I'm not Chinese, but I love the Chinese New Year celebrations. I was lucky to grow up in a part of town with a huge Chinese population. My mom took me to see the lion dances each year. The smokey firecrackers, the vibrant reds and golds as far as I could see, the smell of all the shops making their delicious food, the crowds of people full of joyous energy, and the sound of the drums and cymbals which you could feel throughout your entire body. There are many fun New Year celebrations, but nothing quite matches the excitement and rejuvenating energy of the lion dances. It's the type of celebration that wakes up the spirit completely.

Lion dance is so underrated. It is actually very difficult to even carry the head of the lion as it's very heavy and being the lower part of the lion is tiring as you have to bend your back and carry also the person in front at some parts of the dance. Respect to those who ever did lion dance ✊

Strangely, the dancing lions are actually kinda cute and super endearing. If you can get past all the noise, noise, noise, noise, they're actually super fun to watch! They seem dog-like, which is understandable given they seem to be based off lion-like dogs of ancient Chinese traditions and legends. When this pandemic ends fully (wishful thinking, I know), I'd love to go and see these lions dance up close! But the noise of the drums and cymbals might put me off if I'm not careful.

Yes, prolonged and repetitive exposure to loud sounds, such as those encountered in Chinese Lion Dance training and events, can contribute to early and potentially severe hearing loss. Lion Dance performances typically involve loud drums, cymbals, and gongs, which can produce sound levels well above 85 decibels (dB) - the threshold where prolonged exposure can start to damage hearing. Repeated exposure to noise levels above 100 dB, which is common in many Lion Dance settings, can lead to hearing damage much more quickly. The main factors that influence hearing loss in these settings include: 1. Duration and Intensity of Exposure: The higher the decibel level, the shorter the safe exposure time. For example, sounds at 85 dB may take about 8 hours to cause harm, but sounds at 100 dB can lead to damage within 15 minutes. 2. Lack of Hearing Protection: Many traditional performers may not wear hearing protection due to cultural practices or the nature of the performance. Over time, unprotected exposure can lead to noise-induced hearing loss, which is cumulative and irreversible. 3. Age and Susceptibility: Younger individuals may initially have more resilience to noise, but the cumulative effects of exposure can lead to hearing loss earlier than would occur naturally with age. Once hearing loss occurs, it cannot be reversed. To mitigate this risk, Lion Dance participants can use earplugs designed to reduce decibel levels without compromising the quality of the sound, allowing them to protect their hearing while preserving the cultural experience. Regular hearing tests are also recommended for early detection and prevention of further damage.

😍😍 I love gongs. As a Mizo from North East India. In the olden days, we cannot celebrate a festival without gongs. Gongs are used in festivals, rituals, etc. The sound of the Gongs makes our hearts burst out like a fire.
