I was one of those people who thought your videographer was snickering because, well, you are often funny. It didn't bother me, tho , and I figured it out. Reminded me of David Letterman, early in his career, as a weatherman on a local Indianapolis TV station. He was ALWAYS hilarious, and you could see the camera shaking because the crew was cracking up. One time he mentioned 'watermelon sized hail' and the laughter and shaking was crazy. I looked at my mom and said, "Is he gonna get in trouble?"

I've never noticed any issue with Dr. Lori's speaking and I'm a binge watcher. My husband has Turret's Syndrome and clicks his teeth when under stressful situations, and my Dad was a severe stutterer in college. We regularly answer questions from children who want to know why DH clicks his teeth, or sometimes kids (and some rude adults) will copy him. Kids don't know better and genuinely want to know why he does it, but the adults who mock/copy him are the worst. We love Dr. Lori and won't ever change anything about her! She's perfect in our eyes!

Greetings from Pensacola, Florida Dr Lori . .......... and What the heck??? What a weird thing for someone to write! Starts out calling you a gem and then throws that remark in there that really SUX. It’s appalling and rude to me as your fan for such an asinine comment to be sent to you like that and who in the heck does he or she think they are? Excuse me but I think whoever said that was owes you an apology. As far as you are concerned Dr Lori - I simply love ❤️ 💕 every single thing about you and I mean every single thing!!! I also enjoy listening to and watching your channel that I ran across not to long ago. I have learned so much from you and know that every time I watch your show that I will continue learning something new. I only wish that I had found you a long time ago and I look forward to watching all of your videos. I’ve saved some for future references as well! Back to the ignorant remark that was written- I’m still appalled that a person has the nerve to ever say anything negative no matter how big or small to anyone. Like really?? Who on this earth is perfect anyway??? I can sure bet the person who wrote that letter isn’t perfect as well, but then again- probably thinks they are. Pathetic!!!! Wish I was more like you Dr Lori because you have more patience with people saying ignorant things, than I do. All I can say is I’m sorry that anyone could ever write anything negative to you when you deserve nothing but the utmost respect after all of the hard work you do to put on these videos for people like us to watch and learn from.

My husband is a pastor and toward the end of seminary, while in preaching class, his professor pointed out that my husband has a tendency to close his eyes at points during his sermons. It was not a conscious trait and he has been unable to break it. I appreciate that our church members have never made a big deal out of it. God bless those of you who put yourselves out there and do public speaking! It is not easy to be vulnerable in front of crowds. I learn a lot from your videos and I trust folks are gaining from my husband's preaching as well despite the idiosyncrasies which we ALL have!

Dr Lori, I just found you, and I’m so glad I did! My sister died 5 years ago and I have about 15 boxes of her Precious Moments in there boxes. Thank you for your information, I’m so glad I found your channel. I heard you mention a website. However, I don’t see a link to it, or the name of it. Did I overlook it? I wish I knew about you 20 years ago when I had an oval frame restored. The man EVERYONE in my area told me to take it to, completely destroyed it! It’s over 120 years old, and I can’t stand to look at it. I cry every time I even think about it. It was wood when I took it to him, and is now painted gold!! Is there a way to fix what he destroyed? Thank you.

