If you listen to other versions, or if you've ever done a performance a stage, you can feel and hear the hesitations brought on by one of the two missing a cue, misspeaking, etc. But the skit is so flawlessly constructed that they can ALWAYS recover. Love your reactions. Here [I know it's been a little while since you posted this but hopefully, you'll read this at some time] just wanted to mention by this time they have been doing this routine for many years [over ten for sure] and they never do it the same way twice. These two have been working together for so long they have developed an understanding of each other and the way this routine [as so many of theirs do] works is to follow each other's lead. By key phrases they move it along. They do "mess up" a little sometimes but it goes so fast it's easily overlooked as when either does miss a cue or lead incorrectly into the next line they correct each other to keep it moving. Notice at around 6:39 in the video when Bud puts his hands on Lues arm he is trying to "cue" the next part of the bit. But Lou feels he has missed some more lines that he wants to add so he re-directs Bud into the next few "miss-understandings". [bud was trying to take Lou to the "receipts" part of the bit, but Lou will get there a little later after adding what he wants to {from all the ways they have of doing it} so Lou took charge of the direction for just the next short while, when usually it is the "straight man" that leads the "conversation". Bud, of course is the straight man in their acts] So Lou took over for just a few more of their practiced lines before relinquishing the lead back to Bud. Notice at just a few seconds later at around 6:46 Lou now touches Bud on his shoulder and says [seemingly as part of the routine, they do it so well] [Touching each other must be the cue to the other he's talking to him more directly, not as much a part of the routine as it is some messaging to each other to help or guide the other] "I'm going to stop asking you soon". That is Lou re-assuring Bud that he will bring it back to the receipts part soon enough and that he knows where they are in the sketch [and he is letting Bud know he did pick up on the direction bud wanted Lou to go]. From there they go very smoothly and without looking up the time stamp [I did. It's around 8:43] I know Bud has to correct Lou in a "lead up" line later on. You'll notice, as Lou is negotiating the middle of the pitcher's name bit Bud has to help Lou to lead him into the next miss-understanding [I'm calling the joke punch lines that. I don't know how else to describe each line] He has to ask Lou "what time what?" to get Lou to ask the question again, only phrased correctly for the joke [miss-understanding line] to work. [Lou needed to ask, "what time tomorrow you going to tell me who's pitching [Lou missed adding "who's pitching" to the whole line that he first fed back to Bud] [first he asked, "what time tomorrow you tell me the pitchers name?". He missed the important part: who's pitching] This is how smoothly they work together and how they can move so fast through it. They have several practiced remarks to each "lead in" and can use them as they feel to, to move the story along. Very polished team. [the best in the nation in their prime] [that lasted ten years or so] Basically from vaudeville, the duo comedy routines often had a "straight man" [leading the direction of the story] and a kind of dim-witted man who made the routines funny. Basically, the dim-witted guy got all the laughs. They truly were the best of that fading art from the vaudeville days. Again, love your reactions. [I watched a couple react to this a while back and the guy didn't get it till almost the end! He really thought Bud wasn't answering Lou!] [But the weirdest of all was a girl reactor who Never Did understand the routine! She got all the way through and NEVER Understood that those were the names of the players!!] [needless to say, all she had was anger for Bud for not telling Lou what he wanted to find out and she didn't like the humor] [felt sorry for her] Of course you got it right away, as you should if actually listening to it, and it's great fun to watch your enjoyment as the routine progressed and in all the videos you react to. So, keep up the reactions! Love to be a part of them when I get a chance to watch. Good work!

In 6th grade, our teacher brought in a VCR to play this clip. We all laughed, but found it really hard to follow. The teacher had slowly started to draw a baseball field on the blackboard and filled in the names of each player. Once we saw the drawing and fully understood what the team was like on the field, it became easier to follow, but actually funnier because it made so much sense that it felt impossible NOT to understand what each player's names were. This was WAY back in the early 80's. Here we are today, and this bit is even funnier NOW than it was back then for me because I used to play baseball for almost 10 years growing up and now my son is starting to play little league and he can't keep up with all the names all the time. So when he is talking about his game or practice, I am giggling because I am thinking of this routine as he is trying to explain what happened to my wife and little girl.

From Wikipedia: “"Who's on First?" is descended from turn-of-the-century burlesque sketches that used plays on words and names. Examples are "The Baker Scene" (the shop is located on Watt Street) and "Who Dyed" (the owner is named "Who"). In the 1930 movie Cracked Nuts, comedians Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey examine a map of a mythical kingdom with dialogue like this: "What is next to Which." "What is the name of the town next to Which?" "Yes." In British music halls, comedian Will Hay performed a routine in the early 1930s (and possibly earlier) as a schoolmaster interviewing a schoolboy named Howe, who came from Ware, but now lives in Wye. By the early 1930s, a "Baseball Routine" had become a standard bit for burlesque comics across the United States. Abbott's wife recalled him performing the routine with another comedian before teaming with Costello.[1] Bud Abbott stated that it was taken from an older routine called "Who's The Boss?", a performance of which can be heard in an episode of the radio comedy program It Pays to Be Ignorant from the 1940s.[2] After they formally teamed up in burlesque in 1936, he and Costello continued to hone the sketch. It was a big hit in the fall of 1937, when they performed the routine in a touring vaudeville revue called Hollywood Bandwagon.”

Four points: 1) Both Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were comedic geniuses. It is why their two-season show, from 70 years ago, is still in re-runs today. That speaks volumes for how amazing those shows are. 2) Bud Abbott is considered to be the best straight man in comedic history. He delivers his lines expertly. He comes across as genuine. How he got through those scenes, without breaking character, is a testament to his talent, professionalism, and sheer willpower to keep from laughing. 3) Sidney Fields played the role of their landlord. He, too, was a comedic genius. There were other very talented actors that were repeated guests on their show. Mr. Bacciagalupe, played by Joe Kirk, played varying funny and entertaining characters, also never breaking character. 4) Many of the scenes were filmed in one take, with one camera filming the entire scene. That gives us the "you are there" experience. No camera theatrics to detract from the performance. You almost forget that you are watching a recording. We get to sit and watch, with little or no post recording editing. Today, we have constant camera angle changes, constant zooming in and out, and shaking the camera for effect.

My fave entertainers - arguably the greatest comedy skit ever - the verbal dexterity is akin to watching fine jazz.

Hello. I'd like to recommend some other Abbott & Costello comedy routines. Not necessarily in this order. 1. Loafing 2. Two Tens for a Five 3. 7 Into 28 4. Loan Me 50cents 5. Handcuffs

This was a wonderful reaction! Having a layman's indifferent knowledge of baseball, I really appreciate your expertise. My long dead parents (I am old enough to be YOUR grandparent or great grandparent.) MIGHT have been able to explain the details to me. Thanks for giving me a new appreciation of this iconic skit.

A & C got together in 1935 and both had a history in standup in Burlesque and latter years of Vaudeville. This clip was from 1953 (the year of my birth 😁) and was well-established in the American psyche well-before this. They also did 36 movies together from 1940-56 ..many of them hilarious classics. And they also showcase how acrobatic "pudgy" Costello was. It's not easy to pick just one, but ABBOT and COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN is probably my favorite. It featured the late greats Lon Chaney, Jr., Bela Lugosi and a voice cameo of Vincent Price. It made @ #50 of the Top 100 Funniest Films of All Time.

This is awesome and glad you got it. Also glad you did this one. You should also do the math one.
