thank you so much for this video. I had this problem tonight and, after nearly pulling the last bit of hair I have left out of my head, I wrapped up the gear and headed in. We had a rare clear night tonight here in Ireland so it was disappointing not to have gotten some imaging done. I'll be out the next clear night running through this routine. Much appreciated!

wow! just wow! I'm a newbie to the Asiair and during my first setup I put the 30mm instead of 120mm in for the guide scope focal length. I corrected this and after that all my guiding was wacky. for over 2 weeks I tried dozens of uninstalls and reinstalls and changing all the settings. nothing worked until watching your video and discovering the key was to "force" clear the old settings and then recalibrate. this saved me. thanks soo soo much for making this video!

That's good news that you got it to work. Saving the settings is a great feature, but it causes problems if you make any change. I too had a similar issue.

Dude, I have been struggling to image for the last 2 weeks after I switched my guide camera. I feel so stupid realizing the rookie mistake I made. Thanks for this video, I am sure it will help many other folks struggling.

Glad it helped. I have made mistakes too and lost a lot of imaging time not realizing at the time what was wrong. Things aren't so obvious sometimes when you are imaging.

pretty sure you need to adjust your calibration step. it shouldnt take more than 4 or 5 steps in any direction to calibrate, thats why its taking so long!

Yesterday I switched cameras on my same WO Z81 (HEQ5) rig, guiding was terrible with my ASI071 camera, at first. Then I moved to another target, switched to ASI533, focused again, kept everything else the same, and.... Guiding dropped from 2.0 to 5.0 on the ASI071 to an amazing 0.2 to 0.3 on the ASI533. Amazing... I was using a mini ASI120 guidecamera and a 200 mm WO guidescope.. Have no idea what happened, is it a matter of pixel size difference, between cameras ? Field of view - difference ? Or that I was using old settings on the ASIair plus, calibrated to my older ASI533 camera ?

Your new results are fantastic. I'm not sure what happened but I now know that if any change is made to your guiding setup, a new calibration should be done. You mentioned that you switched cameras so I suspect that the calibration was originally done there and when you went back to that camera the guiding was great. To test this, you could go back to the ASI120, re-calibrate, and see how it guides.

Adjust the aggression, should be looking at sub 1.5 or lower, or PA is out slightly

Yes that's a good tip. It takes some adjustments but I now regularly have around 0.9 arc seconds total error.

Dude PLEASE, HELP ME. I’m struggling for 3 weeks and I’ve finally found someone with the same problem and same gear I have, the 120mm Mini guide camera! Around 3:21 , your screen is bright, almost like brightness / gama is super high. And you’re guiding on just 2 stars. That happens to me ALL THE TIME. But later down the video, your screen is a bit more black and you’re guiding in multiple stars. I need that, a more black screen and to guide on multiple stars!!

This is due to the exposure time of your guiding camera and the sky brightness. Early in the evening just after twilight, it will be super bright and may not even guide at all. Later when the sky is darker so will the guiding. To adjust, set the exposure time lower if it's over saturated. There is also a setting in the AsiAir to guide on multiple stars. I have that turned on all the time.

Agreed you calibration needs to be a lot higher like 2000-3000