Hi Dr Lori! As usual, I learn amazing things every time I watch your videos! As a long time educator of young children, I was very impressed with your suggestion for figuring out signatures on paintings. You handled that with such grace. What a better world we could have if we were less sensational and more kind because there's nothing wrong with curiosity, in fact I really feel a mixed bag of insecurity and appreciation when someone asks about things that most judge harshly. It was really a blessing to see that and actually I find your cheeky banter familiar, Italian, Chicago lol. I have learned the hard way that some are just to tender to not be offended by good raw honesty mixed into polite society, I think it's genius, even if unintended. Loosens people up and makes finery truly accessible to a time when funky junk is so trendy that it has really blurred the lines of what is valuable and allowed some fantastic treasures to surface in unsuspecting hands. I resonate with you on many levels that would take along winding road to share so I'll just say that I really appreciate so deeply how accessible you have made what I believe could be a daunting subject area. I am kicking myself for dropping the art history class in Florence because it seemed over my head. Im a licensed clinical social worker now who is transforming my craft and the way I help people and it's brought me to the one place I was told I didn't belong (long story) and that is art in all forms. You and your various forms of content have helped me feel more secure, confident and competent in my ability to at least recognize quality, form and meaning in the "junk" I cull through. I find myself being able to discern between quality at the very least, for example, I might not know the significance of the artistry but im looking for frame composition, materials, colors, little dots etc. And being able to say, this was well made or care was taken and that in and of itself says that it may be worth considering if nothing else but because Im pleased by it and would be honored to be a part of the piece's story. I actually think the new miracle cure in psychotherapy is a return to all things artistic and to encourage community through creativity to combat the REAL PANDEMIC: ISOLATION AND STAGNATION. If you would ever be interested in a collaborative endeavor I think I would just faint from excitement. I see an opportunity to solve things like poverty, homelessness and maybe even crime lol by getting people involved in arts and second hand goods. We have too many valuable beautiful things gorging our landfills that could be preserved used or even repurposed. Your shows have helped me reassess how I was approaching my entrepreneurial experiments. At first I was all over the place, hoarding junk, accidentally destroying actual treasures, making errors in identification etc. Today I feel much more educated about what is in front of me and what may be worth the investment of time and energy or often making my work more efficient by looking for very specific green flags, as I call them, when deciding if something might be worth a deeper sweep. I also am able to cut the bs of getting in over my head in categories that really require good reliable experts. I think there should be some very grateful people out there who don't even know your passion for teaching us your knowledge is separating the "men from the boys" as the saying goes. We can all be cheap about these things especially when we have self esteem issues, but having figured this out myself, I see how important it is to be willing to invest in authentic expertise when we care about something. It's a new world marketing wise and while many people give good free content, I want you to really appreciate yourself because you are giving college level and beyond solid education in an accessible easy to process format to anyone who can watch you tube without asking to be directly compensated. I deliberately did not use the word FREE because while I am not paying for it, I Know a few things. I know that there is a great cost for you and your team to generate, produce and present everything. I also know that the quantity of materials you share costs a gigantic amount of your personal time to engage in and I wonder how you manage it all. I also know that by helping lay people become educated it makes art in so many forms a new old place people are creating community around. I think you are a hero and don't even know it. My gratitude for you is immense during what's been a professionally and personally chaotic period in my life that I'm feeling confident will become the foundation for a really good future. But I've been unsure of how to get myself out there and watching your videos actually gets me excited about a pull I've been feeling towards something I've never done which is being criticized from all sides but I feel compelled just the same. Thank you for being one of my 5. (They say the 5 people you spend most time with indicate where you are/ are going). Thanks to you tube, I've upgraded my roundtable by quite a margin. ❤🤗🤗🤗😁😁 You Rock!

SPEECH: Why is this person even asking about this? I would NEVER ask or point out something like that. I personally think it’s rude and uncalled for. Adults should know better. Perhaps this person has OCD and can’t get their mind to rest until they know the answer. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I have never noticed this before and we have even spoken live on FaceTime 😬 Your answer was very graceful 💕 I wouldn’t have answered the question but rather just reply “Oh, Bless Your Heart”. As a Southern woman, I'd like to offer these points: 1. Down here we don't have issues or habits that might be unorthodox; we have eccentricities. 2. One should never be so poorly raised as to point out an eccentricity. 3. When in doubt, listen to the indomitable Julia Sugarbaker: "I'm saying this is the South, and we're proud of our crazy people. We don't hide them up in the attic. We bring 'em right down to the living room and show 'em off. See, Phyllis, no one in the South ever asks if you have crazy people in your family. They just ask what side they're on."

