I can’t wait to get time to listen to this episode! You hipped me to the Top 10 book with the Top 10 Infantry action episode…a great conversation and listen! I found a copy of the book on Amazon for cheap, and brought it on my last visit in March. I checked out most of the cannons on the list on my last day. I also ran into Garry Adelman on that trip..,he was very polite and kind! Peace

thanks for bringing on ralph Matt. A great presentation. That exploded cannon you spoke of along the road by the Bryan farm, I was told years ago, the cannon was used in the 1963 reenactment and was overpacked with powder. Of course it hadn't been fired since the civil war and the underbelly was weak. when they fired the cannon it exploded. The park service said , never again. My friend a fellow reenactor told me this in 1966,. Resource the newspapers about the reenactment in July 1963 and see if it is mentioned. Once again my compliments a great informative show.

The Roebling's family later claim to fame involved Donald Roebling, the grandson of Washington Roebling. In the 1930's Donald invented a tracked vehicle designed for use in swampy areas, mainly rescue and supply missions. The US Navy and Marine Corps took note and adopted the vehicle which came to be known as the LVT (Landing Vehicle Tracked). LVTs were one of the mainstays of numerous amphibious assaults in the Pacific from Guadalcanal to Okinawa and also saw action in Europe, particularly in the Rhine River crossings in the Spring of 1945.

Finally listened to the broadcast twice and really enjoyed it. I studied the Civil war since i was a young teenager - among otheer periods,, etc and finally decided to focus on the artillery. Glad youve been having broadcasts focusing on this aspect of the battle. Ive been wanting to become a patron buut have been focusing obn retirement soon and need to figure out.expenditures. oh yeah, always enjoy Ralph Siegel's contributions!!!

Archaeologists will usually continue digging to sterile subsoil, i forget to what depth possibly 15 cm. I worked with the SUNY Buffalo archaeological survey while persuing my Bachelor's in anthropology but it has beeen many years.

An Ieper museum in Flanders has a photo of a Poilu (as I recall) with no lower jaw. A recent wound. The guy's eyes are unforgettable: the very depths of misery.

Maybe the 3-inch shell was mixed in error with the 2.9 ammo and not dropped but discarded and buried as to not be hit and explode.

Interesting about the Whitworth guns being loaded from the muzzle rather the breach. That and still no development of the rounds, to which I am surprised about. Breach loading artillery had been around for over a hundred years or more.

Who was Colonel Brockenbrough and was he as bad a Confederate leader as I've heard?

Don’t know much about him. However, I’ll keep this in the back of my mind and will bring it up on a show when apropos

Brockenbrough is not generally well regarded by military historians in large part for his performance at Gettysburg. During the first day they essentially, and we don't know why, drug their feet and never really got into action against Stone or the Iron Brigade. They encountered difficult terrain but this shouldn't alone account for their failure to support Pettigrew in what was a viscious fight. Brockenbrough was criticized for this... and the entire brigade was shamed and not for the first time. I believe Brockenbroughs brother was killed on July 1st. On the third day, Brockenbrough failed once again to support the Confederate attacks. The brigade essentially split into two and again failed to really advance beyond the Bliss farm... and most didn't get there. We aren't really sure what happened there either, some think Brockenbrough wasn't even in command, some think he split command... but whatever happened, they didn't do much. As you might imagine failure to support the Confederate efforts on the 1st AND during Picketts charge isn't going to endear you to military history. He wasn't the best, and his performance at Gettysburg at crucial times was terrible. But is anything truly as bad or as good as you've heard? I suspect the truth is in the middle. I know he didn't last lol
