2. MR KHAMON’S HOME
ADDRESS: Muang Fuang
🇱🇦FERMENTED SWALLOWS: start by pounding garlic, onion, spring onion, coriander, lemongrass, and local spicy pepper into a paste. Mix the paste thoroughly with the swallows in a banana leaf, then wrap it securely and clamp it onto a bamboo skewer. Cook the wrapped dish over a fire for approximately 30 minutes until it's fully cooked and infused with the delightful flavors of the spices and herbs.
🇱🇦MONITOR LIZARD: Chop the meat of the lizard, add salt, MSG, garlic, and a bit of water to the meat. Fry the meat for 10 minutes. Boil the lizard skin for 15 minutes, then chop it and mix it with the meat. Add spring onion, galangal, lemon juice, mint, rice powder, and chili powder to the mixture. Season after cooking and mix everything together.
🇱🇦BAT IN BAMBOO TUBES: Wash the bat in water. Burn the hair of the bat, as they like the taste of the burn. Wash the bat again and cut it in half without cleaning. Mix together chilies, lemongrass, galangal (ginger), garlic, Sichuan pepper, MSG, and salt. Pound the mixture to create a paste. Pour the paste over the bat and mix it in. Add shallots, coriander, dill, spring onion, more MSG, more salt, and water. Put the bat in a bamboo tube. Add water to the bamboo tube. Cover the tube by stuffing a banana leaf in it. Cook the bat in the bamboo tube for 30 minutes.

🥒 ABOUT BEFRS:
Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

As a child born of this war, this episode made me emotional especially when Yia started talking about his parents, Laos, and the war. My dad was also in the military and the story Yia told is similar to the stories my parents told to me. I miss my parents more watching this video. My dad was also a great cook.

It’s no the choice of food what bothers me, but how they treat the animal before they consume it. I’ve been all across Asia, they don‘t care too much about the animal, it’s simply a food Ressource. I don‘t mean to insult anyone, I love the Asian countries, and met lovely people. This is simply my observation while I‘m traveling

Here's a fun fact: My mom is Hmong and was in a refugee camp in Thailand. She immigrated to the US in 1992. The previous year the movie Terminator 2 came out and apparently it was shown to the camp my mom was in. The movie scared Hmong people so much that it created a fear of going to the US, because they thought Americans were like the T-1000. According to my mom, there were a couple Hmong families that refused to go to America because of this.

Bizarre bat dishes notwithstanding, this transcended food, and delved into culture and history, bringing together families that fought each other during a war decades ago. Your co-host must have experienced a sort of healing and closure by being on the same ground his father trod as a young man. The love of food and discovery has made that happen. Sunny, keep this show going, it's what we all need.

These are my favorite, going with the people that know what they are doing and catching the animals for food. Shows you the process and how its also a source of food and income in the area. Loved this.

Fun fact about hunting squirrels.....the best way is called "barking"....use a large caliber and just shoot the tree near the squirrels head. It will give the squirrel a concussion.....maybe even kill it, and it falls and you can get it without blowing the little critter up with the shot.

Good review, but we all know that Covid didn’t come from bats lol. It came from a lab.

Worked for a coffee company, we received sacks of green coffee from Vietnam. (Robusta) And the product/quality just got better and better with every shipment. "Foe to Friends'… it's what Americans do in all our wars😂

Not that anyone cares, but I’m going to share anyway. We all know Sonny married someone that he’s had on as a guest host…at least once. He mentioned once in a podcast interview that he only kissed one co-host and she became his wife. I just rewatched the how it’s made episode he put together. He travels to all kinds of factories, one of which is a cheese factory in Vietnam. They make fresh, artisanal cheeses. His co-host is named Hanh and she used to have a KZbin channel where she documented her single life, called Hanh Around. I think she’s his wife. There are a few reasons why I think this, but I’d wager that I’m correct. Maybe one day we’ll find out and we can wish them both congratulations on their marriage. Til then….aaaah peace! ✌🏻🥰😊

Monitor lizard is kinda super food in Thailand, especially its skin. It's illegal to hunt now, and skin alone can be sold upto around ten thousand bucks depend on condition and pattern for making luxury bag.