Greetings from Pensacola Florida the sunshine State and home of the Blue Angels! We’re just starting to get over going thru Hurricane Sally - a Cat. 2 with 110 mph winds. Finally getting back to watching your videos after all the commotion around here. I thoroughly love your videos and I promise to pass you on to family and friends. I always learn something new - you are amazing!!! I’m hoping to get out a few porcelain pieces I have had for about 50 years but have them wrapped and sealed up in a box because I didn’t want them to get damaged. One is a Giuseppe Cappe figuring of a Man and a basket. I love this little man sitting on a rock with a basket of grapes .You can see his muscles on his legs and also tendons in his hands and the folds on the shirt makes it so realistic. . The details are just phenomenal. He looks like he can just jump right down off the rock and become alive. Anyway- I did see him going for $300 on eBay but thought he’d be worth more by now because I believe I paid $250 for him way back almost 50 years ago. I have found very little info about the artist. I just know it’s dated back around 1958 I think. I’d have to get him out and look. Do you know if the artist is still alive? And does his work increase in value if he dies? I’ve always wondered. I know he is from Italy and I believe that’s where he was doing his sculpting.

Thanks for sharing the videos. Have you seen my videos where I talk about not using eBay as a price guide and why? Concerning your pieces, I can help, but need to see them. You can send me photos if you like. And your questions about the artist being alive is a great question for a future Ask Dr. Lori video!

Well, one time were were at the Auction. My husband nodded & bought a Large Rug. After the Auction, a man approached him & offered him $100-. He paid $25- for it. In 1975 100- was a lot of money. So husband sold it. There were a lot of dealer's at the auction. I'll bet he's was one of them. Looking back, bet that rug was antique, or Persian, very expensive. Shucks!!

Dr. Lori, that question about that sound you make was exactly what I thought! Genuinely I thought after a while it was the camera man because it's always in the public videos but don't worry about it! Everyone has some sort of unique trait or some physical response we do thats subconscious (I have many!) and honestly if anyone is bothered, too bad for them! They'll just end up selling a Picasso for $50 since they can't follow your advice.

@3:30 that’s a pet peeve of mine! Why do artists spend hours, days, weeks painting but don’t bother to sign their pieces.. or just scribble some initials or signature? Please artist- Date n Sign and Print your name.. it could be on the back.
@DrLoriV
@DrLoriV 3 жыл бұрын
Artists are doing work just like you do your work. So, they aren't always thinking of signing everything that they do for various reasons. Also, certain times in history it was looked down upon for artists to sign their works so many paintings are not signed for this reason. Many resellers will forge signatures on paintings because some people just have to have a signature :) Look for quality, not signatures. Experts don't rely on signatures. I write more about this topic on my website if you are interested. Thanks for the comment.

Wow Dr. Lori I was not aware you have a speech impediment! I thought that because we live in the U.S.A. and there are more then two thousand separate types of English spoken in different locales. For instance potatoes, tomato and envelopes there are more then three separate ways to pronounce the words. Colloquialisms in California, WashingtonChicago, Boston and Texas to names few very noticeable accents I didn’t notice that you have one at all! You have a lovely voice.

Hi Dr Lori, I definitely hear people most commonly refer to metal as having a patina, especially with jewellery that has had a patina applied to oxidise is and change its colour. However, I've also heard leather workers and shoe makers talk about leather patina, and occasionally hear old staining on wood referred to as a patina, as you mentioned, as well as archaeologists talking about patina on stone artefacts. Is this just a different industry/sector thing, or is it really incorrect? What are some more accurate ways to describe an aged wood/leather finish?
@DrLoriV
@DrLoriV 3 жыл бұрын
You are talking about different materials and different terminology is used for different materials. When it comes to wood, patina is not the term used. The oily build up on wood is the oily build up on wood. Patina when discussing metal sculpture is an application of pigment typically done during the foundry process.

i was at auction they were tring to sell a colonial piece furnature being in the PNW i know there isnt alot of these pieces out here belonging to generations of family so im looking it over i even crawled underneath i tell them its a reproduction they asked why will there were nails with a rounded head as nails were scarce in colonial times and if they had iron they were made by black smiths which had square head also i saw no peg fitting which was common due to resources of the time. so they hired a professional from back east . they looked at it and said the same thing . I grew up near oston and had opportunities to see actual colonial pieces
