This was one of the best episodes Matt. Having more fun with it is much better than a completely dry retelling of history. Gary teasing Tim recently and the jokes between Jim and yourself make the show better.

Listened to the podcast on my flight from Belfast to London this evening. Was in Gettysburg 5 years ago and remember going to the Diorama and being terrified by the Dan Sickles waxwork staring down at me from the ceiling - wonder if it's still there;-)
@anthonysalem18323 жыл бұрын
It's still there! Lol! I just visited the diorama for the first time (after numerous Gettysburg trips) and I had a similar reaction to Old Dan. You catch him out of the corner of your eye, and it's like "wtf?!", before you realize what you're actually looking at. 😅

@@addressinggettysburg - Sickles reminds me of that 'petulant uncle' on a family camping trip that is not happy with his assigned camping spot...and ruins it for everybody else. I often wonder if Longstreets attack would have been successful if Sickles had stayed in his assigned position...his move forced not just Meade and Hancock to alter their defense plan, it also forced Longstreet to alter his attack plan.

Sickles moving forward then being forced back on the attack created a false sense of weakness in the center of the union line. Hence his decision on the 3rd day, which led to union victory.

I’ve never heard anyone talk about what would’ve happened had Longstreet been in position a little earlier in the day and launched his attack while Sickles was in the process of moving forward. The war may have ended July 2nd.
@addressinggettysburg9 ай бұрын
My feeling is that he might have succeeded in rolling up the flank. For a while. But all those Union reinforcements that ended up saving the day in reality, are still there in this fantasy scenario. So I think they still would have lost the battle, still would have lost the war; the only thing that would be different would be the battle lines would be in different places on the maps we use today. Also, we’ve talked about this on several shows. Not as a show topic but as an aside. I couldn’t tell you which one, but if you keep exploring our channel you should find them. Thanks for listening!
