The University of Melbourne launched its Asia and Pacific Outlook Series, with the inaugural Southeast Asia Oration delivered by Mr Pita Limjaroenrat MP, Member of the Thai House of Representatives and Former Leader of the Move Forward Party.
Mr Pita Limjaroenrat MP is a Thai politician and businessman. He is currently a member of the Thai House of Representatives. Pita has been involved in politics since 2004 and led the Move Forward Party, the most ambitiously progressive in Thailand's electoral history, to win a plurality of seats and become the largest party in the 2023 general election.
Following the Oration Mr Limjaroenrat was joined by an expert panel to discuss the health of diplomacy in the region, moderated by Professor Michael Wesley, Deputy Vice Chancellor Global, Culture and Engagement.
Panelists:
Dr Anna Dziedzic, Programme Officer for Constitution Building Processes at the Asia Pacific Office of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA)
Professor Vedi Hadiz, Director of the Asia Institute, University of Melbourne
Ms Syme de Leon, PhD Candidate at the Asia Institute, University of Melbourne

Pita brought back my hope in Thailand's democracy. Being hopeful is the only way to move forward even though it's the most challenging quest for us all. I'm still hopeful for ASEAN. I hope it'll become a thing again.❤

Positive talking points on reviewing the Charter of ASEAN, it's truly about time! We have such high potential in this region, but we must seriously look within each member country and collectively and contribute how we can best speak and stand as ONE! And yes, the concern about democracy and dynasty politics must be addressed!

ASEAN must get its act together for its own good and benefits, that's the bottom line. As a region we can be our own alternative vis a vis the western countries and their definition of democracy and way of life. We must demand more of ourselves as ASEAN, individually as a country and collectively.

Thailand claims to be a democratic country, but its actions often reflect a dictatorial regime. Despite holding elections and having a constitution, the reality on the ground tells a different story. For instance, the recent dissolution of the opposition Move Forward Party by the Constitutional Court on politically motivated allegations highlights the ongoing suppression of political dissent. This move has severely damaged the country's prospects for genuine democratic governance. Moreover, Thailand's history of military coups and the significant influence of the military in politics further undermine its democratic credentials. The 2019 elections, which were supposed to mark a return to democracy after five years of military rule, resulted in a military-dominated government. The constitution, drafted by a military-appointed committee, ensures that the military retains substantial control over the political process. Additionally, the government has employed authoritarian tactics to stifle dissent, including arbitrary arrests, intimidation, and harassment of activists. Freedom of the press is constrained, and there is little accountability for crimes committed against activists. The use of lèse-majesté laws to silence critics of the monarchy is another example of the regime's repressive measures. The United Nations can play a crucial role in supporting democracy in Thailand. The UN has a long history of promoting human rights, development, and peace, which are essential components of a democratic society. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has already expressed deep concern over the dissolution of the Move Forward Party, emphasizing the need for political pluralism and the protection of fundamental freedoms. The UN can continue to advocate for the review and reform of laws that suppress dissent, such as the lèse-majesté law. Furthermore, the UN can support civil society organizations and activists in Thailand by providing platforms for their voices to be heard and by offering technical assistance and capacity-building programs. By promoting inclusive dialogue and encouraging the Thai government to adhere to international human rights standards, the UN can help foster a more open and democratic political environment. In summary, while Thailand presents itself as a democracy, its actions often contradict this claim, revealing a more dictatorial nature. The United Nations can help by advocating for legal reforms, supporting civil society, and promoting human rights and political pluralism.

Yes, that's because he doesn't have money like Thaksin and doesn't have power like Prayut. I mean... Look at Thaksin, how many billions does he have? Look at Prayut, he has power as the army commander. What else does Pita have besides his ideas? Nothing. He has nothing.

Prime Minister elect of Thailand whom was blocked by the Senate, of which 100% members had been appointed by the junta leader, Prayut Chanocha The constitutional court is now working on dissolution of Pita's party and trying to rule a decade/ life-time ban to him. The court judges were also handpicked by several junta governments / underlings of them. This court has dissolved at least 5 major popular democratic parties since its establishment. Thailand desperately needs help. 😢
