It’s “BET”! Played this at my parents funeral, 21 years apart. There is a video of her performing this at Yankee stadium for the surviving families of the victims of 9/11. That performance will bust you up. The song is from the movie “Beaches” soundtrack. Bette is a great bubbly vibrant woman and her live shows back in the 80s were hilarious! I saw Bette about 7 years ago and her live shows are still a hoot. So much sexy whimsical joy. My bucket list consisted entirely of seeing Bette live before she or I passed whichever should happen first. She did not disappoint. I went with my husband and my parents and the four of us had such a special time. When she lies on that lip shaped couch and sings an entire song laying practically upside down and not missing a note is EVERYTHING.

This was a beautiful song from a great movie about a lifelong friendship of two women & the ups & downs of life & relationships & hardships. "Beaches' is a great movie & Bette has an amazing voice. Ironically, she started out as a comedian & her shows mixed her singing & her comedy. And she is a bawdy broad with naughty humor. Then she is also a great actress. Talented woman & activist. I've seen daughters dance with their fathers at their wedding to this one, more than once.

Here's some fun facts about this song: It has long been assumed that the song was written for Bette Midler. Written by Larry Henley, formerly of the Newbeats, and Jeff Silbar, was first recorded by Roger Whittaker in 1982 as well as by Colleen Hewit and Sheena Easton. It was also recorded by Lee Greenwood (1983), Garry Morris (1983), Lou Rawls (1983), Gladys Knight and Gladys Knight & the Pips (1983), under the title ‘Hero.’

Despite her recent remarks, some of which have been controversial, Better Midler is a remarkable singer/actress. The Divine Miss M used to work with Barry Manilow in men's Turkish baths in the 6o's as they were both coming up. Two of her early hits include, DO YOU WANNA DANCE, DELTA DAWN, and of course THE ROSE. Definitive performances that help establish her audience. She is also in the WE ARE THE WORLD video but not prominently featured. You might also checkout Taylor Dayne and her powerhouse lovesong, SEND ME A LOVER.

She does another song from the movie Beaches called I Think It’s Going To Rain Today. (Written by Randy Newman). To me, it’s even more emotional than Wind Beneath My Wings and she does a beautiful job with it. Fun Side Note: she was just starting out in the early 70s when she hired a skinny piano player to be her musical director/conductor/arranger, and he eventually produced Grammy winning albums for her. That geeky genius was none other than Barry Manilow, who launched his own career while touring with her.

The song was first recorded by Kamahl in 1982 for a country and western album he was recording. Kamahl talked about being the first to record the song in an appearance on Australian TV show Spicks and Specks, but stated it was not commercially released because it was felt he did not suit the country and western style. Instead, Roger Whittaker recorded the song, as well as Sheena Easton and Lee Greenwood. The song appeared shortly thereafter in charted versions by Colleen Hewett (1982), Lou Rawls (1983), Gladys Knight & the Pips (1983), and Gary Morris (1983).

Roger Whittaker was the first person to record this and release it. There were a lot of famous versions in the 6 years before hers, but Bette's is the most famous by far. She's a helluva singer. The two guys who wrote it (Silbar and Henley) wrote a lot of other stuff, but nothing anywhere near as big as this. If this was the only song they ever wrote, they would have earned their time on Earth living and making whatever human mistakes they made, because this song has lifted so many people's spirits, and created so many good feelings between people, that anything else they did wrong could never overwhelm the good this song has brought to humanity since its creation.
