My wife is from Korea, so on the Thanksgivings when I worked and she was off, she cooked a Korean Thanksgiving dinner. Today I'm off and she's working, so I'm cooking the traditional American Thanksgiving dinner.

The most important thing is that you tried and had fun and have a story to tell for years to come. It seems most first timers have at least one if not all of the questions or goofs that you guys had. I enjoyed watching you guys try! Dan you have potential for being the official bird man! Not bad for your first time. This was the way I was taught by my mother as a beginner, the Easiest way to cook turkey...1. Defrost frozen bird in fridge for a two days before Thanksgiving to thaw it out or use a fresh bird. 2. Remove neck AND giblet pkg (both ends). 3. Season bird as as desired. 4. Put turkey in A Reynolds Turkey size Oven Cooking Bag (follow directions on box) and place in roasting pan. 5. Bake turkey in preheated oven for allotted time per pound. 6. Test meat with meat thermometer to make sure it's properly done (pop ups can prematurely pop). 7. Remove turkey from bag and set aside, covered to rest at least 20 minutes so it can be carved and juices can return back into to meat. 8. Use turkey drippings/broth from bag to make gravy. By cooking in bag, moisture doesn't evaporate as much in oven and you get more juices. You can always use chicken broth to supplement or boil neck bone in pan of water to get turkey broth if you need more for your gravy or dressing. Your Gravy making skills need some serious help too but that's for another day. You can adapt or change up your way of prep and cooking after you become more comfortable and have some success and are comfortable with it. I still use the bags now because it makes cleanup easy (just toss the bag in the trash) and the meat stays moist. Number one complaint we always had with my Grandmother's bird was it was too dry. She didn't use the bags. Practice makes perfect. Turkey is a lean and healthy meat that can be eaten for more than just holiday meals. It can replace chicken in most recipes and I actually think the dark meat on a turkey is more flavorful than in a chicken. Everybody does their turkey their own way, this is just a few steps I was taught when I cooked my first Thanksgiving. Have fun.

LOL, that plastic thing was not an internal temperature gauge. They were talking about the pop up kind that is on the side of the turkey. Not all of them come with one. I did not see one on yours. You want to take out the plastic leg holder. So, you did good there. LOL, dying over leaving the giblets in.

@Okusername28472
@Okusername28472 7 жыл бұрын
The plastic bit you threw out was NOT the temperature gauge- it was to hold the turkey legs and gizzards together and you were correct in discarding that. The plastic your friend on the phone was referring to, looks like a plastic nail with a red top, THAT is the plastic thermometer they insert and once cooked, the red top pops up to indicate turkey meat is cooked through and through. I cook turkey every Thanksgiving and usually just toss that out as well and go with either a proper meat thermometer or cut the thigh bit to see if the juice runs clear. And use the excess turkey juice (removing the fat) to make homemade gravy. Lol. Some people present the turkey at the dinner table and carve there. Others present it, then take it back into kitchen to carve and then bring out the carved turkey, it really just depends on each family. My family is Asian American however we are culturally very American and I've never had a Thanksgiving without turkey. We typically make everything homemade including the stuffing. Boxed foods in my household is taboo but I can understand it's a stressful holiday and not many people can cook as well as others. Overall you did a swell job for the first time!

Usually, the turkey's body cavity comes with the neckbone, gizzard, heart, and liver. Personally, I find them to be the best parts of the turkey. Being Chinese-born and raised, my mother tends to stuff turkey cavities with Asian rice noodles, shitake mushrooms, and cloud ears. So, the first time she made turkey, she found that there were things around inside, and they looked like, well, neck, gizzard, heart, and liver. The cavity would be stuffed with her own ingredients, while the offal meat would be cooked in another batch separately.

You know what? My hats off to you for even trying to cook a Turkey. It can be extremely tricky to get right, and personally I genuinely appreciate the expatriates among you taking an interest in one of our most important holidays. Oh, and to make a gravy that's not lumpy, start with a roux. Melt butter, and put the flour into the butter until it's basically a thick paste. Take the paste and put that into your juice drippings. Then you'll have a nice smooth gravy with no lumps.

