I think a lot of comments show a great degree of immaturity. A lot of people already admitted that there was a very little reporting of North Korea. Chinese show very little interest in the Kermit kingdom as well. When talking about a country, two things must be considered. First: how truthful the media is regarding the said country. Second: are people interested enough to research the source materials. One interviewee said it very well; politics and people are two separate issues. The Chinese government has interests in North Korea, however; Chinese people don't.

Then tell me, which country has a lot of news about North Korea? Which country knows Kim Jeong-eun's visit China beforehand? China is good with North Korea, but many Chinese don't like. So what? It's not decided by your own preferences. North Korea is beneficial for China either politically or geographically, so long as it can stabilize the situation in Northeast Asia. In South Korea even Japan there still many people who don't want to see American soldiers. They are also so-called democratic countries. Can they decide that they will not interact with the US? Your view is not at all true.

I just want you to know I’m not bashing Chinese people by any means - but the way the government is going there will never be a United Asia and it is NOT the United States fault. The physical and real politics of Japan and SK are so opposite of that of China and just do not work. I mean... and China punished south Korea just as they do. It’s like little babies fighting. That’s all our world is nowadays.

@brenna5316

Zelon Wong if you read my comments above then there is your answer. And it’s important to talk about all global issues including my piece of shit government the United States. If we ignore if we are all fucked and bound to die or peril. I hate it when people can’t pick up their hand and google search or baidu search simple things in before making comments. North Korea is very important, but their PEOPLE are more important than China, NK, or the United States governments and opinions. You can never talk too much on a global issue. For instance the water crisis that half of the world suffers from. The very ignorance we recover from NOT talking is what is causing PEOPLE (not governments) to die, be abused and suffer. I say we all get our heads out of our butts and care about what really goes on in a country and not just their political stance or the relations between the countries.

Well my hometown in China is a boarder line to North Korea, there are quite some North Korean people work there, I met and known some of them. They are basically normal folks, no ambitions and just trying to live on. Personally, the only point they pissed me off is some of them work in place like restaurant, and they cannot understand or speak Chinese (but they are usually new comer). Although, people in my hometown don't like North Korea as a political time bomb sit next to our door, they are one of the factor that influence the development of the city, and the North Korean are tricky as fk when we are trying to do business with them. Also, if you want to do interview like this you may want to interview some Northern (especially North Eastern) Chinese, the answer you get will be more extreme/dramatic. Southerner are bit to polite when talk about this kind of issue and they do have some sense of political correctness in comparison, Northerner in this case just don't really give a sht.

Very interesting to hear Chinese provide a wide range of opinions on North Korea. Some comments are actually very sensible and Chinese clearly do not like North Korea having nuclear weapons, see it as a very undeveloped country, and have much more respect for South Korea but unfortunately do not seem to realise how China’s involvement in NK in the 1950’s directly contributed to the state of NK today.

China issued several warnings before the U.S. crossed the 38th parallel, they warned the U.S. how they would rescue North Korea if they still didn't retreat back south of the 38th parallel, but the U.S. didn't care about China's warnings, MacArthur thought the Chinese were still in a primitive society and had no idea how to fight a war, the result was that China went into Korea and fought a 3 year war with the Americans, then the Americans didn't want to fight and offered an armistice.

The saying "there's no eternal friendships or hatred between countries" actually originate from the British Prime H.J.minister Palmerston. The original edition is 'a country does not have permanent friends, only permanent interest'. The reason why so many Chinese know this is probably that the saying is on Chinese high school history textbook to illustrated British traditional off-cycle balance policy. I do think there's no permanent friendships between countries, but there indeed is between people in different countries. For example, even if tension between US and China deteriorates for recent few years, we would still be thankful for the support US gave us during Our patriotic war against japan. And i think ordinary Chinese would share my viewpoint.

I agree NK is an cruel (or even evil) country. I'll be happy if Kim's ruling is thrown away under the below condition: 1 - US or S Korea took all of NK's refugees; 2 - US military out of the peninsula. If no US military there, no buffer zone id needed. I feel bad for NK's people. However I'll not place their lives above the security of my own Chinese ppl. Politic is realistic, so is life.

supykun If you want to reclaim N Korea or make KJU "gone", you must find a way to do it. Things are not done by talks. Currently he's there because a buffer zone is needed for China & Russia against US military force. The reason NK exists is because you, South Korea, an ally of US, can be easily used as a US military base/front line if war breaks out. So the only possible way to unifying Korea is SK quit to be a US puppet so China and Russia wouldn't care even if the peninsula reunifies because no buffer zone needed. I understand normal Korean people don't want to unify with a 3rd world dictatorship. However reality is reality. Talking about liberal nonsense will not change the fact of peninsula separation.

The sad thing is, if only Kim and his military leaders would step aside then: 1 - S Korea would gladly (although not without difficulty) absorb the North Korean people; 2 - The US military would gladly leave the peninsula. The USA does not particularly need military bases close to China or Russia to achieve nuclear deterrence. We certainly have no wish to fight a ground war against these huge and powerful nations on their home turf, so we don't really need an invasion foothold there... no matter how good we are, that would be like a convenient gateway to doom.

I love it how they had so various opinions (even though they may have done some selection to get such a result). Also I find the most anti Kim Jong Un and NK quite funny, he looked (especially the way he spoke) completely high or drunk.

They can’t internalize such ideas. To them that is just another opinion and not necessarily a reality. Some may even say that is western bias. Often times it is just lack of information or reluctance to adopt a popular narrative, such as North Korea being evil.