A few tips for you: 1) Make sure the turkey is fully defrosted. It would have helped you get the neck out easier and find the giblet bag. 2) Pull out that plastic piece, it's just to hold the bird together. Sometimes there is a pop up thermometer stuck in the breast, but those are usually terrible. 3) Buy a probe thermometer with a wire. Just stick it in the breast and when it hits 160-162, pull out the bird. It will carry over temp over the next hour and get to a safe 165 out of the oven. That way you don't need to guess or lose heat by opening oven. When the probe alarm goes off, you are done. 4) Don't stuff it. It makes it take way longer, and the bird may be overcooked by the time you get the stuffing up to temp.

To thicken the gravy you don’t just add dry flour. You saute the flour in fat first. Either fat from the turkey or melted butter. You cook it in the fat until it starts to brown. You then deglaze the roasting pan. The brown bits on the pan are what gives gravy it’s flavour. That step is essential. After removing the turkey from the pan you collect the liquid and separate the fat from the juices. You use the juices with chicken stock to dissolve the brown bits on the pan. You have the pan on the stove top on a low heat. You add the turkey juice/ stock mixture to the pan and scrape the brown bits with a spoon or spatula and mix them into the liquid until they are dissolved. Then you take the roux ( the sautéed flour) and add that in and continue to stir over a low or medium heat.

You want good turkey? Cut turkey in half but not the belly skin(the part facing up) mix salt five spice powder ginger garlic and shaoxing wine, rub turkey, separate skin, rub under turkey skin and let sit. Then bake as usual but add water under turkey to steam, then brown the skin after the turkey is cooked. Use the neck and giblets to make a soup usually we make jook, and eat the turkey with housing sauce and other sauces. Trust me it is really yummy like that. Then it tastes really good with Asian food! Since we are a multi cultural family, when we do our holidays this way, we have kimchi, jook, five spice turkey (ohyang chilmyeonjo) banchan and other goodies! Good luck

You guys did a great job for the first time doing Thanksgiving day. I went to school to be a chef and i still can't make a turkey. Which is bad since my family on both parents side are linked to the very first Thanksgiving both with the Native Americans and Pilgrims. One side note is that do NOT eat the veggies that were cooked in the Turkey as that is were more people get sick than eating under-cooked turkey. You did better than i did when i made a turkey as i needed the fire department called as i almost burnt down the kitchen and i went to school to be a chef. Sidenote again, Turkey was never served at the first Thanksgiving but deer and lobster. The one thing that you can take from this is how much fun you all have had doing this. Also PLEASE don't ever try to deep fry a turkey as that is the most dangerousg thing many people have ever done. and if you do decide to deep fry. be careful. looking forward to more videos from you guys.

As I was watching the video I was cringing a bit watching missed steps.(i.e. still frozen turkey and also was wondering if you took the inners bag out until I watched near end of the vid). One way to know is think of when you cook a chicken and the legs are loose and wobbly when done it's the same with a turkey but the turkey is bigger of course. The bag in the turkey is the giblets some people use along with the neck for gravy they'll cook the giblets and the neck meat and blend it into the broth and make gravy.

If you want to make it easy, 1) defrost turkey before cooking, 2) cook using a turkey sized cooking bag, 3) about 1/2 hour or so before the turkey is done according to the cooking bag instructions, remove the turkey from the oven, and cut the corner of the bag and drain the drippings into a saucepan for making gravy. Then split the bag over the breast and fold it down to expose the turkey so the skin will brown. Bob's your uncle!

Don't feel bad about not removing the giblets (liver, gizzard, and heart), because I've seen people leave in the neck, too, and kidneys. (They aren't always easy to find, and they're not in a bag.) Don't use the liver in gravy because it can make it bitter after all that cooking. I think you guys did very well for first-timers, but _always_ have a meat thermometer. If you're going to be cooking Western-style foods (roasts, birds, etc.), a thermometer will simplify your life and ensure no one ever gets sick. You were right to remove that plastic thing, btw. My final thought is to give you all a thumbs up on your first turkey adventure. Although it took a collective IQ of probably over 600, you passed the basic Thanksgiving test.

I feel like preparing a Thanksgiving dinner is one of those really rare American traditions that gets passed down in a family. I remember when I was little watching my grandma and my mother and my step grandma prep the bird. It was a huge deal when I finally got to even touch the bird to put the stuffing inside let alone cook it myself. Don’t feel bad about leaving the giblets inside the bird. It is a very common first time mistake.