They tried to improve before . they signed an agreement to stop their nuclear program , than the US broke the deal . so they see its a dead end why not just continue the program? after that they've been provoke with military drill then got sanctioned again and again . but still their nuclear weapon getting better and better . which mean its not a great way to solve the problem . yet ,still keep on doing it . smh

I can't speak for Chinese people, as I'm not Chinese myself, but from speaking with my girlfriend (who is Chinese, born and raised), it seems like they know almost *nothing* about North Korea. The (strictly state controlled) media never or rarely talks about it. The only impression she had was that the country was poor and that Kim Jong-un was a fat and kind of a meme on the Chinese internet. I showed her some videos and told her about some documentaries, like "Under the Sun", "The Propaganda Game" and Vice's documentary on North Korea, as well as showing her videos from the NGO "Liberty in North Korea", which helps North Korean defectors escape the country. She was shocked to hear and see the conditions of the North Korean people and said this was totally new to her. Sorry for the long response (^_^'') Hope it was at least a little informative!

To all the people asking why the chinese don't know how bad Kim is, let me tell you we know so much to the point that those are common sense and not interesting to be discussed anymore. I was born and raised in Liaoning province which borders NK by yalu river. Just as an example from young I knew (heard) the NK defecters would be brought to the bridge and NK solders would punch a big nail through their palm and drag them back. We call him Kim the 3rd fatty for a reason. Please don't be so naive that thinking you are the informed one. So now here comes the subjective opinion. We know how bad Iraq, Syria became without a leader (see here I don't need to say how thoses leaders are right? Those are common sense). We also are more concerned about China in case NK collapse. I personally am also quite impressed with how the fatty as a 30 years old took control of his country and stayed in power. Too much to type in a comment. You got the idea

this is refreshing. i'm chinese living in west and i do absolutely not agree on everything they say but if there's something i do hate it's when westerners and white people are discussing what THEY THINK chinese think and feel, judging them from an american/western perspective. ugh god i hate it so much. i obviously think kim jong un is shit and i do fkn wish for china to stop sending north korean refugees BACK TO NORTH KOREA???? at least send them to south korea like the rest of asia does... anyways, i also understand that you can't have the same expectations of china as you have on japan or korea (or america) and that's something many people have, using this comparison as an argument to trash china and chinese. china is a big ass country, its very rich and developed in some areas but it's also extremely and underdeveloped in other areas. i don't like the american system at all but china is a dictatorship with censor and limited access to information. they don't have a functioning system and i'm not saying this as either western or chinese. i'm saying this as both. globalization has made me realize things i didn't know before: all asians and ALL people of color should take care of each other bc to white people we aren't worth shit anyways. asians living in asia are often very ignorant towards each other and refugees and other people from other parts of the world (that is not west) which may be understandable but it's acceptable nor an excuse. i hope that the mainland chinese will continue to engage themselves politically and i wish for the world and to be more understanding rather than hateful and racist since it only will make it look like what the government says about foreigners is true. i also wish for people to learn how to separate between the PEOPLE and the government because i get shit from japanese, koreans, taiwanese, hongkongese, filipinos, americans, etc. etc. everyday just because i'm chinese. stop turning your backs on the people and the same goes for y'all who's hatred towards kim jong un has consumed you, led you to ignore and punish the north korean people instead. the people deserve love and respect and you need to realize we all grew up with different possibilities and therefore you can't have the same expectations of us all but have to be understanding and patient.

in China electing officials is to compare their achievements with each other’s ,such as economic growth, environmental protection, investment promotion, poll satisfaction, the people's livelihood, and so on. which means they elect the persons who are truly capable of taking responsibility. While in the West ,with making a speech and boasting themselves, whoever gets more votes can be an official,Western presidents would not be qualified to be high-ranking officials in China at all

I'm not making excuse for North Korea, but for those saying Chinese people have no compassion to NK people, here is my opinion. I have really good NK friend during university. Obviously he is in upper class, but meanwhile he is very proud of to be NK citizen. You can feel that easily without asking the question. Interestingly, he also admits a lot of things are not good in NK, but he is confident in the future. One question is how ordinary NK people feelings really are. People who escaped NK can give a very bad image. However, just like Dalai Lama gives a very bad picture of Tibet ruled by PRC, but at least by talking with my ethnical Tibetan friend, I know they love PRC. Hence, I may feel the escaped NK people and my NK friend are just two end members, and neither can reflect the whole picture. As a Chinese person, especially not know what is exactly happening in NK, I feel irresponsible to just say their people are living in hell. Especially, from the experience of old day china, what Kim was doing is to gain the capability to exist, internationally and domestically, and is a must for him. And it can be seen he is smart enough and even can play the balance between US and China. His travelling marks the end of intensity in NK, and I feel his next step will be trying to get as much money as possible in exchange of "abandoning" nuclear weapon and developing economy. Anyway, I want ordinary NK people to live a better life, but I also don't know if the ordinary bad impression on NK is real, and whether they are actually suffering. However, I know people will suffer if getting into a war, or starving because of lack of food assistance, so I think keep the situation is the best choice for now especially after his China visit. Hope things will turn better.

I think the comments to these videos miss the lessons that can be learned from the videos. The videos show that people are often misunderstanding how other people live or behave. Overall I think stereotypes can be very harmful. If possible it is good to try to have an open mind about a country and its people. Otherwise we are divided and this is bad for humanity.
